Chapter 9: The Original Order
Vale's words echoed through the basement.
"You were never supposed to join the Navy.""
I stared at him.
"What does that mean?""
He didn't answer.
Sarah stepped in front of me.
"Marcus, this is over.""
Vale laughed softly.
"Sarah. Still pretending you're one of the good ones?""
She stiffened.
"You don't know anything about me.""
"I know you reopened Robert Lawson's file.""
"And I know what you did.""
Vale's eyes moved to the envelope in my hand.
"You found the letters.""
"Yes.""
"Then you know enough to understand why Robert had to be stopped.""
My voice shook.
"Stopped?""
"Your father was investigating classified contracts.""
"Contracts?""
"Defense contracts.""
Thomas stepped forward.
"And you were stealing from them.""
Vale looked at him.
"You should have stayed dead.""
Thomas smiled bitterly.
"Didn't suit me.""
Vale's hand moved toward his jacket.
Sarah drew her weapon.
"Don't.""
Vale stopped.
I looked at him.
"Why me?""
He stared at me for several seconds.
Then he said something that made no sense.
"Because your father found your original enlistment order.""
I frowned.
"My enlistment order?""
"You were recruited under a special program.""
"No.""
"Yes.""
Sarah looked at him sharply.
"Marcus.""
He ignored her.
"Robert discovered that your name had been added to a classified recruitment list before you ever applied.""
My mouth went dry.
"Who added it?""
Vale looked at me.
"I did.""
Silence.
"Why?""
"Because you were qualified.""
"For what?""
He stepped closer.
"Intelligence work.""
I shook my head.
"I joined because I wanted to serve.""
"That's what you believed.""
"You're lying.""
"No.""
He pulled a document from his jacket.
"Your father found this.""
Sarah's face tightened.
"Don't give her that.""
Vale tossed it onto the floor.
I picked it up.
It was dated six months before I enlisted.
My name appeared at the top.
Underneath:
*Candidate: Rachel Anne Lawson*
*Recommended for covert intelligence placement.*
The signature belonged to Marcus Vale.
But the final approval wasn't his.
It was Dad's.
I stared.
"Why would Dad approve this?""
Vale smiled.
"Because he didn't.""
He pointed to the signature.
"That's the problem.""
I looked closer.
The signature was almost perfect.
But Dad's middle initial was wrong.
Robert Lawson never signed his name without the middle initial *J*.
This signature didn't have it.
It was forged.
I looked at Sarah.
"Someone forged Dad's approval.""
"Yes.""
"Who?""
Sarah's eyes met mine.
"We've suspected Victor Hale.""
"But why?""
Vale laughed.
"Because your father wasn't the only one investigating.""
I turned toward him.
"What does that mean?""
"Robert discovered that someone had been using military records to manipulate family members of high-value veterans.""
My stomach tightened.
"Family members?""
"People with access to information.""
I looked at my own file.
"You used me.""
"Initially.""
"What changed?""
"Robert.""
Vale's face hardened.
"He realized your recruitment was part of something bigger.""
"What?""
He looked at the envelope.
"Your father discovered that military contracts were being routed through shell companies connected to veterans' families.""
Arthur whispered, "Lawson Family Holdings.""
Vale nodded.
"Exactly.""
I felt sick.
"Mom's account.""
"Your mother wasn't the mastermind.""
I looked at him.
"Then who was?""
Vale said nothing.
Thomas stepped forward.
"Victor.""
Vale shook his head.
"Victor was a lawyer. He moved money.""
"Then who gave him the orders?""
Vale looked at me.
"Your father.""
My blood went cold.
"No.""
"He started the investigation.""
"That's not the same thing.""
"You're right.""
Vale's voice became quieter.
"He created the entire trap.""
I stared at him.
"Why?""
"To catch the people stealing from the military.""
Arthur shook his head.
"Robert would never involve his daughter.""
"He didn't.""
Vale pointed at me.
"Someone else did.""
Sarah suddenly looked toward the door.
"Marcus, where's Victor?""
Vale smiled.
"Exactly where he needs to be.""
A phone rang.
My phone.
