Chapter 14 - THE ENEMY STRIKES

The next forty‑eight hours passed in a blur of preparation.

Sarah filed the DNA results and Elena’s letter with the court. She alerted law enforcement to Julian Vane’s presence in the area. She placed a formal request for police protection for Noah and me.

But the wheels of justice turn slowly. And Julian moved fast.

It happened on a Tuesday morning. I had driven to the office for an hour—just long enough to sign some documents, promising Maria I would return before Noah finished his morning cartoons.

I left Sarah at the house. I left two trusted security guards at the gate. I thought we were safe. I thought we were protected.

I was wrong.

My phone rang. Maria. Screaming.

“Adrian—they’re gone. Noah is gone. Sarah is tied up in the kitchen. Vanessa was here. She took him. She took Noah and drove away in a black van.”

The world stopped spinning.

“Did she say where?” I demanded, already running for my car. “Did she say anything?”

“She said to tell you… if you want him back… bring the letter. Bring the DNA results. Come alone. To the old warehouse by the river. One hour. Or you will never see him again.”

I slammed the car door and started the engine. My hands shook so badly I could barely hold the wheel.

“Call the police,” I told Maria. “Give them the location. Tell them to move in quietly. But tell them to wait. Tell them not to go in until I am there. If they see police… they will hurt him.”

“Adrian, don’t go—”

“I have to,” I said. “That is my son. And I will not leave him alone with them.”

I hung up and drove. Every second felt like an hour. Every breath was agony. I gripped the steering wheel until my knuckles turned white, praying, begging, bargaining—anything to keep Noah safe.

They had him. Vanessa and Julian. They had taken him. They were holding him somewhere cold and dark. And they thought he belonged to them.

I arrived at the warehouse district fifty minutes later. I parked several blocks away. I checked my pockets—Elena’s letter. The DNA results. My phone, on silent, tracking my location so the police could follow.

I walked toward the warehouse.

The building was ancient—brick walls broken in places, windows shattered, the roof sagging toward the sky. The large metal doors stood slightly ajar.

I stepped inside.

It was dark. Dust motes danced in shafts of sunlight cutting through the broken roof. The air smelled of damp stone and rust.

And standing in the center of the room, holding Noah’s hand, was Vanessa.

Noah saw me. His face went white. He tried to run toward me, but Vanessa held him back, her grip tight on his arm.

“Daddy!” he cried out.

“NOAH!” I stepped forward, my voice breaking.

“Stop!” Vanessa shouted. She pulled Noah behind her. “Not one step closer, Adrian! Or I will take him away and you will never find us!”

I froze.

“Let him go, Vanessa. He has done nothing to you.”

Vanessa laughed—a wild, desperate sound.

“He belongs with us! Julian is his father! He belongs with his real family! Elena knew it! She told us! And you stole him! You kept him from us!”

“Vanessa,” I said gently. “Elena lied. She told Julian that to protect Noah. Noah is not his son. He is mine. Elena wrote the truth. She left proof.”

Vanessa hesitated. For a second, doubt flickered in her eyes.

“Liar! You are lying! Just like Elena lied! She told Julian! She swore it was true!”

“Because she was afraid of him!” I said. “She was afraid Julian would hurt Noah. She told him what he wanted to hear so he would stay away. But she wrote the truth down. She left a letter. And we have a DNA test. It proves Julian is not the father.”

I pulled the documents from my pocket and held them up.

“Read them, Vanessa. Elena’s own handwriting. The test results. Everything. Julian is not Noah’s father. He never was. Elena tricked you both. To save her son.”

Vanessa stared at the papers. She took a step forward, as if to take them. Then she stopped. Her face twisted.

“Julian said you would say that. He said you would forge evidence. He said you would lie to keep what is ours.”

“Vanessa—look at them! Read them! They are real!”

She shook her head, tears spilling over.

“I can’t! I can’t! If it isn’t true… then everything we did… everything we planned… Elena died for nothing! All of it… was for nothing!”

“Vanessa,” I said, taking one slow step forward. “Let Noah go. Walk away. Before it is too late. Julian is using you. He has been using you from the very beginning. He sent you to me. He made you pretend to love me. All for a lie. And now he is ready to destroy everyone—including you.”

Before Vanessa could reply, a shadow moved from the back of the warehouse.

A man stepped forward. Tall. Dark hair. Broad shoulders.

Julian Vane.

He walked calmly toward us. His eyes never left mine.

“Give me the papers, Vanessa,” he said. His voice was quiet. Dangerous.

Vanessa hesitated, then handed him the documents I had held up.

Julian read Elena’s letter first. Slowly. Line by line. His face remained expressionless. Then he looked at the DNA results.

He stood there for a very long time.

Silence filled the warehouse.

Then Julian looked up at me. His eyes were cold. Dead.

“She lied,” he said. “Elena looked me in the eye… and she lied.”

“To protect her son,” I said. “Just as I am protecting mine. Julian… let Noah go. There is no claim. No future. Nothing but pain and prison. Walk away.”

Julian looked down at Noah. Noah stared up at him, terrified, clutching Vanessa’s coat.

For a moment, I thought Julian would let him go. I thought he would see the truth. I thought he would realize Elena had manipulated him to save her child.

Instead, Julian tore the letter and the DNA results into tiny pieces.

He let the fragments fall to the dusty floor between us.

“She wrote it,” Julian said. “But she was lying. Just like you are lying. Just like everyone lies to me.”

He reached down and took Noah’s hand from Vanessa. Noah flinched away from him.

“Come on,” Julian said to Vanessa. “We are leaving.”

“Julian—” Vanessa’s voice trembled. “The papers… if they are true… if he isn’t yours…”

Julian turned on her, his face hard and terrifying.

“Elena lied! This man lies! Everyone lies! Noah is mine! And no one—no judge, no test, no dead woman’s letter—will take him away from me!”

He pulled Noah roughly toward the back of the warehouse. Noah cried out, struggling, looking back at me.

“DADDY!”

I lunged forward.

Julian pulled a knife from his coat and held it to Noah’s throat.

I froze.

“Take one more step,” Julian said, his voice shaking with rage and madness. “And I will end it right here. Believe me. I have nothing left to lose.”

Vanessa gasped. She reached toward Julian.

“Julian… no… put it away…”

“Get the car,” Julian snapped at her. “Now. Or I swear… I will do it.”

Vanessa looked at me. Her eyes were filled with horror. With realization. With terror.

She had finally seen the truth.

Julian was not fighting for his son. He was fighting for control. For revenge. For the belief that the world owed him something. And he would kill a child to prove he was right.

Vanessa backed away slowly. She looked at Noah. At the knife. At me.

Then she turned and ran toward the exit.

Julian dragged Noah toward the rear door. Noah sobbed, his little body shaking, his eyes locked on mine.

“Daddy help me! Please Daddy!”

“I’m coming, Noah!” I shouted. “I’m coming! Julian, don’t hurt him! Please! He is just a child!”

“He is mine!” Julian screamed. “And I will burn the world down before I let anyone take him!”

He pulled Noah through the doorway and disappeared into the shadows.

I ran after them. Burst through the door. Into the alley behind the warehouse.

Just in time to see Julian shove Noah into the back of a van. Vanessa sat behind the wheel, her face pale and terrified.

Julian jumped into the passenger seat. The van roared to life. Tires screeched against pavement. And they sped away—leaving me standing alone in the alley, staring at the cloud of dust, screaming my son’s name into the empty air.
