Chapter 9: The Secret My Mother Took to Her Grave

The video lasted forty-seven minutes.

Nobody spoke.

My mother sat in front of the camera wearing a pale blue sweater.

She looked tired.

But her eyes were clear.

She looked exactly as I remembered her.

And for the first time in seven years, I could hear her speak directly to me.

“Hello, my beautiful girl.””

I covered my mouth.

My father sat down.

David stood behind him.

The investigator remained near the door.

My mother smiled faintly.

“I don't know when you'll see this. I hope it is many years from now, when you are old enough to understand the decisions I've made.””

She paused.

Then she looked down.

“Madison, I need you to know that none of this is your fault.””

I began crying.

My mother continued.

“Your father loves you. I know that. But love doesn't always mean someone understands what is happening around them.””

My father closed his eyes.

“I have discovered that someone has been using our company to move money illegally. I originally believed Daniel was responsible. Then I found documents suggesting that someone else was helping him.””

She took a breath.

“I didn't want to believe it.””

The camera shifted slightly.

My mother reached for a glass of water.

Then she continued.

“The person helping Daniel had access to our home, our financial records, and information about Madison.””

I looked at my father.

He was staring at the screen.

My mother leaned closer.

“Madison, if you are watching this, you need to understand why I created the trust.””

She picked up a folder.

“Your father built Ellis Development with money from his first business. I contributed my own inheritance and invested in several projects. Together, we created something valuable.””

She opened the folder.

“But when I discovered the financial irregularities, I realized that the person responsible might eventually try to take control of everything.””

Her voice softened.

“I wanted to protect your future.””

She held up a document.

“This trust was designed to protect your education, your medical care, and your home. It was not designed to make you wealthy. It was designed to make sure you would always have somewhere safe to stand.””

I wiped my face.

Then my mother said something that made my father look up.

“Robert, if you're watching this too, please don't blame yourself for what happened.””

He lowered his head.

My mother looked directly into the camera.

“I know you trusted the wrong people. I did too.””

The video continued.

She explained that Daniel had been moving money through several companies.

But she had discovered that he wasn't acting alone.

Someone inside the household had been providing him with private financial information.

Someone had been copying documents.

Someone had been reporting my father's business movements.

My mother held up another paper.

“This is the authorization I found.””

I leaned forward.

It showed a signature.

The same signature I had seen on the disputed scholarship form.

Except this one was older.

And the name beneath it was unmistakable.

Rhonda Ellis.

My mother continued.

“Rhonda has been working with Daniel for longer than Robert realizes.””

My father suddenly stood.

“What?””

The investigator raised his hand.

“Please, Mr. Ellis. Let the video continue.””

My mother looked deeply sad.

“I tried to speak with Rhonda. I wanted to give her an opportunity to explain herself. She told me Daniel had promised her financial security.””

She shook her head.

“But what frightened me most was not the money.””

She paused.

“It was what Daniel said about Madison.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“He told Rhonda that once Robert married her, he would have access to our household records. He wanted information about the trust. He wanted to know when Madison would become the beneficiary.””

My father gripped the back of the chair.

My mother continued.

“I don't believe Rhonda understood how dangerous Daniel was at first. But by the time she realized what he was doing, she had already helped him.””

I turned toward the real Rhonda's empty seat in my mind.

Everything was beginning to make sense.

The sudden marriage.

The financial access.

The pressure about my scholarship.

The attempts to transfer the trust.

My mother had seen the pattern before any of us.

Then she said something unexpected.

“However, Madison, there is another person involved.””

The room became silent.

My mother's eyes filled with tears.

“I discovered that someone had been using Robert's signature to authorize payments he never approved.””

My father whispered, “No.””

My mother continued.

“The person responsible had access to his personal documents and knew how to imitate his handwriting.””

She lifted another paper.

“I found the original authorization in a locked office drawer.””

Then she said the name.

“Peter Caldwell.””

David nodded slowly.

My father sat down.

“Peter…”

My mother continued.

“He was supposed to be our financial adviser. We trusted him with our accounts. But he had been helping Daniel conceal the missing money.””

I felt sick.

“So Peter was involved too.””

David answered quietly.

“Yes.””

My mother looked back into the camera.

“I confronted him. He denied everything. But I had already made copies of the records.””

She held up a small envelope.

“I planned to give them to the authorities.””

Then her expression changed.

She looked frightened.

“On the evening I recorded this, I discovered something else.””

The video paused briefly.

My mother took a breath.

“Someone had tampered with my car.””

My father covered his mouth.

I felt tears running down my cheeks.

“I knew the brakes had been damaged. I had photographs. I had already arranged to have the vehicle inspected.””

She looked directly into the camera.

“I was going to take those photographs to the police the following morning.””

Then she whispered:

“But someone knew I was going.””

The video continued.

“I don't know who changed the brakes. I don't know whether it was meant to frighten me or whether someone intended something worse.””

She looked down.

“If I don't come home, I want the police to investigate Daniel, Peter, and anyone who helped them.””

My father began crying.

I had never seen him cry like that.

Not at my mother's funeral.

Not when I had surgery.

