Chapter 5: The Stranger Who Came to Inspect My House
At 7:12 the following morning, someone rang my doorbell.
I was already awake.
I had spent most of the night changing passwords, securing financial records, and speaking with Daniel.
Maya was upstairs.
Angela had stayed overnight in the guest room.
When the doorbell rang again, I checked the security camera.
A woman in a navy blazer stood on the porch holding a clipboard.
Beside her was a man carrying a small leather case.
I opened the door but kept the security chain in place.
"Can I help you?""
The woman smiled professionally.
"Good morning. I'm Rebecca Collins with Sterling Residential. We have an appointment to inspect the property.""
I stared at her.
"An appointment with whom?""
"Denise Bennett.""
"Who authorized it?""
She checked her clipboard.
"Mrs. Bennett indicated that the property was being prepared for a sale.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"Did she tell you who owned the property?""
Rebecca hesitated.
"She said she was handling the family arrangements.""
"That's not what I asked.""
The man beside her looked uncomfortable.
Rebecca glanced down at her paperwork.
"The appointment was arranged through Westbrook Property Solutions.""
I opened the door fully.
"Please come in.""
They exchanged a glance before stepping inside.
I led them to the living room.
"Before we go any further, I want to make something clear. I did not authorize a sale, an inspection, or any transfer of ownership.""
Rebecca looked genuinely surprised.
"Mr. Bennett?""
"Yes.""
She checked the property address again.
"I'm sorry. We were given documents indicating that the owner had approved preliminary arrangements.""
"Who provided those documents?""
"Elaine Porter.""
I nodded slowly.
"Do you have a copy?""
Rebecca opened her clipboard.
"I can show you the authorization we received.""
She handed me a printed page.
It contained a summary of the proposed transaction.
The property was valued at $860,000.
The expected asking price was $895,000.
The seller's representative was listed as Denise Bennett.
I read the next section.
The proposed buyer was a company called Hawthorne Residential Holdings.
I had never heard of it.
"Who owns this company?""
Rebecca shook her head.
"We only received the instruction through the intermediary.""
I looked at her.
"Did you receive proof that Denise had authority to sell?""
"Yes. We received a document indicating that she had been appointed as the authorized property representative.""
"By me?""
"That's what the paperwork stated.""
I showed her the original trust deed on my phone.
"Then you should know that the property is held under a trust. Any transaction must comply with its terms.""
Rebecca's expression changed.
She examined the document.
"I'm going to need to contact our office.""
"Please do.""
She stepped outside to make a call.
The man remained near the entrance.
After several minutes, Rebecca returned.
"Mr. Bennett, our office has instructed us to suspend the inspection until ownership and authorization are verified.""
"Good.""
She looked embarrassed.
"I'm sorry for the inconvenience.""
"You're not the person I need an apology from.""
She nodded.
Before leaving, she gave me her business card.
"If you need written confirmation that we have suspended the appointment, please contact me directly.""
I watched them drive away.
Then I called Daniel.
"They came.""
He sighed.
"Who?""
"Sterling Residential. They were told Denise had authority to prepare the house for sale.""
"Did they inspect it?""
"No. I showed them the trust documents.""
"Good. Send me everything they provided.""
I photographed the paperwork.
Daniel promised to contact the real estate company and request preservation of all communications connected to the proposed sale.
At 8:30, Denise called.
I answered.
"Marcus, why did you embarrass me?""
I almost dropped the phone.
"Good morning to you, too.""
"Don't be sarcastic. The agents called me. They said you refused to cooperate.""
"Because I never authorized a sale.""
She sighed.
"You don't understand the arrangement.""
"Then explain it.""
"We were going to sell the house and buy something smaller.""
I stared at the kitchen wall.
"With whose money?""
"Our money.""
"The house is held in a trust.""
"Which you control!""
"Correct.""
"And I am your wife!""
"That doesn't make you the owner.""
She lowered her voice.
"Marcus, I was trying to make a better life for all of us.""
"By removing Maya from the inheritance?""
"Stop making everything about Maya!""
I closed my eyes.
"Denise, I have the documents.""
Silence.
"Which documents?""
"The proposed amendment. The notarial statement. The loan application. The inspection authorization.""
Her breathing changed.
"You've been talking to Daniel?""
"Yes.""
"He's filling your head with nonsense.""
"He has the paperwork.""
"Then let him explain it. You don't know what you're doing.""
I looked toward the staircase.
"Denise, where are you?""
"At my mother's.""
"Good.""
She paused.
"What does that mean?""
"It means I need some space, and Maya needs a home where she doesn't feel threatened.""
"Are you telling me I can't come home?""
"I'm telling you that you should speak with your attorney before returning to discuss anything involving the property.""
Her voice rose.
"You cannot lock me out!""
"I'm not discussing legal arrangements over the phone. Daniel will contact your attorney.""
Then I ended the call.
I knew the next steps needed to be handled carefully.
Denise was still my wife. The house had legal protections, but I wasn't going to make reckless decisions just because I was angry.
At 9:15, Angela came downstairs.
"Was that Denise?""
"Yes.""
"How did it go?""
"She thinks I embarrassed her.""
Angela shook her head.
"Some people can watch a building burn and complain about the smoke.""
I laughed despite myself.
Then she placed a cup of coffee in front of me.
"Have you heard from Patricia?""
"Not yet.""
At that moment, my phone rang.
Patricia.
I answered.
"Marcus?""
"Good morning.""
"I need to tell you something about Denise.""
I pulled out a chair.
"Go ahead.""
"She came to my house last night after Jordan arrived.""
"What did she say?""
"She wanted me to convince him to tell you that he misunderstood everything.""
My stomach tightened.
"Did she ask him to change his statement?""
"Yes.""
I stood.
"What did you tell her?""
