Chapter 7: The Secret Alicia Left Behind
Patricia's front door was already open when I arrived.
I barely had time to park before she appeared on the porch.
"Marcus, thank God.""
"Where's Jordan?""
"Inside. He's with my husband.""
"And Denise?""
Patricia looked toward the living room.
"She's in there with a woman named Claire.""
I stepped inside.
Denise was standing beside the fireplace, her arms crossed. Her orange handbag sat on the coffee table.
Beside her stood a woman in her late forties with short blonde hair and a folder pressed against her chest.
I recognized her from the photograph Angela had shown me.
Claire.
Denise's former business partner.
The woman connected to the $125,000 payment.
When Denise saw me, she immediately straightened.
"Marcus, finally.""
I ignored her.
I looked at Claire.
"Who are you?""
She extended her hand.
"Claire Whitmore. I used to operate a business with Denise.""
I didn't shake her hand.
"Patricia said you have something to discuss.""
Claire glanced at Denise.
"Yes. And I think you should hear it from me before she tells you another version.""
Denise laughed bitterly.
"Don't start acting like the victim, Claire.""
Claire opened her folder.
"Then perhaps you should explain why you used my money to secure a property transaction you had no authority to complete.""
Patricia sat down.
I looked at Denise.
"Is that true?""
She rubbed her forehead.
"I was going to pay her back.""
"With what?""
"Marcus, please. This is complicated.""
Claire placed a bank statement on the table.
"I transferred $125,000 to Denise's company four days ago. She told me she had secured an opportunity to purchase and renovate a residential property.""
I looked at the statement.
"Which property?""
Claire pointed to the address.
My address.
I felt my stomach tighten.
"She told you she was buying my house?""
"She said she had an agreement with her husband.""
Denise shook her head.
"That's not exactly what I said.""
Claire turned toward her.
"You told me the property was practically yours.""
"I said the transfer was being finalized.""
"With whose signature?""
Denise said nothing.
Claire looked at me.
"I wouldn't have transferred the money if I had known the paperwork was questionable.""
I took a breath.
"Did you know about Victor Hale?""
Claire's expression changed.
"Yes.""
"How?""
"Denise introduced him as a private investor. She said he would finance the acquisition and oversee the renovation.""
I looked at Denise.
"So you were planning to sell my house, use Claire's money, and settle your debts with Victor?""
Denise's voice rose.
"I was trying to fix a financial disaster!""
Claire laughed without humor.
"By creating another one?""
Denise turned on her.
"You promised me you would help.""
"I promised to invest in a legitimate property transaction. Not help you take someone's home.""
I looked at Patricia.
"Where's Jordan?""
"Upstairs.""
I nodded.
Then I turned toward Denise.
"Why did you tell Patricia that Alicia left something behind?""
For the first time, Denise looked genuinely uncomfortable.
She glanced at Claire.
Then at me.
"Because I found an old document.""
"What document?""
"A property agreement.""
I stared at her.
"Where?""
"In the office.""
"Which office?""
"Your home office.""
I remembered the missing pages from the trust folder.
"What did it say?""
Denise picked up her handbag.
"I don't have it anymore.""
"Where is it?""
She hesitated.
"Elaine has it.""
I stepped closer.
"Why would Elaine have an original document belonging to my late wife?""
Denise looked away.
"Because she was helping me understand the ownership structure.""
I felt a cold wave move through my chest.
"Denise, what did you find?""
She swallowed.
Then she said something I never expected.
"Alicia didn't leave the entire property to you.""
I stared at her.
"That's impossible.""
"Not according to the document.""
I turned toward Claire.
"Did you know about this?""
Claire shook her head.
"No.""
Denise continued.
"Your wife signed a separate agreement before she died. The house was supposed to be held for Maya.""
I frowned.
"That's exactly what the trust does.""
"Not exactly.""
She reached into her handbag and pulled out a photocopy.
It showed a document with Alicia's name.
I took it.
The heading read:
*BENEFICIAL OWNERSHIP DECLARATION.*
I scanned the first paragraph.
Then the second.
My hands began to tremble.
According to the document, Alicia had arranged for Maya to hold a beneficial interest in the property from the moment the original trust was established.
The arrangement included restrictions on transferring, selling, or borrowing against the property without independent legal oversight.
I looked up.
"Why didn't I know about this?""
Denise gave a bitter smile.
"Because you never read the entire file.""
"That's not possible.""
"Your wife arranged it before she died. She wanted Maya protected.""
I looked down again.
The signature appeared to be Alicia's.
But the document was incomplete.
Several pages were missing.
"Where are the original pages?""
Denise looked at me.
"Elaine has them.""
"Why?""
