Chapter 4: The Man Who Helped Me Bury My Wife

I read Ethan Cole's name three times before I accepted what I was seeing.

My business partner had stood beside me at my wedding to Denise. He had helped carry Maya into the house after she fell asleep in the back seat of my truck during a family vacation. He had visited Alicia in the hospital during her final weeks and held my shoulder when the doctors told me there was nothing more they could do.

For nearly ten years, I had trusted him with my business.

For six years, I had trusted him with my family.

Now his name sat beside Denise's on a company that had received money connected to a loan I never knowingly authorized.

Daniel closed the office door.

"Marcus, I need you to stay calm.""

I let out a humorless laugh.

"You're asking me to stay calm after discovering that my wife and my best friend may have used my daughter's college fund to finance a company I didn't know existed?""

"I'm asking you not to confront Ethan until we understand the evidence.""

Maya sat beside me, her face pale.

"Is Mr. Cole the man who takes you fishing?"" she asked.

I looked at her.

"Yes, sweetheart.""

She lowered her eyes.

"Does he know about the money Mom took from me?""

"I don't know yet.""

That was the hardest answer I had given my daughter in years.

Daniel turned his laptop toward us.

"The company was registered six months ago. The bank's preliminary records indicate that part of the loan proceeds went into an account controlled by the company. We need the full transaction history before drawing conclusions about who received the benefit.""

"What does the company own?"" I asked.

"That's what I'm checking.""

He typed for several minutes, then opened a public business filing.

Cole Family Property Holdings had been formed as a limited liability company. Its registered address was a commercial property on the outskirts of Atlanta.

I recognized the street.

It was near a row of small warehouses my construction firm had evaluated the previous spring.

"That building was for sale," I said.

"Ethan and I looked at it together.""

Daniel glanced at me.

"Did you agree to buy it?""

"No. We decided the asking price was too high. The property needed extensive structural repairs.""

He clicked another document.

The property had been purchased five months earlier.

The buyer was Cole Family Property Holdings.

The purchase price was $310,000.

I leaned back in my chair.

"How did they pay for it?""

"We need the closing records to establish that," Daniel said.

"But the timing warrants investigation.""

Maya's fingers tightened around the strap of her backpack.

"Is that where my money went?""

"I don't know yet," I answered.

She nodded, but her eyes filled with tears.

I hated that she had learned to expect uncertainty from the adults around her.

Daniel printed the documents and placed them in a folder.

"Here's what we do. We preserve your business records, request the original loan application, and notify the bank that you dispute the authorization. We also need to review the company's accounting records and determine whether any business funds were diverted.""

"What about Denise?""

"We don't warn her about the next steps. We let the evidence speak.""

I stood.

"I want to see Ethan.""

"Not alone, and not before we've secured the relevant records.""

I looked at him.

"Daniel, that man has access to my company.""

"Then we need to be especially careful. If you suspect financial misconduct, protect the business without destroying evidence or making unsupported accusations.""

He was right.

I hated that he was right.

On the drive back to Rachel's house, Maya remained silent until we reached the driveway.

"Dad?""

"Yes?""

"If Mr. Cole did this, does that mean he never cared about us?""

I turned off the engine.

For a moment, I saw the little girl who had once run to the door whenever Ethan visited because he always brought her a chocolate bar.

"I can't answer that yet," I said.

"Sometimes people do things that hurt others, even when they've been part of their lives for a long time. But whatever he did, it isn't because of anything you did.""

Maya stared through the windshield.

"I don't want to trust anyone anymore.""

I reached over and took her hand.

"You don't have to decide that today.""

She nodded.

Then she surprised me.

"Can I go back to school tomorrow?""

"Of course.""

"I don't want everyone knowing what happened.""

"We'll keep your personal business private as much as we can.""

She opened the car door, then paused.

"Dad?""

"Yes, sweetheart?""

"Please don't let Denise make me pay her again.""

My throat tightened.

"Never again.""

I watched her walk into the house before I called my operations manager, Robert.

"Marcus," he answered, "I was just about to call you.""

"What's going on?""

"Ethan came into the office this morning. He asked me to send him the financial records for the Atlanta project and the old equipment loan.""

My stomach tightened.

"Did you send them?""

"No. He said it was urgent, but something felt off. The request came from an email address I didn't recognize.""

"Forward it to Daniel. Don't alter anything, and don't confront Ethan.""

Robert paused.

"Is this about the bank?""

"How do you know about the bank?""

"I don't. But yesterday, Ethan asked me whether you'd been reviewing the company's accounts.""