Unknown number.
I answered.
"Hello?""
A man's voice came through.
"Rachel.""
My stomach dropped.
Victor Hale.
"Listen carefully.""
I said nothing.
"Your mother has been taken.""
My blood froze.
"What?""
"She is alive.""
"Where is she?""
"That depends on you.""
Sarah reached for my phone.
Victor continued.
"Bring the envelope to the Lawson house.""
I looked at Vale.
He wasn't smiling anymore.
Victor said, "Come alone.""
"Why?""
"Because there is one final document your father wanted you to see.""
"What document?""
A pause.
"Your original birth certificate.""
I froze.
"What?""
Victor's voice softened.
"Your father was not your biological father.""
The call ended.
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
Arthur stared at me.
"What did he say?""
I couldn't speak.
Thomas stepped closer.
"Rachel?""
I finally whispered.
"He said Dad wasn't my biological father.""
Nobody moved.
Then Sarah took the phone from my hand.
"He's manipulating you.""
I shook my head.
"Why would he choose that?""
"Because it hurts.""
I looked at the envelope.
The forged enlistment order.
The letters.
The money.
The poisoning.
Everything seemed connected.
But one question remained.
Why would my father risk everything for me if I wasn't biologically his?
Arthur walked toward me.
"Rachel.""
I looked at him.
"Did Dad ever tell you?""
He shook his head.
"No.""
"Did you know?""
"No.""
Thomas looked away.
I saw something in his expression.
"You knew.""
He didn't answer.
"Thomas.""
He closed his eyes.
"I suspected.""
"How?""
"Because I saw your mother's original medical records.""
My heart pounded.
"What did they say?""
He looked at me.
"Your mother was pregnant before she married Robert.""
The room went silent.
I shook my head.
"No.""
"Robert knew.""
"When?""
"Before he married her.""
"Then why did he marry her?""
Thomas's eyes softened.
"Because he loved her.""
I swallowed.
"And me?""
"He loved you too.""
A tear slipped down my cheek.
"Then why keep it secret?""
Thomas looked toward Arthur.
"Because your biological father was dangerous.""
My heart stopped.
"Who?""
Thomas didn't answer.
Arthur did.
"A military officer.""
I stared.
"Who?""
Arthur's face was pale.
"General Michael Lawson.""
I blinked.
"Lawson?""
"Robert's older brother.""
The world seemed to tilt.
"My uncle?""
Arthur nodded.
"He disappeared before you were born.""
I stared at him.
"But why would he be dangerous?""
Thomas reached into his coat.
He removed one final photograph.
It showed a young man who looked remarkably like Dad.
Same eyes.
Same jaw.
Same crooked smile.
On the back was a date.
The year before I was born.
And underneath:
*Michael knew about the program.*
I looked at Sarah.
"What program?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know.""
Vale finally spoke.
"The program that recruited you before you were born.""
I turned toward him.
"What?""
He looked at me with an expression I couldn't read.
"Your mother didn't meet Robert by accident.""
My heart pounded.
"Then how did they meet?""
"Because Robert was assigned to protect her.""
Thomas added quietly, "And Michael Lawson was assigned to watch her.""
I felt dizzy.
"My entire childhood...""
"Was built around a secret," Vale said.
Then he looked at the envelope in my hand.
"Your father spent the last twelve years trying to uncover who ordered your recruitment.""
"Who?""
Vale's eyes hardened.
"Someone who knew exactly who your biological father was.""
A crash came from above us.
Sarah raised her weapon.
Daniel shouted from the stairwell.
"Someone's coming!""
Vale looked toward the ceiling.
For the first time, genuine fear crossed his face.
"Victor.""
The lights flickered back on.
Then a gunshot thundered upstairs.
Arthur grabbed my shoulder.
"Rachel, run.""
We raced toward the exit.
But before I reached the stairs, my phone vibrated.
A text message appeared.
*FROM: MOM*
*Rachel, don't trust Victor.*
A second message arrived.
*Your father was right.*
Then a third.
*I know who your real father is.*
I stared at the screen.
May you like
And beneath those words came one final message.
*He's still alive.*
