Chapter 8: The Man Behind The Secret
The words didn’t make sense.
Not at first.
They entered my mind, but they refused to connect.
*Someone Lily shares my blood with.*
I looked at Daniel.
Then at Lily.
Then back at Daniel.
“No.””
It was the only word I could find.
Daniel didn’t argue.
He just sat there, staring at his hands.
“Olivia…”
“No.””
My voice became sharper.
“You don’t get to drop something like that and just sit there.””
“I know.””
“Then explain.””
Lily was silent beside me.
Too silent.
That scared me more than anything.
She had spent the last few days discovering that everyone around her had hidden pieces of her life.
And now the person she trusted least was also the person holding the biggest secret.
Daniel took a deep breath.
“Before I met you, I worked with Rachel.””
I crossed my arms.
“You knew her.””
“Yes.””
“How well?””
His eyes moved toward the window.
“Well enough that I knew she was scared.””
“Scared of what?””
“The people she was investigating.””
I shook my head.
“You’re avoiding the question.””
“I know.””
“Were you involved?””
The question hung between us.
Daniel looked at me.
“Yes.””
Lily’s face changed.
“What?””
Daniel turned toward her.
“Not the way you think.””
“How am I supposed to think?””
Her voice cracked.
“You’ve lied to us this entire time.””
He nodded slowly.
“You’re right.””
The fact that he accepted it made it harder.
“I was working security for the company Rachel was investigating.””
I stared at him.
“You never told me that.””
“I left that part out.””
“Why?””
“Because I was ashamed.””
I almost laughed.
“After everything, that’s what you were ashamed of?””
Daniel looked down.
“I knew things were happening that I couldn’t stop.””
“What things?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Rachel discovered that certain people inside the organization were creating fake identities.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“To move money. To hide people. To erase records.””
My eyes moved to Lily.
“And her?””
Daniel nodded.
“Lily was one of the records they tried to erase.””
A chill ran through me.
“Why her?””
He was quiet.
Too quiet.
Then he said:
“Because of who her father was.””
Lily whispered:
“Who?””
Daniel looked at her.
And I saw pain in his eyes.
“Me.””
The car became completely silent.
I couldn’t hear the outside world anymore.
I couldn’t hear traffic.
Couldn’t hear the wind.
Only those two letters in my mind.
Me.
I stared at Daniel.
“What did you say?””
He swallowed.
“Lily is my biological daughter.””
Lily’s face went completely blank.
Like her brain couldn’t process the sentence.
Then she laughed.
A small, broken laugh.
“That’s not funny.””
“I know.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“That’s not possible.””
Daniel looked like he wanted to reach for her.
But he didn’t.
“I’m sorry.””
“Stop saying that.””
Her voice rose.
“Everybody keeps saying sorry after they destroy everything.””
She opened the car door.
I grabbed her hand.
“Lily.””
“No.””
She looked at me.
And the pain in her eyes nearly broke me.
“You knew I was adopted.””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
“You knew Dad knew Rachel.””
I nodded again.
“I didn’t know everything.””
“But you knew something.””
I couldn’t deny it.
She looked away.
“Everyone knew pieces of me except me.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because it was true.
For thirteen years, we had built our love around a secret.
We thought hiding the truth protected her.
But maybe we had only taught her that she couldn’t trust the people closest to her.
Daniel spoke quietly.
“I wanted to tell you.””
Lily looked at him.
“When?””
“I tried.””
“When?””
His voice broke.
“When you were younger.””
She stared at him.
“And?””
“And then someone started threatening us.””
She froze.
Daniel continued.
“The day I found out the adoption records were changed, I confronted the people responsible.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know all of them.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“I know.””
His eyes filled with regret.
“But one person was certain.””
“Who?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Margaret Greene.””
Even hearing her name made my skin crawl.
“What did she do?””
Daniel answered carefully.
“She wasn’t just involved in the adoption records.””
“Then what?””
“She was the person who helped hide Lily’s identity.””
I felt sick.
“Why would she do that?””
“Because she was protecting someone.””
“Who?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
But I already knew.
