Chapter 5: The Name on the Loan
I didn't sleep Tuesday night.
At 2:14 in the morning, I was sitting on the edge of my bed with the unknown number's message open on my phone.
*The house isn't the only thing he put in your name.*
I read it again.
Then again.
Downstairs, the house was silent.
Cedric and Jessica had gone to bed hours earlier.
Or at least I assumed they had.
I opened my banking app.
Everything looked normal.
My savings were untouched.
My checking account showed the usual balance.
No unfamiliar withdrawals.
No strange deposits.
Nothing.
I almost convinced myself the message was a cruel prank.
Then I noticed something.
A notification from my credit monitoring service.
I had ignored it two days earlier because I had been busy with the house.
I opened it.
My heart began pounding.
There was a new inquiry.
Not on my mortgage.
Not on a credit card.
A business loan inquiry.
Under my name.
I sat completely still.
Then I took a screenshot.
At 6:30, I called Dave.
He answered immediately.
“Tatum?””
“I found something.””
His voice became alert.
“What?””
“There's another loan.””
Silence.
“Where?””
“Under my name.””
“I'll come over.””
“Bring someone who understands financial records.””
“I know a forensic accountant.””
“Call them.””
“I will.””
At eight, Dave arrived with a woman named Patricia Cole.
She was in her forties, wore a gray suit, and carried a laptop bag.
She introduced herself without wasting time.
“I work with attorneys and banks to reconstruct financial activity.””
I invited her inside.
Cedric was already at the kitchen table.
He looked at Patricia.
“Who's this?””
I answered.
“Someone helping me understand my finances.””
Cedric laughed.
“Your finances?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I found something.””
His smile disappeared.
Patricia opened her laptop.
“Mr. Harper, have you ever applied for a business loan using your mother's information?””
Cedric stood abruptly.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“That's not an accusation. It's a question.””
Cedric looked at me.
Then at Dave.
“You people are insane.””
Jessica came downstairs.
“What is going on?””
Cedric pointed toward the door.
“We're leaving.””
Jessica looked confused.
“What?””
“Now.””
I watched him.
“Why?””
He glared at me.
“Because you clearly don't want us here.””
“You were going to leave anyway.””
“Not like this.””
I stood.
“Cedric, sit down.””
“No.””
“Sit.””
Something in my voice made him stop.
He slowly sat.
Patricia turned the laptop toward me.
“There are three financial applications connected to your identity.””
My throat tightened.
“Three?””
“Yes.””
“One is the property inquiry. Another is a personal credit line. The third is a business credit application.””
I looked at Cedric.
“Do you know anything about this?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
Patricia watched him carefully.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
“Then you won't mind if we verify the application records.””
Cedric laughed.
“You think I forged my mother's signature?””
“I didn't say that.””
“You're implying it.””
Patricia closed the laptop.
“We'll let the records speak.””
Cedric stood again.
“This is harassment.””
Jessica grabbed his arm.
“Cedric.””
He looked at her.
“Get the kids.””
She hesitated.
“Where are we going?””
“Anywhere.””
I watched him storm toward the stairs.
Patricia turned to me.
“Don't confront him further until we know what happened.””
I nodded.
Dave's phone rang.
He answered.
“Yes?””
He listened.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“I'll send it.””
He hung up.
“What?””
“The county records office found something.””
“What?””
He placed his phone on the table.
“There's a recorded document from seven months ago.””
My stomach dropped.
“What document?””
“A power of attorney.””
I stared at him.
“That's impossible.””
“It's under your name.””
“I never signed one.””
Patricia leaned forward.
“Who is the agent?””
Dave looked at the screen.
“Cedric Harper.””
I felt as though the floor had shifted.
“No.””
Patricia's voice was quiet.
“Do you remember signing anything for Cedric?””
“No.””
“Anything at all?””
“No.””
I looked toward the staircase.
Cedric had asked me to sign papers many times.
Insurance forms.
School forms.
A refinancing document for his car.
Medical paperwork for the children.
Once, he had told me I needed to sign something because he was "too busy.""
I had trusted him.
I had barely looked at the pages.
I covered my mouth.
“Oh God.””
