Chapter 5: My Sister's Price for Silence

The following morning, I received a message from Vanessa.
It arrived at 7:16 a.m.
Marcus, we need to talk. You've embarrassed me enough. Mom is upset, and the family is asking questions. Come to my office at ten.
I stared at the message.
No apology.
No mention of Lily.
No concern about the fact that she'd made a seven-year-old cry.
Instead, she was worried about her reputation.
I typed a response.
I'll be there.
Then I called Attorney Whitmore.
He advised me not to discuss the trust or reveal what we had discovered.
"Let her speak first," he said.
"And preserve everything.""
I agreed.
At 9:50, I arrived at Vanessa's office in downtown Atlanta.
She owned a boutique event-management company called Vantage Events.
The office occupied the top floor of a modern glass building.
I'd helped her start the business seven years earlier.
I'd paid the deposit on her first office, introduced her to several clients, and even guaranteed her initial business loan.
She had once told me that without my help, she'd never have become successful.
Standing in her reception area, I wondered how much of that success had come from taking advantage of people who trusted her.
Her assistant, a young woman named Chloe, approached me.
"Mr. Hale, Ms. Vanessa is expecting you.""
I followed her into the office.
Vanessa stood behind a large glass desk.
She was wearing a cream-colored designer dress, gold bracelets, and the same diamond earrings she'd worn at the birthday celebration.
She didn't offer me a seat.
Instead, she looked at her watch.
"You're late.""
I glanced at the clock.
"Ten o'clock is in five minutes.""
She ignored me.
"Close the door.""
I did.
Vanessa walked around her desk and sat down.
"Marcus, I want to clear something up.""
I remained standing.
"Go ahead.""
She sighed dramatically.
"Your behavior yesterday was unacceptable.""
I stared at her.
"My behavior?""
"Yes. You made me look terrible in front of the entire family.""
"You screamed at Lily.""
"I corrected her.""
"You took a plate away from a hungry child.""
"Because she was reaching before she was supposed to!""
I leaned forward.
"Then why were other guests eating?""
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
"We've already discussed this.""
"No, we haven't.""
She picked up a glass of water.
"Look, I understand that you're still struggling after Danielle's death. But you can't keep using Lily as an excuse to attack everyone who disagrees with you.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"Don't bring my wife into this.""
Vanessa smiled faintly.
"Why? You bring her into everything.""
I stared at her.
Then she said something that made my blood turn cold.
"Danielle wasn't exactly perfect, Marcus.""
I took a slow breath.
"Be careful.""
Vanessa leaned back.
"She was secretive. Controlling. She made promises she never intended to keep.""
"What promises?""
Vanessa shrugged.
"Financial ones.""
I studied her face.
"How much money did Danielle promise you?""
She looked away for half a second.
"That's none of your business.""
"You're right. It isn't. But Lily's money is.""
Her expression changed.
"What are you talking about?""
I watched her carefully.
"Nothing.""
Vanessa put down her glass.
"Marcus, I know Mom has been talking to you.""
I said nothing.
"She doesn't understand how complicated things were between Danielle and me.""
"What things?""
"Family matters.""
"Try again.""
Vanessa stood.
"Danielle owed me money.""
"How much?""
"Two hundred and fifty thousand.""
I almost laughed.
"Why?""
"Because I helped her.""
"With what?""
"Her business. Her property. Her personal affairs.""
"Do you have receipts?""
Vanessa's face hardened.
"Are you interrogating me?""
"I'm asking a question.""
She walked toward the window.
"Your wife promised me that money. She said she'd take care of me.""
"Then why did you submit a forged authorization to access Lily's trust?""
Vanessa went completely still.
For the first time since I'd entered the office, she looked genuinely surprised.
She slowly turned.
"What did you just say?""
I held her gaze.
"Did you think nobody would notice?""
Her expression changed again.
Then she laughed.
It was a strange, nervous sound.
"Marcus, I have no idea what you're talking about.""
"Your application is in the lawyer's possession.""
She swallowed.
"You're making a serious accusation.""
"I'm stating a fact.""
She moved closer.
"Be very careful. You're grieving, and I don't think you understand what you're doing.""
I took a step back.
"That's interesting. You used almost the exact same words in an email to the trust administrator.""
