Chapter 6: The Recording Nobody Was Supposed to Hear

I left Vanessa's office with the USB drive in my pocket.

I didn't drive home immediately.

Instead, I pulled into a quiet parking lot and called Attorney Whitmore.

He answered on the second ring.

"Marcus?""

"I have something.""

"What is it?""

"A USB drive. Vanessa claims it contains a recording of her final conversation with Danielle at the hospital.""

There was a long silence.

"Did she give it to you voluntarily?""

"Yes.""

"Did she explain what it contains?""

"Not really. She said my mother knows something about who was supposed to be in the hospital room.""

Whitmore exhaled.

"Do not open it on a personal computer. Bring it to my office.""

"Can you listen to it today?""

"I'll arrange for a forensic specialist to make a verified copy and preserve the original.""

I looked down at the small black drive.

"Samuel, I need the truth.""

"I understand, Marcus.""

He paused.

"But I want you to prepare yourself. Whatever is on that recording may be difficult to hear.""

I ended the call.

Then I sat there for nearly twenty minutes.

My sister had just implied that my wife hadn't wanted me at the hospital.

And somehow, my mother knew something about it.

I drove to Whitmore's office.

At 1:30 p.m., I sat in a small conference room with Whitmore and a digital forensics specialist named Daniel Brooks.

The USB drive had been copied.

The original was sealed in an evidence bag.

Daniel connected the duplicate to an isolated laptop.

"There's one audio file," he said.

"How long?""

"Seventeen minutes and forty-two seconds.""

I swallowed.

"Play it.""

The first few seconds contained background noise.

A door opening.

Footsteps.

Then I heard my wife's voice.

"Vanessa?""

My entire body went rigid.

It was Danielle.

I hadn't heard her voice in eighteen months.

I stared at the screen.

Then a second voice answered.

"Yes. I'm here.""

Vanessa.

The recording continued.

Danielle sounded tired.

"Where's Marcus?""

Vanessa replied, "He's at home with Lily.""

"Why?""

"Because I told him you were stable.""

There was a pause.

Then Danielle said something that made my stomach turn.

"You lied to him.""

Vanessa sighed.

"I didn't want him worrying.""

"Don't pretend you care about him.""

I closed my eyes.

The recording crackled.

Vanessa spoke again.

"Danielle, we need to settle this.""

"There's nothing to settle.""

"You promised me.""

"I promised to help you. I never promised to give you Lily's money.""

A chair moved.

Then Vanessa said, "I sacrificed years helping this family.""

Danielle answered quietly.

"You chose to help because you wanted something in return.""

"That's not fair.""

"Neither is stealing from your niece.""

My hands tightened.

The conversation continued.

Vanessa's voice became sharper.

"You think you're better than me because you married Marcus and inherited that building?""

Danielle said nothing.

Then Vanessa continued.

"You have everything. A husband who worships you. A beautiful daughter.

Money. Property. And now you want to leave me with nothing?""

Danielle answered calmly.

"I didn't take anything from you.""

"You took my future!""

A loud thud followed.

I flinched.

Whitmore glanced at me but didn't stop the recording.

Danielle's voice came again.

"Lower your voice. I'm not feeling well.""

"Then sign the papers.""

"No.""

"Danielle.""

"I said no.""

There was a pause.

Then Vanessa said something that made my blood run cold.

"If you don't sign, I'll tell Marcus what happened before Lily was born.""

I leaned forward.

"What happened before Lily was born?""

The recording continued.

Danielle sounded frightened now.

"Don't bring that into this.""

"Why not? You remember.""

"Vanessa, please.""

"You think I forgot?""

A metallic noise followed.

Then Danielle whispered:

"Get out.""

The recording ended abruptly.

Nobody spoke.

I stared at the laptop.

"Play that last part again.""

Daniel rewound the file.

We listened again.

I'll tell Marcus what happened before Lily was born.

I looked at Whitmore.

"What does she mean?""

He removed his glasses.

"I don't know.""

"Can we identify the date?""

Daniel checked the file information.

"The recording appears to have been created on the evening of Danielle's hospitalization. The metadata is consistent with the hospital incident timeline, but we'll need to verify the source.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"What happened before Lily was born?""

Whitmore opened his folder.

"Your wife's medical records may contain information relevant to that question.""

I stood.

"Then get them.""

"We'll make the request.""

I paced around the room.

My wife had been sick.

My sister had threatened her.

Someone had asked the hospital not to contact me.

And now there was a reference to something that happened before Lily's birth.

I felt as though every memory I had of my marriage was being pulled apart.

Then Daniel spoke.

"There's something else.""

I turned.

He pointed at the audio timeline.

"The recording doesn't end naturally.""

"What do you mean?""

"There's a small section of data after the apparent ending. It may be damaged or intentionally cut.""

Whitmore leaned forward.

"Can you recover it?""

"I'm trying.""

Daniel adjusted the software.

A few seconds later, faint audio emerged.

At first, it was only static.

Then I heard Vanessa.

Her voice was much quieter.

"Nobody can know.""

Danielle answered.

"Marcus deserves to know.""

Vanessa replied:

"If you tell him, I'll make sure he loses Lily.""

The audio stopped.

I stared at the screen.

My sister had threatened to take my daughter away from me.

