Chapter 6: The Man in the Gray Jacket

The photograph showed a man standing beside my father outside a hotel.

He was younger than I expected.

Late forties, maybe early fifties.

Dark hair.

Square jaw.

Gray jacket.

One hand tucked into his pocket.

The other resting on a leather folder.

At first, there was nothing remarkable about him.

Then I noticed my father’s expression.

He wasn’t looking at the camera.

He was looking at the man.

And he looked afraid.

I zoomed in until the image became grainy.

There.

A small hotel sign reflected in the glass behind them.

*Riverside Grand.*

Daniel stepped around the desk.

“Do you recognize him?””

“No.””

“Have you ever seen him before?””

I shook my head.

Detective Harper was still on speaker.

“His name may help.””

I opened Paige’s email again.

There was no name.

Only the photograph.

Then I saw a second attachment.

A scanned business card.

I opened it.

*Graham Vale Vale Financial Advisory Private Asset Recovery & Risk Management*

I stared at the title.

“Private asset recovery?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

He looked at the screen.

“That's not an ordinary financial consultant.””

“What does that mean?””

He reached for the keyboard on his desk and zoomed into the business card.

“I’ve heard of Vale.””

“From where?””

“He specializes in tracing money moved through complicated corporate structures.””

I looked at him.

“So why was Dad meeting him?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

That frightened me more than the answer might have.

Detective Harper said, “Mr. Cross, can you send us that photograph?””

Daniel nodded.

“I’ll forward it.””

I turned to the phone.

“Detective, Paige says it wasn’t my mother.””

“She may be right.””

I frowned.

“You don't sound convinced.””

“I’m not.””

“Why?””

“Because the evidence we have shows your mother had access to several accounts. That doesn’t mean she was the person controlling them.””

My mind raced.

“Then who was?””

“That’s what we’re trying to establish.””

I looked again at Graham Vale.

“Can you find him?””

“We’re already looking.””

“Is he alive?””

Another pause.

“Yes.””

My pulse jumped.

“Where?””

“We don't know yet.””

Daniel looked at his watch.

“Marlo, there’s something you need to understand. If Vale was working for your father, this may go beyond your family.””

“How?””

“He may have been investigating financial fraud.””

“Against my mother?””

“Possibly.””

I looked down at the photograph.

“Then why didn’t Dad tell me?””

Daniel’s voice softened.

“Because the more you know, the more dangerous the situation becomes.””

I let out a slow breath.

“That sentence would have been more useful three years ago.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

My phone buzzed.

Another message from Paige.

*Please don't trust the first story Daniel gives you. Ask him about the red ledger.*

I looked up sharply.

“What?””

Daniel noticed my face.

“What happened?””

I hesitated.

Then I read the message aloud.

“The red ledger.””

He went completely still.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Still.

“What is it?”” I asked.

“Where did she hear that?””

“Paige.””

“What exactly did she say?””

I showed him the screen.

Daniel stared at the message for several seconds.

Then he walked to a locked filing cabinet.

He took out a key.

Unlocked it.

Pulled open the bottom drawer.

My heart pounded.

Inside were folders.

Dozens of them.

He reached past several labeled files and removed a thin red book.

He placed it on the desk.

I stared.

“You had it?””

“For three years.””

“Why?””

“Your father gave it to me.””

“What's inside?””

“Transactions.””

I looked at the cover.

There was no title.

Just a faded red leather binding.

“Transactions for what?””

“Money your mother couldn’t explain.””

I reached for it.

Daniel put his hand over it.

“Before you open this, understand something.””

“What?””

“Your father never wanted this in your hands unless he was dead.””

I stared at him.

“He's dead.””

Daniel slowly removed his hand.

I opened the ledger.

The first pages were handwritten.

Dates.

Amounts.

Account numbers.

Initials.

Notes in my father’s handwriting.

Some entries had been crossed out.

Others circled.

The further I read, the less sense it made.

Then I saw my own name.

*M.B. — 08/14*

Beside it:

*Transfer initiated.*

Another line:

*Mother intercepted.*

My fingers went cold.

I turned the page.

There was another entry.

*M.B. — 09/02*

*Payment reversed without authorization.*

Then another.

*M.B. — 10/19*

*Secondary account activated.*

Daniel watched me read.

“How much did she take?””

“We don't know the full amount.””

I turned another page.

My father had written a total near the bottom.

I read it twice.

“Daniel.””

He didn’t answer.

I pointed to the number.

“Is this real?””

He nodded.

“Approximately four hundred eighty thousand dollars.””

I sat back.

“That much?””

“That’s only what your father traced.””

I looked at him.

“What happened to it?””

“Some went into accounts connected to Paige’s wedding.””

I swallowed.

“Some?””

“Yes.””

“Where did the rest go?””

Daniel looked at the ledger.

“That’s where Vale comes in.””

I felt a chill.

“What was he investigating?””

