Chapter 8: My Wife's Secret Investigation

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

Camila had requested access to my company's archived financial records.

The same records that could prove Alejandro's innocence.

The same records that someone had deleted only a week earlier.

And she had done it while carrying my child, attending medical appointments alone, and trying to convince me that our marriage was worth saving.

I looked at Gabriel.

“When did she request access?””

“Six weeks ago.””

“Why didn't anyone tell me?””

“Her request went through the legal department because she was listed as a beneficiary of several family assets. The company was required to preserve the records while the request was reviewed.””

I took the file from him.

“Who approved it?””

“Your former legal director.””

“Who is that now?””

“Daniel Whitmore. He took over after Ricardo left.””

“Call him.””

Gabriel nodded and stepped away.

I remained beside the neonatal unit, staring at the document.

Camila had not merely suspected that something was wrong.

She had been investigating.

Quietly.

Carefully.

Without telling me.

I thought about the way she had watched me during dinner in recent months. The questions she had asked about the construction company. The times she had suggested that I review old contracts before signing new ones.

I had dismissed her concerns as anxiety.

Once, when she asked whether I had ever discovered what really happened to Alejandro, I had laughed.

“Why are you still thinking about that? He betrayed me. It's over.””

She had looked at me for a long moment.

Then she had said, “Sometimes, Mateo, the things we refuse to examine are the things that control us most.””

I had accused her of being dramatic.

Now I wondered how much she had already discovered.

Gabriel returned with his phone.

“Daniel is on the line.””

I took it.

“Daniel, this is Mateo Villarreal. I need every document Camila requested six weeks ago.””

There was a pause.

“Mr. Villarreal, I can arrange that, but the files are part of a protected review.””

“I'm her husband.””

“And Mrs. Villarreal is a legal beneficiary with independent rights. I cannot discuss the details of her request without confirming the applicable authorization.””

I gripped the phone.

“My wife is in intensive care.””

“I understand.””

“Then stop hiding behind procedure and tell me what she was investigating.””

Daniel's voice remained calm.

“I can't do that over the phone. However, I can meet you at the hospital with the records.””

“When?””

“Within an hour.””

I ended the call.

Gabriel looked at me.

“What do you think she found?””

I looked through the glass at my son's incubator.

“Something she didn't trust me to hear.””

Daniel arrived at 3:12 a.m.

He was a thin man in his early fifties who had worked for my family for almost a decade. He carried a locked briefcase and looked as if he had been awake for days.

He greeted me with a brief nod.

“I'm sorry about your wife.””

“Thank you. Show me the records.””

Daniel placed the briefcase on a table.

“I need to explain something first. Mrs. Villarreal did not ask for access to your entire financial archive.

She requested specific records connected to the failed residential development and the complaint against Mr. Serrano.””

“Why?””

“She believed the complaint might have been based on altered evidence.””

I looked at him.

“Did she tell you that?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because she asked me to keep the review confidential until she had verified the facts.””

I felt anger rise, then collapse under the weight of the circumstances.

Camila had been trying to protect me from a truth I had spent five years refusing to face.

“Open the briefcase,” I said.

Daniel unlocked it and removed several folders.

“The first discrepancy concerns the original payment to the contractor. The second concerns the internal transfers. The third concerns the evidence submitted against Mr. Serrano.””

He placed a spreadsheet in front of me.

“Your company paid the contractor seven million pesos more than the approved amount. The excess payment was then recorded as a loss. However, the banking records indicate that part of the money returned to an account controlled by a related company.””

“Ricardo's company?””

“Possibly. We're still tracing the final recipient.””

He opened another folder.

“This is the original audit report. It differs from the report presented to the board.””

I scanned the pages.

The original report stated that the missing funds could not be attributed to Alejandro. It recommended further investigation into the contractor and the finance department.

The version I had received claimed that Alejandro had diverted the funds.

I stared at the signature on the second document.

My signature.

“Who altered this?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“The electronic audit trail indicates that the report was modified using an administrator account assigned to Ricardo Salcedo.””

“Then why does it have my approval?””

“Because the final version was submitted through your account.””

I felt sick.

“Could someone have used my credentials?””