"I told her that Jordan was not going to be used as a shield for her decisions.""
I exhaled.
"Thank you.""
Patricia continued.
"Marcus, I raised Denise. I know when she's hiding something.""
I waited.
"She's been under pressure for months. She's been receiving calls late at night. Sometimes she leaves the house and comes back furious.""
"Do you know who she's been talking to?""
"Not exactly. But I heard her mention someone named Victor.""
Victor.
I wrote the name down.
"Did she say anything else?""
Patricia hesitated.
"She told me that once the house was sold, everything would be settled.""
I stared at the paper.
"Settled with whom?""
"I don't know.""
"Patricia, did she ever ask you for money?""
A long silence followed.
Then she said, "Yes.""
"How much?""
"Twenty thousand dollars.""
I sat down.
"When?""
"About four months ago. She told me she needed money to resolve a private business problem.""
"Did you give it to her?""
"No. I asked questions, and she became angry.""
I thanked Patricia.
After ending the call, I contacted Daniel.
"Have you heard of someone named Victor connected to Westbrook Property Solutions?""
He asked me to spell the name.
Then he said, "I'll investigate.""
By lunchtime, I had a clearer picture of the proposed sale.
Westbrook Property Solutions was not a conventional real estate company.
It operated as an intermediary for private property transactions and distressed assets.
Daniel found a company registration connected to the same address.
The director was a man named Victor Hale.
I searched his name.
Several results appeared.
One was a business dispute involving unpaid loans.
Another was a civil claim alleging misleading property representations.
Nothing had been proven against him in the material we found, but it was enough to make me cautious.
At 2:30, Maya came home from school.
She placed her backpack beside the stairs.
"Is Denise coming back?""
I turned away from my laptop.
"Not today.""
She nodded.
"Did someone come to the house?""
I hesitated.
"Yes. A real estate agent.""
Her face went pale.
"Why?""
"Your stepmother had arranged an inspection without my authorization.""
Maya stared at me.
"Was she going to sell the house?""
"She was trying to arrange something involving the property. The legal details are being reviewed.""
Maya walked toward the living room.
Then she stopped.
"Does that mean we might lose it?""
I crossed the room and crouched beside her.
"No. We're taking steps to protect it.""
She nodded, but her eyes were wet.
"I don't want to lose Mom's garden.""
I looked toward the back windows.
Alicia had planted roses along the fence.
Every spring, Maya helped me trim them.
I took her hand.
"You won't lose those roses because someone else made a decision without permission.""
She leaned against me.
"Can we go outside?""
"Of course.""
We spent the next twenty minutes in the garden.
Maya pulled weeds around the rose bushes while I repaired a loose section of fencing.
For a little while, we didn't talk about Denise.
Then Maya asked something unexpected.
"Do you think Jordan knew she was trying to sell the house?""
"I don't know.""
"He's probably scared.""
"I think so.""
She pulled a weed from the soil.
"I don't hate him.""
I looked at her.
"You don't have to decide how you feel about anyone right now.""
She nodded.
That evening, I received an email from Daniel.
The subject line read:
*URGENT — ADDITIONAL FINANCIAL RECORDS IDENTIFIED.*
I opened the attachment.
It contained a spreadsheet recovered from the correspondence between Denise and Elaine.
There were several entries.
Payments.
Dates.
Account references.
One amount appeared repeatedly.
$75,000.
I looked closer.
The money was listed as an initial payment from a private lender.
Then I noticed the date.
The transaction had supposedly occurred two months earlier.
I called Daniel.
"Where did this spreadsheet come from?""
"An email account associated with Westbrook.""
"Is the money real?""
"We're checking. It may represent a proposed payment rather than a completed transfer.""
I read the final line.
*Outstanding balance: $214,000.*
"Daniel, what is this?""
He was silent for a moment.
"Marcus, it appears Denise may have had a substantial financial obligation before she began pursuing the house.""
"To whom?""
"We're still investigating.""
Then he added something that made my hands go cold.
"The name Victor Hale appears beside the outstanding balance.""
I stared at the screen.
Denise hadn't simply been trying to secure a better future for herself and her boys.
She might have been trying to use my house to settle a debt.
And someone was waiting for his money.
At 8:03 p.m., my phone rang from an unknown number.
I answered.
A man's voice came through.
"Mr. Bennett?""
"Who is this?""
"My name is Victor Hale. I believe we need to discuss your wife's financial arrangements.""
I stood.
"How did you get my number?""
"Denise gave it to me.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"What do you want?""
He chuckled.
"Your wife owes me money.""
"That's not my problem.""
"It became your problem when she offered me your house.""
I gripped the phone.
"She had no authority to do that.""
"Perhaps.""
His voice suddenly became colder.
"But she signed an agreement.""
"What agreement?""
"One that says I receive payment when the property transaction is completed.""
I looked toward the living room.
Maya was sitting on the sofa, watching television.
"That agreement is invalid.""
Victor laughed.
"Then I suggest you explain that to Denise.""
"I intend to.""
He paused.
Then he said, "One more thing, Mr. Bennett.""
"What?""
"Your wife told me something interesting about your daughter.""
My entire body went still.
"What did she tell you?""
"She said the girl would be out of the house soon.""
I tightened my grip on the phone.
"Don't mention my daughter again.""
Victor ignored me.
"Tomorrow, we'll see whether your wife can keep her promise.""
The call ended.
I stood motionless.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from Denise appeared.
*Denise:* Marcus, please don't make this worse. Victor is coming tomorrow. Just sign the papers, and we can still fix everything.
I read it twice.
Then I forwarded it to Daniel.
Because now I understood.
Denise wasn't merely afraid of losing the house.
May you like
She was afraid of someone who believed she had promised it to him.
And tomorrow, that man was coming to collect.