The unknown.
The missing piece.
The person everyone feared.
“Lily’s biological father,” I whispered.
Daniel nodded.
“No.””
Lily looked confused.
“But you just said you’re my biological father.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I am.””
“Then who are we afraid of?””
His face changed.
And that was when I understood.
The secret wasn’t just that Daniel was Lily’s father.
The secret was that someone else believed they had a claim over her.
Daniel reached into the folder.
He pulled out another document.
“This is what I found yesterday.””
He handed it to me.
I unfolded it.
It was a report.
A medical report.
My eyes moved down the page.
Then stopped.
The words blurred.
“What?””
Daniel watched me.
“Read the bottom.””
I did.
And my hands started shaking.
Because there was a name.
A name connected to Lily.
A name that shouldn’t exist.
A name that belonged to someone I thought was completely unrelated.
Margaret Greene.
I looked up.
“She’s not just a neighbor.””
“No.””
“She’s…”
Daniel nodded.
“Her grandmother.””
The world stopped.
“What?””
Lily stared.
“My grandmother?””
Daniel nodded.
“Your biological father’s mother.””
I couldn’t breathe.
All this time.
The woman next door.
The woman who watched Lily grow.
The woman who brought her birthday presents.
She wasn’t a stranger.
She was family.
But not the kind of family anyone would want.
Lily looked horrified.
“Why would my grandmother do this?””
Daniel looked at the ground.
“Because she believed she was protecting you.””
“By lying?””
“Yes.””
“By spying on me?””
“Yes.””
“By making Mom think something was wrong with me?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t have to.
Lily looked out the window.
“I hate this.””
I moved closer.
“Sweetheart…”
“No.””
She wiped her eyes.
“I don’t even know who I am anymore.””
Those words destroyed me.
Because no matter how dangerous the situation was, that was the deepest wound.
Not the threats.
Not the secrets.
Not the people chasing us.
It was the feeling that her own life had been stolen from her.
I pulled her into my arms.
And after a moment, she let me.
Just for a moment.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
We all froze.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“What?””
I watched him answer.
“Hello?””
Silence.
Then:
“You shouldn’t be calling me.””
His expression hardened.
“Where are you?””
Another pause.
Then Daniel stood up suddenly.
“What did you say?””
I looked at him.
“Who is it?””
He didn’t answer.
He listened.
Then his face went pale.
“Rachel.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
He lowered the phone.
“She found out where we are.””
“How?””
He looked toward the road.
“I don’t know.””
Then another sound came.
A car door closing.
All of us turned.
Across the parking lot.
A woman stood beside a dark sedan.
Older.
Tired.
Terrified.
But alive.
Rachel.
Lily stared at her.
The woman who gave birth to her.
The woman she was told disappeared.
Rachel slowly walked toward us.
And before anyone could speak, she stopped in front of Lily.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
Lily stepped back.
Rachel looked like the sight of her daughter standing there was breaking her heart.
“I know you don’t know me.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“But I have waited thirteen years to say this.””
She reached into her bag.
Pulled out an old photograph.
And handed it to Lily.
Lily looked down.
Then froze.
Because the picture showed a baby.
A newborn.
Held in Rachel’s arms.
And standing beside them was another person.
A person Lily recognized immediately.
Her face went pale.
Because beside Rachel and baby Lily was a younger version of Daniel.
But that wasn’t what shocked her.
It was the person holding the baby’s blanket.
The person smiling beside them.
The person who had spent thirteen years living next door.
Margaret Greene.
Rachel whispered:
“Your grandmother wasn’t the only one who knew the truth.””
She looked at Daniel.
“She was working for him.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“For who?””
Rachel turned toward the road.
And her voice dropped.
“For the man who has been trying to find Lily since the day she was born.””
A black car slowly entered the parking lot.
Rachel’s eyes filled with fear.
“He’s here.””
Daniel stepped in front of Lily.
“Who?””
Rachel looked at me.
Then at Lily.
And finally said the name that made Daniel go completely still.
“The man you have been running from…”
May you like
A pause.
“Is your father.””