Not when the doctors told us my eye might never fully recover.

But now he was crying.

My mother looked back up.

“Robert, please protect Madison. And please don't allow anyone to convince her that she is a burden.””

I pressed my hand against my chest.

My mother smiled.

“She is the best thing we ever made together.””

Then the video changed.

A second recording appeared.

My mother was no longer sitting in the bedroom.

She was standing in a hallway.

Her voice was quieter.

“I have just spoken to someone who says they can help me.””

She looked toward the door.

“I'm not sure I trust them.””

A knock sounded.

My mother turned.

“Come in.””

The door opened.

A man's voice spoke.

“Lisa, we need to leave.””

I froze.

I recognized that voice.

My father looked at the screen.

“That's me.””

My mother smiled.

“Robert, you're early.””

The man entered the room.

He was wearing the same navy jacket my father had worn in an old family photograph.

But something was wrong.

My father leaned closer.

“That isn't me.””

David turned sharply.

“What?””

My father pointed at the screen.

“Look at his left hand.””

The man had a wedding ring.

But my father wore his ring on the opposite hand because of an old injury.

The man in the video wore it on the left.

My mother's expression changed.

“Who are you?””

The man stepped closer.

Then the recording became distorted.

A loud noise sounded.

The image went black.

I stared at the screen.

“What just happened?””

The investigator examined the file.

“It appears the recording was interrupted.””

My father looked pale.

“Someone impersonated me.””

David opened his notebook.

“Do you recognize the voice?””

My father shook his head.

“Not yet.””

I looked at the screen.

There was a timestamp.

The recording had been made on the night my mother died.

And beneath it was another file.

*LISA_FINAL_AUDIO_02.wav*

David opened it.

The audio began with static.

Then my mother's voice.

“Robert, if you ever find this, please remember that the man who came to the house was not you.””

My father closed his eyes.

I felt my entire body go cold.

She continued.

“I don't know who sent him. But he knew your voice. He knew your clothes. And he knew exactly how to make me believe he was you.””

A man's voice followed.

“Lisa, we need to hurry.””

My mother answered.

“Where is Robert?””

“Waiting for you.””

“Then call him.””

A pause.

The man sighed.

“Lisa, stop making this difficult.””

My mother whispered:

“Who are you?””

The audio ended.

Nobody moved.

Then David looked at my father.

“Robert, where were you that evening?””

My father stared at the floor.

“I was at the office.””

“Can you prove it?””

“Yes.””

He immediately reached for his phone.

“I had a meeting with three investors. It lasted until almost midnight.””

David nodded.

“Then we need those records.””

My father looked at me.

“Madison, I never went to the house that night.””

I believed him.

But the realization was terrifying.

Someone had impersonated my father.

Someone had used his appearance or voice to get close to my mother.

Someone had been involved in the events that led to her death.

And my mother had known she was in danger.

I looked at the video again.

“There's something else.””

David turned.

“What?””

“The recording says the man knew Dad's clothes.””

I pointed to the screen.

“He was wearing a navy jacket. Maybe the jacket was taken from Dad's office.””

My father frowned.

Then he suddenly remembered something.

“My office.””

“What?””

“After Lisa died, I found one of my suits missing.””

David looked up.

“What suit?””

“A navy jacket. I thought it had been taken to the cleaners.””

The investigator immediately made a note.

My father sat down heavily.

“Someone had access to my office.””

I stared at the old video.

Then I noticed something in the background.

A photograph.

It was hanging beside the bedroom door.

The picture showed my mother, my father, and me at a family event.

But there was something unusual about it.

Behind my mother stood a man.

His face was partially visible.

I leaned closer.

“Dad, who is that?””

My father looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“That's Daniel.””

I stared at him.

“But Mom said she was alone.””

My father shook his head.

“No. Look at the reflection in the mirror.””

I enlarged the image.

There was another figure standing behind the camera.

A woman.

The diamond necklace.

Rhonda.

David slowly closed the laptop.

“Robert, I think we have enough to request a formal reopening of the investigation into Lisa's death.””

My father nodded.

Then he turned toward me.

“Madison, I'm sorry.””

I looked at him.

“For what?””

“For letting you grow up in a house where the people who should have protected you were hiding things.””

I wanted to tell him it wasn't his fault.

But I couldn't.

Not yet.

There were too many unanswered questions.

And then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A familiar male voice spoke.

“Madison Ellis?””

“Yes. Who is this?””

“My name is Daniel Whitmore.””

My blood ran cold.

My father immediately reached for the phone.

But Daniel continued.

“Your mother left you something that was never supposed to be found.””

I stared at the screen.

“What do you want?””

He laughed softly.

“I want to correct a misunderstanding.””

“What misunderstanding?””

“Your mother didn't die because someone wanted her money.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Then why did she die?””

His voice dropped.

“Because she discovered who your real father was.””

The room went silent.

My father looked at me.

Daniel continued.

“And Robert Ellis has been lying to you for eighteen years.””

The call disconnected.

I stared at my father.

He didn't move.

Then, slowly, he sat down.

May you like

And whispered:

“Madison, there's something about your birth that I never told you.””
