Chapter 10 - THE MIDPOINT REVELATION (CONTINUED)

I stared at the name on the screen until it blurred.
Julian Vane.
Sarah looked up at me, her voice low and tight.
“Julian Vane is Vanessa’s brother.”
The words hung in the air, heavy and impossible.
“Her brother?” I repeated, my mind reeling. “Vanessa never mentioned a brother. She told me she was an only child. That her parents were dead. That she had no family left.”
“She lied,” Sarah said. “Just like she lied about her name. Just like she lied about everything else. Julian Vane is her older brother. They grew up together in the same town—both of them running scams since they were teenagers. They have always worked together. Two people. One plan. Divide the work. Double the profit.”
I sank into the chair, the photograph still trembling in my hand.
All of it made sense now. The pieces that had never quite fit fell together with terrifying clarity. Vanessa hadn’t acted alone. She hadn’t come into my life on her own. She had been sent. Guided. Protected.
And that man in the photograph—the one standing in the hospital doorway, watching Elena hold her newborn son—he had been there all along. Watching. Waiting. Planning.
“Elena knew,” I whispered. “She wrote ‘Him’ on the back. She knew who he was. She knew he was dangerous. And she was afraid.”
“Elena didn’t just suspect Vanessa,” Sarah said gravely. “She suspected both of them. Together. A brother and sister team. Working in perfect sync. One charming her way into your life and your home. The other standing in the shadows, pulling the strings.”
I thought back to everything that had happened.
Vanessa getting a job at my company under a fake name. Then “accidentally” meeting me months later. Our relationship moving fast. Her becoming close to Noah. Her being inside my house the very night Elena died.
And always—just out of sight—there was Julian.
“Where is he now?” I asked.
Sarah tapped the screen.
“Julian Vane disappeared three years ago—right around the time Vanessa appeared in this city. Authorities believe he has been living under false identities, moving from place to place, always staying one step ahead. Adrian… if they are working together… then Vanessa is not the mastermind. She is the face. He is the brain. And he is still out there.”
My blood ran cold.
Vanessa had threatened me. She had blackmailed me. She had faked evidence and tried to ruin my reputation. But if Julian was truly the one in charge… then everything she had done was under his orders. Every move. Every lie. Every threat.
And if Elena had known about him… if she had discovered that both of them were working together… then she hadn’t just been hiding a journal. She had been hiding the existence of a dangerous, wanted criminal who had set his sights on everything I had. Including Noah.
Sarah leaned forward across the desk.
“Adrian, listen to me. If Julian is involved, then Vanessa is not acting alone. She will not fight fair. She will not follow the rules. Because she answers to him. And he is far more dangerous than she is. He has nothing to lose. And everything to gain.”
I stood up, my mind racing.
“Vanessa said Elena took one secret to her grave. One thing she never wrote down.”
I looked at the photograph again. At Julian standing in the doorway, watching Noah. Watching my son.
“What if the secret isn’t about money?” I said slowly. “What if it’s about Noah?”
Sarah went still.
“What do you mean?”
“Vanessa said: ‘when it comes out, you will wish you had never crossed me.’ If the secret was just about the theft or the fraud… Elena already wrote that down. We already have the proof. So what is left? What is worse than everything we already know?”
I picked up the photograph and held it to the light. At Julian’s face. At the way he looked at that newborn baby.
“Elena was afraid of him,” I said. “She wrote his name on the back of a photograph taken the day Noah was born. The day Noah was born, Sarah. Not two years later. Not when the money started disappearing. From the very beginning.”
Sarah’s eyes widened.
“Adrian… are you saying—”
“I’m saying Elena was afraid long before Vanessa ever got close to us. She was afraid from the moment Noah came into the world. What if Julian Vane isn’t just some criminal who decided to steal from me? What if he has a claim on Noah? What if that is the secret Elena took to her grave?”
Before Sarah could reply, my phone rang.
I didn’t recognize the number. But the area code was local.
I answered.
“Adrian Bennett,” a man’s voice said. Deep. Calm. Completely unhurried. “You don’t know me. But I know you. And I know you have been asking questions about my sister.”
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Julian.”
“Good,” he said. “Vanessa told me you were smart. She told me you were digging. I’m glad. It saves me the trouble of introducing myself.”
“Stay away from my family,” I said.
Julian laughed. It was a quiet, cold sound.
“Your family? That’s funny. Because I was thinking exactly the same thing about you. Stay away from what belongs to us.”
“Nothing belongs to you.”
“Oh, Adrian,” he said softly. “That is where you are wrong. That is the secret Elena took to her grave. That is the one thing she never wrote down. And that is the reason none of this is going to end the way you think it will.”
I gripped the phone.
“What do you want?”
“Simple,” Julian said. “You give Vanessa full custody of Noah. You sign over your share of the company. And you walk away. Forever. If you do that… I’ll let you live. If you don’t… well. People disappear all the time, Adrian. Wives. Envelopes. Journal entries. And soon… fathers.”
My heart hammered against my ribs.
“You’re bluffing.”
“Am I?” Julian’s voice dropped lower. “Ask yourself this. Why do you think Vanessa chose you? Why did she work her way into your life? Why did she wait until Noah was old enough to speak before she made her move? It wasn’t about the money, Adrian. Not really. It was about the boy.”
May you like
He paused. And then he said the words that shattered my entire world.
“Noah is my son, Adrian. Not yours.”
