Chapter 7: The Bloodline Secret
The room became unbearably quiet.
I stared at Clara.
Then at my father.
Then back at the envelope sitting on the desk.
For a few seconds, I couldn’t understand the words she had just spoken.
Your real father.
The phrase didn’t make sense.
It couldn’t.
My father was Daniel.
He had raised me.
He taught me how to ride a bike.
He stayed awake when I had nightmares as a child.
He sat beside my hospital bed when I broke my arm.
He was the person I called when I didn’t know what to do.
He was my father.
Wasn’t he?
I looked at him.
“Dad?””
The word came out smaller than I wanted.
He didn’t answer.
And that silence destroyed something inside me.
“Dad.””
This time my voice was louder.
“Tell me she’s lying.””
Daniel looked at me.
His eyes were full of pain.
But not surprise.
That was what terrified me most.
He wasn’t shocked by Clara’s accusation.
He looked like someone who had been waiting for this moment for years.
“James…”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“No, don’t say my name like everything is normal.””
Clara stood silently, watching.
She looked satisfied.
Like she had finally moved the last piece on a chessboard.
“What does she mean?””
My father swallowed.
“Your mother wanted to tell you.””
“Tell me what?””
He looked down.
“James…”
I slammed my hand against the desk.
“Tell me!””
The sound echoed through the room.
Nobody moved.
Then Daniel whispered:
“I’m not your biological father.””
The words broke something that I didn’t know could break.
I stared at him.
Waiting for him to take them back.
Waiting for him to say he was angry and didn’t mean it.
But he didn’t.
The man who had raised me just stood there and let the truth destroy me.
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because my brain didn’t know what else to do.
“So all these years…”
My voice shook.
“All these years, you knew?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
“How long?””
“Since before you were born.””
I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.
Clara finally spoke.
“Now you understand why your mother was afraid.””
I turned toward her.
“Don’t pretend you care about her.””
Her smile faded slightly.
Good.
“You lied to everyone.””
She looked at me.
“I did what I had to do.””
“That’s what every liar says.””
Her eyes hardened.
“You think Daniel is innocent?””
“I don’t know what to think anymore.””
“That’s because you’ve only heard his version.””
She pointed toward the envelope.
“Open it.””
My father stepped forward.
“James, don’t.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
His face tightened.
“Because Clara is using this.””
“Maybe.””
I picked up the envelope.
“But maybe she’s telling the truth.””
The hurt on his face was immediate.
And I hated that it hurt me too.
Because even after everything, a part of me still wanted him to be my father.
Inside the envelope was a stack of documents.
The first page was a DNA report.
I knew what it was before I read the names.
My hands started shaking.
*James Carter.*
*Daniel Carter.*
*Probability of biological relationship: 0%.*
I couldn’t breathe.
I flipped the page.
The second name was there.
*Mark Reynolds.*
*Probability of biological relationship: 99.8%.*
I stared at the paper.
The world became distant.
The voices around me sounded underwater.
Mark.
The man standing outside my house.
The man who had known my mother.
The man who had been hiding.
He was my biological father.
I looked at Daniel.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“And you still raised me?””
His eyes filled with tears.
“James…”
“Answer me.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He took a shaky breath.
“Because you were my son.””
I looked away.
“You weren’t my father.””
His expression broke.
“I was.””
The certainty in his voice confused me.
“I changed your diapers. I stayed up with you when you were sick. I taught you everything I knew. I watched you become the person you are.””
He stepped closer.
“Biology doesn’t erase that.””
I wanted to believe him.
I really did.
But my entire identity had just been ripped apart.
Before I could respond, the door opened.
Mark walked inside.
Nobody had heard him enter.
My blood ran cold.
He looked at me.
And there was something in his expression I had never seen before.
Not confidence.
Not manipulation.
Pain.
“James.””
I couldn’t answer.
He looked at the DNA test in my hand.
“So you know.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Apparently everyone knew except me.””
Mark lowered his eyes.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“When?””
He didn’t answer.
“When I was thirty?””
“James.””
“No.””
I walked toward him.
“You don’t get to show up after all these years and act like you lost something.””
His face tightened.
“I did lose something.””
“What?””
“You.””
The answer should have meant something.
It didn’t.
Not yet.
“Where were you?””
Mark looked down.
“After your mother died, I thought Daniel would tell you.””
My anger exploded.
“So you just disappeared?””
“I was trying to keep you safe.””
I almost smiled.
“Everyone uses that excuse.””
Mark looked at Daniel.
“You know why I couldn’t come back.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“What are you talking about?””
Mark looked surprised.
“You never told him?””
“Told me what?””
Nobody answered.
I looked between them.
“What?””
Mark took a slow breath.
“Your mother didn’t die because of the accident.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then why?””
Mark looked at Clara.
And for the first time, Clara looked afraid.
“She was killed.””
The room went completely still.
I looked at Clara.
She shook her head.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Mark continued.
“Your mother was about to expose everything.””
“What everything?””
He looked at me.
“The company.””
My father stepped forward.
“Mark.””
“No, Daniel. He deserves to know.””
Mark pointed at Clara.
“She wasn’t trying to steal your money.””
Clara’s expression changed.
“She was trying to take control after your mother exposed what she had done.””
I looked at Clara.
“What did you do?””
She said nothing.
Mark continued.
“She forged documents. She moved money. She convinced Daniel that he was protecting you when he was actually helping her hide the truth.””
My father looked shaken.
“Is that true?””
Clara turned toward him.
“Daniel, don’t.””
That was enough.
My father’s face changed.
Because he heard it too.
Not an answer.
A warning.
A confession hidden inside fear.
I stepped closer.
“What happened the night my mother died?””
Clara stared at me.
For the first time, she looked vulnerable.
Then she whispered:
“Your mother wasn’t supposed to be in that car.””
Nobody moved.
“What does that mean?””
She looked at Daniel.
“She was going to meet someone.””
“Who?””
Silence.
Then Mark spoke.
“She was going to meet me.””
My heart stopped.
My mother was meeting Mark the night she died.
The man everyone had lied about.
The man who was my biological father.
The man Clara claimed was responsible.
I looked at Mark.
“Why?””
His eyes were filled with regret.
“Because your mother discovered the truth.””
“What truth?””
Mark looked at Clara.
And Clara looked back at him.
Two people carrying a secret.
Then Mark said:
“She discovered that the person trying to destroy your family wasn’t me.””
A pause.
“She discovered it was someone inside the house.””
My eyes moved slowly.
Toward Clara.
But before anyone could speak, my phone buzzed.
A new message.
Same unknown number.
I opened it.
And my heart stopped.
*Ask Clara why she kept your mother’s last phone call for fifteen years.*
I looked up.
Everyone was frozen.
Because Clara’s face had changed.
She knew exactly what message I had received.
And that meant one thing.
She had been the one hiding it.
I held up my phone.
“Clara.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“Where is my mother’s last phone call?”” I asked.
May you like
For the first time that night…
Clara looked afraid.
