Chapter 3: The Name Hidden in the Records
The person who received the money was someone I never expected to hear.
“Your brother.””
For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood him.
I looked at Dad.
Then at Marcus.
Then back at Dad.
“What?””
My father’s face was pale.
“The fifteen thousand dollars went to Marcus.””
The backyard became completely silent.
Marcus looked confused.
“No.””
His voice was barely above a whisper.
“No, that’s not possible.””
Emily immediately stepped between us.
“Daniel, don’t make this dramatic.””
Dad stared at her.
“Dramatic?””
His laugh was short and empty.
“My daughter’s entire college fund is gone, and you’re telling me I’m being dramatic?””
Emily’s expression hardened.
“You don’t know what happened.””
“Then tell me.””
She looked at Marcus.
Then away.
That tiny movement told me everything.
Marcus didn’t know.
At least not all of it.
I looked at him.
“You received fifteen thousand dollars?””
His face changed.
“Sophie, I swear, I didn’t know.””
I wanted to believe him.
But there was a part of me that kept replaying the image of him standing beside that car.
Smiling.
Holding the keys.
While my future disappeared.
“Then where did it go?”” I asked.
Marcus looked at his mother.
“Mom?””
Emily sighed.
“I was going to handle this.””
Dad stepped forward.
“No. You were going to hide it.””
Emily’s eyes flashed.
“You think you know everything?””
“No,” Dad said.
“I know exactly what I know. My daughter saved eighty-five thousand dollars. Thirty-five thousand bought a car.
Fifty thousand went to your mother. Fifteen thousand went to Marcus.””
He paused.
“Actually, that means more than eighty-five thousand dollars moved.””
Nobody spoke.
Because we all realized it at the same time.
Dad looked back at the account.
“Sophie.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“There’s another problem.””
I felt cold.
“What problem?””
He showed me the screen.
The transactions continued.
There were withdrawals.
Transfers.
Payments I didn’t recognize.
My hands started shaking.
“I thought it was all gone.””
Dad nodded slowly.
“I did too.””
He looked at Emily.
“But there’s more.””
Emily’s face lost its color.
“Daniel, stop.””
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“You stop.””
For the first time since I had known her, Emily looked small.
Not powerful.
Not confident.
Just caught.
Dad scrolled further.
Then he stopped.
His eyebrows pulled together.
“What is this?””
I looked at the screen.
There was a payment labeled:
*Family Support Account*
The amount was $10,000.
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Emily didn’t answer.
Dad looked at her.
“What is a Family Support Account?””
She crossed her arms.
“I don’t have to explain every little thing.””
Dad stared at her.
“You absolutely do.””
She shook her head.
“You’re acting like I spent every penny on myself.””
“Did you?””
The question hit hard.
Emily looked away.
That was enough.
I felt tears forming again.
“How long?””
Everyone looked at me.
“How long were you taking money from my account?””
Emily’s expression changed.
“Sophie—”
“How long?””
My voice cracked.
“I trusted Dad when he told me my money was safe.””
The words came out faster.
“I checked that account every month. Every month I watched it grow. I planned my entire life around that money.””
Emily looked uncomfortable.
But she still didn’t apologize.
That hurt the most.
Instead, she said,
“You’re acting like money is more important than family.””
I stared at her.
“No.””
My voice became quiet.
“You made money more important than me.””
Nobody spoke.
Marcus looked down.
For the first time, I saw shame on his face.
“Sophie…”
I looked at him.
“What?””
He swallowed.
“I really didn’t know.””
I wanted to yell.
I wanted to ask how he could accept something so expensive without asking questions.
But then I remembered something.
Marcus had always been protected from consequences.
By Emily.
By everyone.
He had never needed to worry.
“Where is the car?”” Dad suddenly asked.
Marcus looked confused.
“What?””
“The car.””
Dad pointed toward the driveway.
“Where is the paperwork?””
Marcus hesitated.
Emily immediately answered.
“I have it.””
Dad turned toward her.
“Of course you do.””
He walked toward the house.
“Daniel, where are you going?””
“To find out exactly what happened.””
I followed him.
So did Marcus.
Emily stayed behind for a moment before rushing after us.
Inside the house, everything looked normal.
That almost made it worse.
The family photos on the walls.
The decorations.
The furniture we had chosen together.
It all looked like a happy home.
But now I couldn’t stop thinking about what had been happening behind my back.
Dad went straight to the kitchen counter where Emily kept important documents.
He opened the drawer.
Nothing.
He opened another.
Still nothing.
Emily stood nearby.
“You’re invading my things.””
Dad didn’t even look at her.
“I’m looking for my daughter’s financial records.””
“She’s an adult.””
I froze.
“What?””
Emily looked at me.
“You’re old enough to understand responsibility.””
I stared at her.
“So I’m old enough to understand responsibility, but not old enough to decide what happens to my own money?””
She didn’t respond.
Dad opened the cabinet above the refrigerator.
Inside were several envelopes.
He pulled them down.
One by one.
Then he found a folder.
He opened it.
The room went silent.
“What?””
I stepped closer.
Dad looked through the papers.
Then he looked at Emily.
“You took out a loan.””
Emily said nothing.
Dad held up a document.
“Against what?””
Her face changed.
“Sophie’s account.””
My heart stopped.
“What does that mean?””
Dad looked at me.
“It means she used your savings as security.””
I felt like the floor disappeared.
“She did what?””
Emily finally broke.
“I was going to fix it.””
Dad shook his head.
“How?””
She didn’t answer.
“How were you going to fix it, Emily?””
She wiped her face.
“I thought I could make more money.””
“With what?””
Silence.
Dad looked at the documents again.
Then he found something else.
A second folder.
This one had a different name.
He opened it.
And his expression changed.
Not anger.
Fear.
“What?””
I stepped closer.
“What did you find?””
Dad stared at the papers.
Then he slowly looked at Marcus.
Marcus noticed.
“Why are you looking at me?””
Dad didn’t answer immediately.
He picked up one document.
“Marcus.””
His voice was different.
“Did you know your mother opened something in your name?””
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
Emily’s eyes widened.
“Daniel, don’t.””
Dad ignored her.
He turned the paper around.
Marcus walked closer.
Then he read the page.
His face went completely blank.
“What is this?””
Nobody answered.
He looked at his mother.
“What did you do?””
Emily started crying.
“I was trying to help you.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
He stepped back.
“You used Sophie’s money…”
His voice cracked.
“And you put something in my name?””
Dad looked at the document again.
Then he whispered,
“This isn’t just about the car.””
My heart pounded.
Because I knew something much bigger had been hidden.
Dad grabbed the rest of the papers.
And on the final page was a signature.
A signature that changed everything.
Because it wasn’t Emily’s.
It wasn’t Marcus’s.
May you like
It was mine.
But I had never signed it.
