Chapter 3: The Truth We Buried

For five seconds, nobody moved.

Not me.

Not Lily.

Not Daniel.

The entire room seemed frozen around that tiny glowing screen beneath the bed.

Then Lily’s voice cracked.

“Mom?””

I wanted to answer.

I wanted to crawl out from under that bed and pull my daughter into my arms.

But fear held me there.

Not the fear of being caught.

The fear of realizing that whatever was happening was much bigger than a teenage daughter skipping school.

Someone knew I was there.

Someone knew I was listening.

And somehow, they knew before Lily did.

Slowly, I reached for my phone.

My hands shook so badly I almost dropped it.

The unknown number stared back at me.

No name.

No profile picture.

Nothing.

Just a message.

*You shouldn’t have listened.*

I stared at the words until they blurred.

Then another message appeared.

*Ask Daniel what happened on October 14th.*

My stomach dropped.

Because Daniel had gone silent.

And from above me, I heard him whisper:

“Olivia.””

I closed my eyes.

There was no point hiding anymore.

I slowly crawled out from underneath the bed.

The room changed instantly.

Lily stepped back like she had seen a ghost.

Her face turned pale.

“Mom…”

Daniel looked worse.

Not surprised.

Not angry.

Terrified.

That was the part I noticed most.

Daniel Carter had always been the kind of man who stayed calm during emergencies.

When Lily fell off her bike at age eight and broke her arm, he was the one who carried her inside while I panicked.

When our basement flooded during a storm, he was the one who grabbed a flashlight and went downstairs without hesitation.

But now?

He looked afraid.

“What are you doing here?”” Lily asked.

Her voice wasn’t accusing.

It was hurt.

And that somehow made it worse.

I swallowed.

“I wanted to know the truth.””

Daniel looked at the phone in my hand.

“You got a message.””

It wasn’t a question.

I nodded.

“Who is it?””

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

His jaw tightened.

“Show me.””

I handed him the phone.

The moment he read the message, all the color disappeared from his face.

“October 14th,” he whispered.

“What happened that day?”” I asked.

He looked at Lily.

Then at me.

“I was hoping you’d never have to know.””

My anger rose instantly.

“That is exactly the problem, Daniel. You don’t get to decide what I know anymore.””

Lily looked between us.

“Mom…”

I turned toward her.

“No. I need answers.””

She looked down.

And that hurt more than if she had yelled.

Because my daughter already knew.

She had been living with this secret.

I looked at Daniel.

“You left us.””

His eyes lowered.

“Yes.””

“You walked away from your family.””

“I know.””

“You made me think you just stopped loving us.””

His face tightened.

“I never stopped loving you.””

“Then why?””

The room went quiet.

Daniel walked toward the window and looked outside.

For a moment, he looked older than I remembered.

“I didn’t leave because I wanted to.””

I crossed my arms.

“That’s what you said before.””

“I know.””

“You always say you had no choice.””

“Because I didn’t.””

I almost laughed.

But something in his voice stopped me.

He wasn’t defending himself.

He was remembering.

“October 14th,” Daniel said quietly.

“That was the day I found out someone had been accessing my work files.””

I frowned.

“Your work files?””

“I was investigating financial fraud at the company I worked for.””

I stared at him.

“You never told me that.””

“Because I didn’t want you involved.””

“You should have told me.””

“Yes.””

His answer came immediately.

No excuses.

No argument.

Just yes.

That surprised me.

“I found evidence that someone inside the company was moving money through fake accounts,” Daniel continued.

“At first, I thought it was just a corporate crime.””

“And then?””

“Then I noticed something.””

He looked at Lily.

“They knew things about my family.””

A chill ran through me.

“What things?””

“Your schedule. Lily’s school activities. Our routines.””

My mouth went dry.

“You’re saying someone was watching us?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Lily hugged herself.

“I told you she wouldn’t believe us.””

I looked at my daughter.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because Dad told me not to.””

I turned toward Daniel.

“You told her not to tell me?””

“I told her not to tell anyone until I understood what was happening.””

“She’s thirteen years old!””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice broke.

“You left me alone trying to raise her. You let me think you abandoned us. And all this time she knew?””

Lily wiped her eyes.

“I didn’t know everything.””

I softened immediately.

Because she was still my child.

“I knew Dad was scared,” she whispered.

“Scared of what?””

She looked at Daniel.

He nodded slowly.

Then she answered.

“Someone was following him.””

I felt the room tilt.

“What?””

Lily took a shaky breath.

“The month before he left, Dad started checking the windows every night.””

I looked at Daniel.

“That’s not true.””

“It is.””

She looked at me.

“He thought I didn’t notice.””

My chest tightened.

I remembered that month.

The late nights.

The strange phone calls Daniel wouldn’t answer.

The way he started locking the doors twice.

I had thought our marriage was falling apart.

I thought he was hiding something from me.

I never imagined he was trying to protect us.

Daniel walked back toward us.

“There’s something else.””

I looked at him.

“Of course there is.””

He accepted the anger in my voice.

“I found out the person behind it had access to information only someone close to us would know.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“Someone close?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation terrified me more than anything.

“Daniel.””

He looked at Lily.

Then at me.

“I don’t know for sure.””

“But you have a suspicion.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he reached into his bag and pulled out a folder.

He placed it on Lily’s desk.

Inside were printed emails.

Photos.

Documents.

My hands went cold when I saw one of the pictures.

It was our house.

Taken from across the street.

Another photo.

Lily walking out of school.

Another.

Me leaving work.

My breathing became shallow.

“How long?””

Daniel looked away.

“Almost a year.””

“A year?””

My voice rose.

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I was trying to find proof.””

“You were trying to find proof while someone was watching our daughter?””

“I was trying to stop them from getting closer.””

“Closer?””

I looked at Lily.

“What does that mean?””

Neither of them answered.

And that silence told me everything.

I grabbed the folder.

“What happened on October 14th?””

Daniel stared at me.

“That was the day I realized they weren’t just watching.””

A cold feeling spread through my body.

“What did they do?””

He looked toward Lily.

“I received a message.””

“From who?””

“Someone who knew exactly where we lived.””

“What did it say?””

Daniel swallowed.

Then he said:

“It said, ‘If you don’t disappear, your daughter pays the price.’”

The room went completely silent.

Lily started crying.

I turned toward her.

“Oh my God.””

I moved to her instantly.

But before I could reach her, Daniel said something that stopped me.

“Olivia.””

I looked back.

“There’s one more thing.””

I hated those words.

Every terrible truth in my life seemed to begin with them.

“What?””

Daniel’s eyes moved to the folder.

“Someone has been helping them.””

My heart sank.

“What do you mean?””

“The person sending the messages couldn’t have known everything without an inside source.””

I stared at him.

“Someone close to us.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

A terrible thought entered my mind.

One I didn’t want to believe.

“Who?””

Daniel opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, his phone rang.

The sound echoed through the room.

He looked at the screen.

And his face changed.

“What?”” I demanded.

He didn’t respond.

“Daniel, who is calling?””

Slowly, he turned the phone toward me.

I saw the name.

And every piece of air left my lungs.

Because the person calling Daniel wasn’t a stranger.

It wasn’t someone from his company.

It wasn’t someone hiding in the shadows.

It was someone I trusted.

Someone who had been standing beside me this entire time.

May you like

The screen displayed one name:

*Mrs. Greene.*