"Because she said they were necessary to complete the amendment.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"Which amendment?""
"The one transferring the property into my name.""
Claire stared at Denise.
"You told me the house was yours to sell.""
Denise didn't answer.
I placed the photocopy on the table.
"Did you know this document restricted the transfer?""
She shook her head.
"I only found out recently.""
"Then why were you trying to change the trust?""
"Because I wanted to protect myself and my boys.""
I looked at her.
"By taking something Alicia specifically protected for Maya?""
Denise raised her voice.
"I didn't know what the document meant!""
"Then why didn't you ask a lawyer?""
"Because I knew you'd never agree!""
There it was again.
The same excuse.
The same belief that her intentions justified whatever she did.
Claire closed her folder.
"I want my money back.""
Denise turned toward her.
"I told you I would pay you.""
"When?""
"Soon.""
"You said that four months ago.""
Denise's expression hardened.
"Don't threaten me.""
Claire stood.
"I'm not threatening you. I'm telling you that I am no longer participating in this.""
She turned to me.
"I'll provide my bank records and every communication I have.""
"Thank you.""
She walked toward the door.
Before leaving, she looked back at Denise.
"You should have stopped when you realized this involved a child.""
The door closed.
Denise sat down heavily.
Patricia looked at her daughter.
"How did it get this bad?""
Denise covered her face.
"I didn't have a choice.""
Patricia's voice cracked.
"Everyone has a choice.""
I walked toward the staircase.
"Jordan?""
A moment later, he appeared.
He looked nervous when he saw his mother.
"Can I talk to you, Dad?""
I nodded.
We stepped into the hallway.
"What's going on?"" he whispered.
"Your mother made some financial arrangements that weren't properly authorized.""
Jordan looked down.
"Is she going to prison?""
I crouched beside him.
"I don't know what the authorities will decide. That's not something you need to carry.""
He swallowed.
"She told me she was doing it for us.""
I nodded.
"She may have believed that. But doing something for your family doesn't make it right.""
Jordan began crying.
"She said Maya was the reason she couldn't give us a better life.""
I felt a sharp pain in my chest.
"Jordan, your sister is not responsible for your mother's financial decisions.""
He nodded.
Then he whispered, "I heard her talking to Elaine.""
"When?""
"Last week.""
"What did they say?""
"Elaine told Mom that the original papers could ruin everything if you found them.""
I straightened.
"What else?""
Jordan hesitated.
"Mom said there was one more document.""
"What document?""
He looked toward the living room.
"Something about Maya's grandmother.""
I felt my pulse quicken.
"My mother?""
He nodded.
"Mom said Alicia's family had another agreement.""
I stared at him.
"Did she say where it was?""
Jordan shook his head.
"No. But she said Elaine had the original.""
I thanked him.
Then I called Daniel.
He answered immediately.
I explained everything.
There was a long silence.
Finally, he said, "Marcus, I need you to send me a photograph of that declaration.""
I did.
He examined it.
"Don't let Denise or Elaine alter or destroy anything else. I'll contact the trust administrator and Alicia's former estate attorney.""
"Why?""
"Because if this declaration is authentic, it may contain restrictions that are stronger than the proposed amendment.""
I looked at the paper.
"What does that mean?""
"It means Maya's rights may be more extensive than we originally understood.""
I closed my eyes.
For years, I had believed I was the person protecting my daughter's future.
But Alicia had been protecting her long before I understood the danger.
That evening, I returned home with Angela.
Maya was sitting at the kitchen island, drawing in a notebook.
She looked up.
"Did you find out what Denise meant about Mom?""
I sat beside her.
"Your mother may have left some additional legal protections for you.""
Maya looked confused.
"Like the trust?""
"Something similar.""
She stared at the table.
"Did Mom know people might try to take the house?""
I thought carefully.
"I think she wanted to make sure you would always have somewhere safe to live.""
Maya touched the photograph of Alicia on the refrigerator.
"She always said this house would be mine one day.""
My throat tightened.
"She meant it.""
Maya smiled faintly.
Then her phone vibrated.
She glanced at the screen.
"That's Jordan.""
She opened the message.
It contained a photograph of an old envelope.
The writing on the front was familiar.
Alicia's handwriting.
Underneath it were five words.
*For Marcus, only when necessary.*
Maya looked at me.
"Where did Jordan get this?""
Before I could answer, another message arrived.
*Jordan:* Mom told me to hide it. I found it in her bedroom drawer. I think you need to see what's inside.
I stared at the envelope.
Then I called Daniel.
May you like
Because the handwriting on that envelope belonged to the woman I had buried eight years earlier.
And whatever she had left behind, Denise had been desperate to keep hidden.