I closed my eyes.

"What did you tell him?""

"That you were busy with family matters.""

"Good. From now on, any request involving loans, ownership, or transfers needs independent verification. Coordinate with our accountant and Daniel.""

"I understand.""

After the call, I sat in my truck for several minutes.

Then I opened the message from Ethan that had arrived earlier that afternoon.

*Hey, brother. Haven't heard from you. Everything okay at home?

Call me when you get a chance. We need to discuss the Atlanta numbers.*

He had added a photograph of the two of us at a company dinner.

We were standing with our arms around each other's shoulders, grinning like men who had conquered the world.

I remembered that night.

Ethan had raised his glass and told the room that my success was his success.

I had believed him.

I typed a response.

We need to talk about a financial matter. I'll contact you after reviewing some documents.

His reply came almost immediately.

Of course. Whatever you need.

Then another message appeared.

By the way, Denise called me. She says things are tense at home. Don't let a family disagreement damage everything you've worked for, Marcus.

I stared at the screen.

Denise had already contacted him.

I forwarded both messages to Daniel.

Then I called Ethan.

He answered on the second ring.

"Marcus! Finally. I've been trying to reach you.""

"Did you authorize a loan through Cole Family Property Holdings?""

Silence.

Not the ordinary pause of a man confused by a question.

A measured silence.

Then Ethan laughed.

"What are you talking about?""

"A loan for $184,000. Your name is on the company registration.""

"That sounds like some kind of clerical mistake.""

"Does it?""

"Marcus, I've got a meeting in twenty minutes. Let me look into it, and I'll call you back.""

"No. Answer the question.""

His voice hardened.

"I didn't take money from you.""

"I didn't say you did.""

Another silence.

Then he said, "Denise told me you were upset about the college fund.""

My grip tightened around the phone.

"Why did Denise tell you about my daughter's college fund?""

"Because she needed help.""

"Help with what?""

"Marcus, this is exactly why you shouldn't be making decisions while you're emotional. Denise has been trying to keep your household running while you're constantly away.""

I felt my pulse pounding.

"You knew she was charging Maya rent?""

"I knew there was an arrangement.""

"What arrangement?""

"Look, I don't know every detail.""

"You knew my daughter was paying my wife a thousand dollars a month, and you said nothing?""

"She has a job, Marcus. I assumed it was a family agreement.""

I stared at the steering wheel.

The casualness of his voice was almost worse than a denial.

Then Ethan said something that made me go completely still.

"Besides, if you really want to know where the money went, you should ask Denise what happened to Alicia's insurance payout.""

My mouth went dry.

"What did you just say?""

He exhaled sharply.

"Forget I said that.""

"No. What insurance payout?""

"Marcus, I have to go.""

"Ethan!""

The line went dead.

I sat motionless, the phone pressed against my ear.

Alicia's insurance payout.

I remembered receiving the money after her death. I had used part of it to pay medical bills, settle outstanding expenses, and establish Maya's college account.

The rest had been placed into a separate investment account under my supervision.

At least, I had believed it was under my supervision.

I called Daniel immediately.

When I explained what Ethan had said, Daniel became very quiet.

"Do you have the original insurance documents?""

"Somewhere in my files.""

"Find them. And don't access any account through Denise's devices or credentials. We'll request the records directly from the institutions.""

That evening, I went to Rachel's house and searched the box of documents I had brought from home.

Maya sat on the living room sofa, pretending to watch television while keeping one eye on me.

At the bottom of the box, I found Alicia's life insurance policy.

The payout amount was substantially larger than the balance I remembered placing into Maya's account.

I checked the attached deposit confirmation.

Then I checked the investment statement.

The numbers didn't match.

Not even close.

My phone vibrated.

An email from the insurance company had arrived in response to a records request Daniel had submitted.

The subject line read:

*Historical Beneficiary Disbursement Records—Alicia Hayes.*

I opened the attachment.

There were two transactions I didn't recognize.

One had occurred shortly after Alicia's funeral.

The second had occurred five months later.

Both were authorized through a financial representative whose name appeared on the final page.

I read it once.

Then again.

*Denise Cole-Hayes.*

Maya looked up from the sofa.

"Dad? What did you find?""

I couldn't answer.

Because for the first time, I understood that the college fund might not have been the beginning of the betrayal.

It might have been the last account Denise had touched.

And somewhere in the years after Alicia died, someone had gained access to money I had believed was safely protecting my daughter's future.

Someone had known exactly how much I trusted them.