“The transfers that didn’t stop at your family.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

“Your mother may not have been the final recipient.””

The words hung in the air.

I closed the ledger.

“This is insane.””

“No,” Daniel said quietly.

“This is organized.””

My phone buzzed again.

This time, it was Paige calling.

I answered immediately.

“Where are you?””

“Home.””

“You sent me the picture of Graham Vale.””

“I know.””

“Who is he?””

“I don't know everything.””

“Then tell me what you do know.””

She hesitated.

“Mom knew him.””

My chest tightened.

“You said she didn’t take the money.””

“I said she didn’t take all of it.””

I closed my eyes.

“Paige, stop protecting everyone.””

“I’m not.””

“You are.””

“I’m trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

She took a breath.

“From Dad’s business partner.””

I froze.

“What business partner?””

“You've heard of him.””

“I haven't.””

“His name is Everett Shaw.””

I looked at Daniel.

His expression changed instantly.

“Daniel knows him,” Paige said.

I turned back toward him.

“How?””

Daniel slowly sat down.

“Everett was your father’s partner in a company called Northbridge Holdings.””

“I’ve never heard of it.””

“You weren't supposed to.””

Paige continued.

“Dad invested money there before you were born.””

“What happened to it?””

“It disappeared.””

“Into what?””

“I don't know.””

“Then how do you know Everett?””

“Because Mom blamed him for everything.””

My eyes narrowed.

“And Dad?””

“Dad didn't.””

“Why?””

Paige’s voice dropped.

“Because Dad believed Everett was trying to expose Mom.””

I looked at the red ledger.

Suddenly, the numbers didn’t seem random anymore.

The missing money.

The secret trust.

The hidden business account.

The $100,000 wedding payment.

The man in the gray jacket.

Maybe this wasn't simply a family betrayal.

Maybe my parents had been fighting over something much bigger.

“Paige,” I said, “where did you get that photograph?””

“I found it in Mom’s office.””

My blood ran cold.

“You broke into Mom’s office?””

“No.””

“Then how?””

“She gave me access.””

“Why?””

“She thinks I’m still on her side.””

I stared at nothing.

“You're not.””

“No.””

Her voice trembled.

“I haven't been for a long time.””

I gripped the phone.

“Why now?””

“Because I found Dad’s old phone.””

I stopped.

“What?””

“It was hidden in a box at Mom’s house.””

“Does it work?””

“Barely.””

“What's on it?””

“I haven't checked everything.””

“Paige.””

“There are videos.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“Of what?””

“I don't know.””

“You called me without watching them?””

“I watched one.””

My pulse quickened.

“What did you see?””

She was silent.

Then she said:

“Dad.””

I waited.

“He was sitting in this office.””

“Which office?””

“I don't know. Somewhere private.””

“What was he saying?””

Paige’s breathing became shaky.

“He said if you ever came looking for him, you shouldn't trust anyone in the family.””

I looked at Daniel.

His face had gone pale.

“Did he name anyone?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Paige didn’t answer.

“Paige.””

Her voice cracked.

“He named Everett.””

I turned toward Daniel.

“Why would Dad tell me not to trust him?””

Paige whispered:

“Because Everett wasn't his partner anymore.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He was blackmailing Dad.””

The room went silent.

“Over what?””

Paige hesitated.

Then she said:

“Over something that happened before you were born.””

My stomach tightened.

“What happened?””

“I don't know.””

“Paige, you called me. You started this.””

“I know.””

“Then tell me.””

“I can't.””

“Why?””

“Because the video ended before Dad explained.””

I felt my frustration spike.

“What did he say?””

“Just one thing.””

“What?””

“He said, ‘Marlo is the only person who can prove she did it.’”

My blood ran cold.

“Prove who did what?””

Paige began to cry.

“I don't know.””

I stood.

“Paige, listen to me carefully. Find that phone. Do not let Mom see it. Do not delete anything.””

“I won't.””

“And don't go anywhere alone.””

“Why?””

“Because if Dad was afraid of these people, we need to assume he was right.””

There was silence.

Then Paige whispered:

“Marlo?””

“What?””

“I think Mom knows I found the phone.””

My heart stopped.

“How?””

“I came home ten minutes ago.””

A sound came through the phone.

A door closing.

Paige gasped.

“Someone's here.””

“Paige?””

No answer.

“Paige!””

I heard hurried footsteps.

Then a man's voice, distant but unmistakable.

“Paige, your mother wants to speak with you.””

Her breathing stopped.

I looked at Daniel.

“That isn't Mom.””

He stood immediately.

“Hang up.””

“What?””

“Hang up now.””

I heard Paige whisper my name.

Then the call ended.

I stared at the dead screen.

Another message arrived almost immediately.

Not from Paige.

From the unknown number that had contacted me earlier.

*Marlo, do not go home.*

A second message followed.

*They know you have the ledger.*

May you like

Then a third.

*And the man in the gray jacket is already on his way to your house.*