Patricia looked at me.
“What?””
“I may have signed something.””
Dave sat down.
“When?””
“I don't know.””
Cedric came downstairs carrying two duffel bags.
He stopped when he saw our faces.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“Did you ever ask me to sign a power of attorney?””
He froze.
It lasted less than a second.
But I saw it.
His eyes flicked toward Patricia.
Then Dave.
Then me.
“No.””
“You're sure?””
“Yes.””
Patricia closed her laptop.
“Thank you.””
Cedric frowned.
“For what?””
“For answering.””
She stood.
“I'll be in touch through your mother.””
Cedric stepped toward her.
“You're accusing me.””
“No.””
“You are.””
“No,” Patricia said calmly.
“I'm documenting.””
He pointed at the door.
“Get out.””
Dave stood.
“We're leaving.””
Patricia gathered her things.
Before walking out, she leaned toward me.
“Don't sign anything else.””
I nodded.
After they left, Cedric stood in the kitchen.
Jessica came downstairs with Sophie and Ethan.
“Dad,” Sophie said, “where are we going?””
Cedric looked at her.
“I don't know.””
Ethan looked at me.
“Grandma?””
I forced a smile.
“It's okay, sweetheart.””
Cedric turned on me.
“No, it isn't.””
“Cedric—”
“You've made your choice.””
“I have.””
“You're humiliating me.””
“I didn't forge anything.””
His face went white.
“I didn't either.””
“Then you have nothing to fear.””
He looked at me for a long time.
Then he said quietly, “You really think I'd do this to you?””
I remembered the steak.
The credit card.
The unpaid bills.
The power of attorney.
The house.
I answered honestly.
“I don't know what you're capable of anymore.””
His expression collapsed for a moment.
Then anger replaced it.
“You're going to destroy your own son.””
“No.””
I looked at Sophie and Ethan.
“I'm going to stop destroying myself.””
Cedric picked up the duffel bags.
He led the children outside.
Jessica stayed behind.
She looked at me.
“Tatum.””
“Yes?””
Her voice trembled.
“I didn't know.””
I believed her.
At least I wanted to.
“Didn't know what?””
She looked toward the front door.
“Cedric told me the house was basically his.””
My stomach tightened.
“He told you that?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Before we moved in.””
I sat down.
Jessica wiped her eyes.
“He said you had promised him the house.””
“I never did.””
“I know that now.””
She swallowed.
“There was something else.””
I looked up.
“What?””
“He had me sign something too.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
“I thought it was for the children's school.””
She opened her phone.
“I don't know what it was.””
“Jessica.””
She looked terrified.
“I have a copy.””
She handed me her phone.
There was a photograph of a document.
I zoomed in.
At the top was a company name.
*Harper Family Holdings LLC.*
My name appeared beneath it.
So did Cedric's.
And Jessica's.
I stared at the screen.
“I don't own a company.””
Jessica whispered, “Apparently you do.””
I looked at her.
“Where did you get this?””
“Cedric sent it to me.””
“When?””
“Three months ago.””
I stood.
“Where is the original?””
“I don't know.””
“Who prepared it?””
She shook her head.
“Cedric.””
I looked toward the window.
His car was still in the driveway.
He hadn't left.
He was standing beside it, talking to Ethan.
I stepped outside.
“Cedric!””
He turned.
“What?””
I held up my phone.
“What is Harper Family Holdings?””
His face changed instantly.
Jessica came outside behind me.
Cedric looked at her.
“You told her?””
She shook her head.
“You're unbelievable,” he whispered.
I stepped closer.
“Answer me.””
He looked at me.
Then he smiled.
Not the nervous smile from Sunday.
Something colder.
“You wanted to know what belongs to you?””
I felt a chill.
“What?””
He pointed toward the house.
“You should ask what belongs to me.””
Then he got into his car.
The engine started.
Before he drove away, he lowered the window.
“You're going to wish you'd never opened that folder.””
His tires sprayed water across the driveway.
I stood there watching him disappear.
Behind me, Jessica whispered,
“Tatum, I think I know where the original documents are.””
I turned.
“Where?””
May you like
She looked toward the house.
“In your bedroom.””