Whitmore slowly closed the laptop.

"Marcus, we need to discuss protective measures for Lily.""

I nodded.

"Whatever it takes.""

At 4:15 p.m., my mother called.

"Marcus, where are you?""

"At the lawyer's office.""

"Have you spoken to Vanessa?""

"Yes.""

"Did she give you something?""

I froze.

"How do you know?""

My mother began crying.

"Oh, Marcus.""

I stood and walked toward the window.

"Mom, what happened before Lily was born?""

Silence.

Then a faint sob.

"Who told you?""

"Vanessa mentioned it. There's a recording.""

My mother made a choking sound.

"What did she say?""

"She threatened Danielle. She said she'd tell me something about before Lily was born.""

I heard my mother sit down.

For several seconds, she couldn't speak.

Then she said:

"Your wife came to me when she was seven months pregnant.""

My chest tightened.

"What happened?""

"She had discovered something.""

"What?""

My mother whispered:

"She discovered that Vanessa had been secretly contacting the doctor who treated her during pregnancy.""

I felt a chill run down my spine.

"Why?""

"I don't know everything. Danielle said Vanessa had asked for medical information without permission.""

I stared at the wall.

"About Lily?""

"Yes.""

"Why would she do that?""

My mother began crying harder.

"Because Vanessa believed she had a right to know something about the baby.""

I gripped the phone.

"What something?""

My mother took a shaky breath.

Then she said:

"Danielle told me that Vanessa had been trying to convince her that Lily wasn't really yours.""

I couldn't move.

The room seemed to tilt.

"What?""

"She said Vanessa had shown her some medical papers. Danielle told her they were meaningless, but Vanessa kept insisting there was something wrong.""

I closed my eyes.

Lily was my daughter.

I had been there when she was born.

I remembered holding her tiny hand in the hospital.

I remembered Danielle laughing through her tears when I promised to protect them both.

I had never questioned my daughter's parentage.

Not once.

"Mom, why didn't Danielle tell me?""

"She was afraid Vanessa would destroy your marriage.""

I felt sick.

"Did you believe her?""

"No. I told Danielle that Vanessa was lying.""

"Did Vanessa ever say anything to you?""

My mother hesitated.

"She told me that Danielle had a secret.""

"What secret?""

"I don't know.""

I heard another voice in the background.

A woman.

Then my mother whispered:

"Marcus, I have to go.""

"Mom, wait—"

She ended the call.

I stared at the phone.

Something was wrong.

I immediately called her back.

No answer.

I tried again.

Still nothing.

Then a message appeared.

It was from an unknown number.

Stop asking questions about the hospital. Vanessa isn't the only person who will lose everything if you keep digging.

I showed it to Whitmore.

His expression hardened.

"Save that message.""

I took a screenshot.

Then another message arrived.

This time, there was an attachment.

A photograph.

It showed my mother standing outside a hospital room.

The date was visible in the corner.

The same night Danielle died.

And beside my mother stood Vanessa.

But there was someone else in the photograph.

A man wearing a white medical coat.

I zoomed in.

The name badge was blurry, but I could make out the first name.

*Dr. Robert.*

I looked at Whitmore.

"Find out who he is.""

The lawyer nodded.

Daniel enlarged the image.

Then he stopped.

"Mr. Hale, look at the door.""

I leaned closer.

The photograph showed a hospital room number.

*417.*

I remembered that room.

It was the room where Danielle had been treated.

But there was something else.

A small whiteboard beside the door contained the patient's name.

Danielle Hale.

And beneath it, someone had written:

*AUTHORIZED FAMILY CONTACT: VANESSA HALE.*

I stared at the photograph.

My sister hadn't merely visited my wife.

She had somehow been listed as the authorized family contact.

"How is that possible?"" I whispered.

Whitmore studied the image.

"Someone must have provided the hospital with that authorization.""

I shook my head.

"I never signed anything.""

He nodded slowly.

"Then we need to find out who did.""

My phone rang again.

This time, it was my mother.

I answered immediately.

"Mom, are you okay?""

Her voice was barely audible.

"Marcus, listen to me. Don't trust the hospital report.""

"Why?""

"Because the report was changed.""

I stopped breathing.

"What do you mean?""

She began crying.

"Danielle wasn't supposed to be alone that night. I was there. I saw what happened.""

"Then tell me!""

My mother whispered:

"Vanessa wasn't the person who arrived first.""

I gripped the phone.

"Who was?""

There was a long silence.

Then my mother said a name I never expected to hear.

"Your father.""

I froze.

My father had been dead for eleven years.

And according to everything I'd been told, he had never even met Danielle.

I looked at Whitmore.

He was staring at me.

My mother continued.

"Marcus, there's something about your father's death that you don't know. And Danielle discovered it before she died.""

The call suddenly disconnected.

I stood motionless.

Then Whitmore reached across the table and turned the photograph toward me.

"Mr. Hale, I think we need to investigate your father's records as well.""

I looked at the picture again.

My dead father.

My sister.

My dying wife.

And a hospital room that someone had deliberately kept me away from.

For the first time, I understood that the truth wasn't simply hidden inside a safety deposit box.

May you like

It had been buried for years.

And my sister had been willing to let my daughter suffer to keep it there.
