Chapter 7: What Noah Remembered
Marcus sat on the floor of his office.
The video continued playing.
Daniel’s face filled the screen.
Alive.
Confident.
Terrifyingly calm.
Noah stood in the doorway holding Buddy's leash.
“Dad?””
Marcus looked up.
He didn't know what to say.
Rachel stopped the video.
“What does Noah remember?””
Vanessa was no longer pretending.
She sat across the room with her hands folded.
“He saw something.””
Marcus stared at her.
“What?””
Vanessa's eyes moved toward Noah.
“A fire.””
Noah frowned.
“I remember rain.””
Marcus went still.
“What rain?””
Noah pressed his fingers against his forehead.
“Mommy was crying.””
Vanessa whispered, “Noah…”
The boy continued.
“There was a man.””
“Who?””
“I don't know.””
Marcus knelt.
“Look at me.””
Noah did.
“Was it Daniel?””
Noah nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“What happened?””
Noah’s voice was tiny.
“Uncle Daniel was yelling.””
“About what?””
“Money.””
Marcus looked at Rachel.
She opened the financial records.
There were payments from Marcus’s father’s company to Daniel.
Then missing funds.
Then insurance documents.
Then one final transfer.
To Vanessa.
Marcus stood.
“My mother knew.””
Rachel nodded.
“She knew about the fraud.””
“And Noah saw it?””
“Yes.””
Vanessa spoke softly.
“He was three.””
Marcus looked at her.
“He was a toddler.””
“He remembered enough.””
“So you manipulated him.””
“I tried to make him forget.””
Marcus's voice became ice.
“How?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Your father had a doctor.””
Rachel stiffened.
“What doctor?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Tell me.””
“Dr. Collins.””
Rachel shook her head.
“That name appears in the payments.””
Marcus pulled up the records.
There it was.
Repeated transfers.
Medical consultations.
Private prescriptions.
A pattern.
Noah had not been forgetful.
Someone had been trying to make him forget.
Buddy suddenly barked.
The dog ran to the door.
Someone was outside.
Marcus froze.
A knock.
Then a voice.
“It's me.””
Marcus knew that voice.
His blood went cold.
Daniel.
Vanessa began to cry.
Marcus opened the door.
A man stood in the hallway.
Older.
Thinner.
A scar across his jaw.
Alive.
Daniel looked past Marcus.
His eyes landed on Noah.
He whispered, “You grew up.””
Noah stared at him.
Then his face changed.
A memory surfaced.
He pointed.
“You were there.””
Daniel stopped.
Noah's voice shook.
“You pushed Mommy.””
Marcus turned toward Daniel.
Rachel stepped backward.
Daniel raised both hands.
“Marcus, listen.””
“You lied to me.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“You stole from me.””
“I was trying to survive.””
“You used my son.””
Daniel's expression collapsed.
“No.””
Noah moved behind Marcus.
“You were there when the fire started.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Tell me the truth.””
Daniel opened them again.
“The fire wasn't an accident.””
Nobody moved.
“Who started it?””
Daniel looked toward Vanessa.
She whispered, “Don't.””
Daniel swallowed.
“Your father ordered it.””
Marcus stared.
“My father was dead.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Not then.””
Marcus felt the world tilt.
Rachel quietly picked up the phone.
“There's one more file.””
She pressed play.
A man's voice came through the speaker.
Older.
Cold.
Familiar.
Marcus knew it instantly.
His father.