“Yes. But we cannot determine that without examining the authentication records.””

I turned to the final folder.

Inside was a printed email from Camila to Daniel.

I don't want to destroy my husband's company. I want to know whether the man he accused was innocent. If the records prove that Mateo made an honest mistake, we need to correct it. If someone deliberately manipulated him, we need to find out who.

I read the message twice.

She had not been looking for a way to punish me.

She had been looking for a way to save me from a lie.

I sat back.

“Did she find anything else?””

Daniel hesitated.

“She asked us to review a separate series of payments made after Mr. Serrano left the company. Several of those payments were approved using your authorization.””

“How many?””

“Eleven.””

“Total?””

“Approximately twelve million pesos.””

I stared at him.

“Where did the money go?””

“We haven't completed the analysis. However, the payments were made to companies that shared a registered address with one of Ricardo's businesses.””

The room seemed to narrow around me.

Twelve million pesos.

A sum large enough to destroy the credibility of any company.

And I had spent years telling people that Alejandro had stolen from us.

“What did Camila intend to do with this information?””

Daniel removed one final document.

“She scheduled a meeting with an independent forensic accountant for next Monday. She also asked us to prepare a formal request to reopen the investigation into Mr. Serrano.””

I looked at the date.

Monday.

Three days from now.

She had been planning to tell me.

Perhaps she had intended to place the evidence on the table and finally make me confront the past.

Then she had fallen down the stairs.

And I had ignored her calls.

I pressed my fingers against my eyes.

“Did she mention me?””

Daniel nodded.

“She said she hoped that if the evidence was conclusive, you would have the courage to admit what happened.””

I laughed bitterly.

“The courage.””

Daniel said nothing.

I looked at the documents again.

“Send everything to an independent investigator. Preserve the original files, the emails, the server logs, and the bank records. I want a formal review, not an internal summary.””

Daniel nodded.

“And the public statement?””

I looked up.

“What public statement?””

“If the investigation confirms that Mr. Serrano was wrongly accused, your company will need to correct the record.””

I imagined the headlines.

Mateo Villarreal Admits Former Best Friend Was Wrongfully Accused.

Business Empire Faces Questions Over Five-Year-Old Fraud Allegations.

My investors would demand answers. The board would question my judgment. The reputation I had spent years polishing would crack.

For the first time, I realized that doing the right thing might cost me everything I had built my identity around.

Then I remembered Camila's hand slipping from her phone.

I remembered her voice.

I don't want to die alone.

I looked at Daniel.

“Prepare the statement.””

He seemed surprised.

“Are you certain?””

“No.””

I gathered the documents.

“But I'm done making decisions based on what protects my reputation.””

Daniel closed the briefcase.

“Then I'll begin immediately.””

After he left, I stood alone beside the window.

The city was beginning to lighten at the edges. Delivery trucks moved along the streets, and a few early commuters passed beneath the hospital lights.

I had spent five years defending a lie because admitting the truth would have required me to question myself.

Camila had been willing to do what I refused to do.

And now she lay unconscious because I had failed to listen to her.

A nurse approached.

“Mr. Villarreal?””

I turned.

“Is Camila awake?””

“Not yet. But her condition is stable enough that the doctor has approved a brief visit.””

I followed her to the recovery room.

Camila lay with her eyes closed, her breathing shallow but steady. The monitors beside her showed a rhythm that seemed impossibly fragile.

I pulled a chair beside the bed.

“I found the records,” I whispered.

She didn't respond.

“I know you were investigating what happened to Alejandro. I know you were trying to prove that I might have been wrong.””

I took her hand carefully.

“I don't know whether you can hear me. But I want you to know that I'm going to reopen the investigation. If I accused an innocent man, I'm going to correct it publicly.””

Her fingers remained still.

“I should have listened to you months ago. I should have gone to the appointments. I should have taken your fear seriously.””

I swallowed.

“I can't ask you to forgive me. I don't deserve that yet.””

For a long time, I sat beside her without speaking.

Then I noticed a small movement near her pillow.

A folded piece of paper.

It had been tucked beneath the edge of the blanket.

I carefully removed it.

Camila's handwriting covered the front.