Her face lost color.
I knew then that she understood.
I had seen the documents.
I had seen the emails.
And she was beginning to realize that the family secrets she'd controlled for months were slipping away.
"Who gave you those records?"" she demanded.
"That doesn't matter.""
"It matters to me.""
"Why?""
She looked toward the door.
Then back at me.
"Listen, Marcus. We can resolve this without lawyers.""
I folded my arms.
"How?""
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she opened a drawer and removed a thick envelope.
She placed it on the desk.
"There's money in here.""
I stared at it.
"What is it?""
"One hundred thousand dollars.""
I didn't move.
"Take it.""
I looked at her.
"Why would I take your money?""
"Because I want this situation to end.""
I stared at the envelope.
Then at my sister.
"You think you can buy my silence?""
She raised her voice.
"I'm trying to help you!""
"By giving me money?""
"Yes!""
I shook my head.
"Vanessa, you humiliated my daughter. You forged my signature. You tried to access her inheritance. And now you're offering me a hundred thousand dollars?""
Her voice dropped.
"Think about what you're doing. If you make this public, the family will be destroyed.""
I leaned toward her.
"The family wasn't destroyed when you made Lily cry?""
She said nothing.
"Was it destroyed when you told her that her grandmother would go to jail if she spoke?""
Vanessa's eyes widened.
I had never told her that I knew about Lily's threat.
Her lips parted.
Then she whispered, "That child doesn't understand what she heard.""
I felt something inside me break.
"Don't you dare blame her.""
Vanessa sat down.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then she looked up.
"Do you really want to know what happened at the hospital?""
My entire body went cold.
I stared at her.
"Tell me.""
She looked toward the glass door.
Then she leaned forward.
"Danielle called me that night.""
"Why?""
"She wanted to see me.""
"What did she want?""
Vanessa hesitated.
"She wanted to change something.""
"What?""
"Her will.""
I felt my stomach twist.
"Why?""
"Because she was angry with you.""
I stared at her.
"That's a lie.""
Vanessa shrugged.
"Believe whatever you want.""
"Did she ask the hospital not to contact me?""
She didn't answer.
"Vanessa.""
She picked up her glass.
"Things were complicated.""
I stepped closer.
"What happened that night?""
She looked at me.
For the first time, there was no arrogance in her eyes.
Only fear.
"I was trying to protect everyone.""
"From what?""
She looked down.
Then she whispered something that made my knees feel weak.
"Danielle wasn't supposed to die that night.""
The room became silent.
I stared at her.
"What does that mean?""
Vanessa quickly stood.
"I didn't say anything.""
"You just did.""
"Forget it.""
"Vanessa, what happened?""
She backed away.
"I want you to leave.""
I didn't move.
"Did you do something to my wife?""
Her face twisted.
"How dare you!""
"Then answer me!""
She grabbed her phone.
"Security!""
I turned toward the door.
But before I reached it, she spoke again.
"Marcus, you should be asking yourself why Danielle called me instead of you.""
I stopped.
She was breathing hard.
Then she added:
"Maybe your wife wasn't as innocent as you think.""
I turned around.
"Show me proof.""
Vanessa stared at me.
For several seconds, she seemed to be fighting with herself.
Then she opened her desk drawer and removed a small black USB drive.
She held it between two fingers.
"There's a recording.""
My heart pounded.
"What recording?""
"The last conversation Danielle and I had.""
"Where?""
"At the hospital.""
I stared at the USB drive.
"Give it to me.""
She shook her head.
"Not until you promise me something.""
"What?""
"You stop digging into the trust.""
I almost laughed.
"You want me to abandon my daughter's inheritance?""
"I want you to leave the past alone.""
"Then why are you so afraid of it?""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
It was the first time I'd ever seen her cry in front of me.
But I couldn't tell whether she was frightened, guilty, or simply angry that her control was disappearing.
She placed the USB drive on the desk.
"Take it.""
I reached for it.
Then she pulled it back.
"One more thing.""
"What?""
"Don't let Mom see what's on it.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
Vanessa's lips trembled.
"Because she already knows.""
I froze.
"What does Mom know?""
My sister closed her eyes.
May you like
Then she whispered:
"She knows who was supposed to be in that hospital room when Danielle died.""
