Chapter 9: The Evidence That Changed Everything

Ethan asked to meet at the hospital.

I almost refused.

Almost.

But curiosity was stronger than fear.

I wanted answers.

I needed them.

Two hours later, Ethan sat across from me in the hospital room.

He looked exhausted.

Not like a villain.

That almost made it worse.

Villains were easier.

You could hate them.

You could understand them.

But betrayal from someone who once stood beside you was different.

It was grief.

“Why are you here?”” I asked.

Ethan looked at his hands.

“Because I know what I did was wrong.””

I waited.

“That’s not enough.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

Julian sat beside me.

Detective Harris stood near the window.

Every word was being recorded.

Ethan noticed.

“Good.””

I looked at him.

“Good?””

“Yes.””

He took a breath.

“I deserve whatever happens.””

The room stayed quiet.

“Start from the beginning,” I said.

Ethan nodded.

“After the company sale, your father approached me.””

“When?””

“Six months ago.””

I felt my stomach turn.

“What did he want?””

“At first?””

He looked at me.

“He wanted information.””

“What kind?””

“Your schedule. Your meetings. Your financial plans.””

I stared.

“And you gave it to him?””

His silence answered.

“Why?””

Ethan looked ashamed.

“Because I thought I was helping your family.””

I laughed softly.

“That’s what everyone says.””

“I know.””

He swallowed.

“Your father convinced me that you were overwhelmed. That you were making risky decisions. That he needed to step in before you destroyed everything.””

I looked at Julian.

The same lie.

Different person.

“They all thought they knew better.””

Ethan nodded.

“Yes.””

“What changed?””

His face tightened.

“The accident.””

I waited.

“Your father didn’t expect you to survive.””

The words landed like a physical blow.

My mother gasped.

Even Detective Harris looked shocked.

Ethan continued.

“He thought after the accident, you would be vulnerable. He planned to activate the documents and take temporary control.””

Julian spoke.

“Temporary control that would likely become permanent.””

Ethan nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

“And the crash?””

He looked down.

“I don’t know everything.””

“But?””

He hesitated.

“But I know your father was angry after it happened.””

“Why?””

“Because you survived.””

The room went silent.

My mother started crying.

I didn’t.

Somehow, I had no tears left.

“What evidence do you have?””

Ethan reached into his bag.

He pulled out a small hard drive.

“I copied everything.””

Julian took it.

“What’s on here?””

“Emails.””

“Between who?””

Ethan looked at me.

“Your father. Me. And someone else.””

My heart tightened.

“Who?””

Ethan didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“The truck company representative.””

Detective Harris stepped forward.

“What?””

Ethan looked at him.

“I don’t know if the crash was arranged.””

The room froze.

“But I know your father contacted the company before the accident happened.””

I looked at Julian.

My lawyer’s face had gone completely serious.

“What did he contact them about?””

Ethan whispered:

“Your vehicle.””

I felt sick.

My car.

The accident.

The hospital.

The will.

The lies.

Everything connected.

Detective Harris immediately took the hard drive.

“We’ll need to verify this.””

Ethan nodded.

“I understand.””

I looked at him.

“Why keep the evidence?””

His eyes met mine.

“Because I realized something.””

“What?””

He looked ashamed.

“I thought I was helping your father protect the family.””

A pause.

“But I realized I was helping him destroy you.””

For the first time since he walked in, I believed him.

Not because he deserved forgiveness.

Because guilt looked different from manipulation.

My phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

I opened it.

A single photograph appeared.

It was my father.

Standing outside the hospital.

Watching my room window.

The timestamp was from ten minutes earlier.

Under the photo was a message.

*He knows Ethan talked.*

Then another message arrived.

*You need to leave the hospital before he comes back.*

I looked up.

Julian noticed my face.

“What happened?””

I handed him the phone.

He read the message.

Then immediately stood.

“Miranda.””

His voice was different.

Urgent.

“What?””

He looked toward the door.

“Your father isn’t trying to win anymore.””

A chill moved through me.

“Then what is he trying to do?””

Julian stared at the hallway.

“He’s trying to erase the evidence.””

May you like

And at that exact moment…

The hospital lights went out.