For Mateo, if he ever decides to listen.

My hands began to shake.

I opened it.

If you're reading this, it means I found the evidence I was looking for—or I finally ran out of time.

I stopped.

The room blurred.

I forced myself to continue.

I don't know what happened five years ago. I don't know whether Ricardo manipulated you or whether you knew more than you admitted. But I know the man I married would never deliberately destroy someone who had stood beside him like a brother.

A tear slipped down my cheek.

I need you to find out the truth, even if it hurts. Not for Alejandro. Not for the company. For yourself.

I pressed the paper against my chest.

Then I read the final paragraph.

And Mateo, if you ever find yourself choosing between looking successful and doing what is right, remember that our son will learn what love means by watching you.

I bowed my head over her hand.

For the first time, I didn't ask her to forgive me.

I asked myself whether I could become the man she had believed I was.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

Alejandro stood in the doorway.

“Can I come in?””

I wiped my face.

“Yes.””

He entered quietly and looked at the letter in my hand.

“Did she write that?””

I nodded.

He pulled up a chair on the other side of the bed.

For several minutes, we sat in silence.

Then I turned toward him.

“I'm going to clear your name.””

Alejandro looked at me.

“Don't make promises you haven't earned the right to make.””

“I've already ordered an independent investigation. Daniel found evidence that the audit report was altered. There were payments to companies connected to Ricardo.””

Alejandro's face grew serious.

“Do you have the original records?””

“Yes.””

“Then preserve them. Don't let anyone in your company touch them without an independent witness.””

“I will.””

He studied me.

“Why now?””

I looked at Camila.

“Because she believed you were innocent when I didn't. Because she spent five years trying to protect me from the consequences of a lie. And because I can't keep asking the people I love to pay for my mistakes.””

Alejandro looked away.

For the first time, I saw something other than anger in his expression.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But perhaps the faintest possibility that I might finally understand what I had done.

Then his phone rang.

He answered, listened for several seconds, and stood.

“Where did you get that information?”” he asked.

A pause.

“Send me the documents.””

He ended the call and looked at me.

“Who was that?”” I asked.

“A former accountant from the construction company.””

“What did he want?””

Alejandro's face had gone pale.

“He says Ricardo didn't act alone.””

I stared at him.

“Who else was involved?””

Alejandro looked toward the door, as if he expected someone to be listening.

Then he said a name that made my blood run cold.

“My father.””

I froze.

“My father has been dead for eight years.””

“I know.””

“Then what are you talking about?””

Alejandro took a breath.

“Your father was the person who approved the original contractor. He was also the person who signed the first transfer that eventually led to the missing funds.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn't prove anything.””

“No. But the accountant says your father discovered what Ricardo was doing before he died.””

I felt the floor shift beneath me.

“Why didn't he tell me?””

Alejandro looked at the sleeping woman between us.

“Because the last document he signed may have implicated someone in your family.””

I stared at him.

“Who?””

Alejandro lowered his voice.

“Your mother.””

Before I could respond, a nurse rushed into the room.

“I'm sorry, but Mrs. Villarreal is waking up.””

Camila's eyelids fluttered.

Her fingers tightened around mine.

I leaned toward her.

“Camila? Can you hear me?””

She opened her eyes.

For one brief moment, she looked confused.

Then she saw Alejandro.

“Did you find it?”” she whispered.

Alejandro leaned closer.

“Find what?””

Camila's gaze shifted toward me.

“The letter from Mateo's father.””

My breath stopped.

“What letter?””

She tried to sit up, but the nurse gently guided her back against the pillow.

“Camila, you need to rest.””

She shook her head weakly.

“Mateo, listen to me.””

I took her hand.

“I'm listening.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Your father left something behind. I found it in the old family archives.””

“What did you find?””

She looked toward Alejandro.

Then back at me.

“Proof that your father knew the truth about the money.””

My heart pounded.

“What truth?””

Camila's lips trembled.

“The money wasn't stolen by Alejandro. It was used to protect someone.””

“Who?””

She closed her eyes for a moment, gathering strength.

May you like

Then she whispered the words that changed everything.

“Your father was protecting your mother.””
