Chapter 8: The Night My Grandfather Died
The coffee shop disappeared.
The voices around us faded.
The sound of cups touching plates, the quiet conversations from nearby tables, the music playing softly overhead—all of it vanished beneath one sentence.
*I was at your grandfather’s house.*
I stared at Daniel.
Waiting.
Waiting for him to take it back.
To laugh.
To tell me it sounded worse than it was.
To give me anything.
But he didn’t.
He just sat there.
Like a man who had finally reached the end of all his lies.
“When?”” I asked.
My voice sounded unfamiliar.
Daniel swallowed.
“The night he died.””
Ryan stood immediately.
“What?””
People turned toward us.
Daniel lowered his head.
“I didn’t hurt him.””
I looked at him.
“I didn’t ask that.””
That stopped him.
Because I wasn’t accusing him.
Not yet.
I needed facts.
Not emotions.
Not excuses.
Facts.
“Why were you there?””
Daniel looked at the table.
“My father sent me.””
The answer was so simple.
So terrifying.
“Your father sent you to my grandfather’s house the night he died?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Ryan stepped closer.
“Answer her.””
Daniel looked up.
“Because my father thought your grandfather had something.””
“The evidence.””
“Yes.””
I felt cold.
“My grandfather was dying, and your father sent you to steal from him?””
Daniel flinched.
“I didn’t know he was going to die.””
“But you knew you were there to take something.””
“Yes.””
The honesty almost made it worse.
I looked away.
For a moment, I saw my grandfather sitting in his study.
The same study where he had taught me about contracts.
The same room where he kept every important document.
The same room where Daniel had apparently stood.
“How did you get inside?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then:
“He let me in.””
I frowned.
“My grandfather let you in?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.
“Because he knew who I was.””
The room went silent.
“He knew about me before you introduced us.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“He did.””
My hands curled into fists.
“Then why didn’t he tell me?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because he was trying to protect you.””
I almost laughed.
Everyone kept using those words.
Protect you.
Protect you.
Protect you.
But nobody had protected me from marrying a man who had secrets.
“What happened that night?””
Daniel looked down.
“I went there to find the documents.””
“Did you?””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because your grandfather already knew why I was there.””
My breath caught.
“He knew?””
Daniel nodded.
“He had prepared for it.””
Of course he had.
My grandfather was always ten steps ahead.
“What did he say?””
Daniel looked like remembering it physically hurt.
“He asked me one question.””
“What question?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“He asked if I loved you.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
“What did you say?””
“I said yes.””
“And?””
“He asked me if I knew the difference between loving someone and wanting something from them.””
I looked down.
My grandfather had said almost the same thing to me.
Daniel continued.
“I didn’t answer.””
That hurt.
More than I wanted it to.
“Because you didn’t know?””
“Because I was ashamed.””
Silence.
Then Daniel pulled something from his wallet.
A folded piece of paper.
“I’ve kept this since that night.””
He placed it on the table.
I didn’t touch it.
“What is it?””
“Something your grandfather gave me.””
Ryan looked suspicious.
I carefully unfolded it.
My grandfather’s handwriting.
Again.
But this time, the words were written directly to Daniel.
*A person can make a mistake and still have a choice.*
I read further.
*Your family believes people are possessions. You have the opportunity to prove you are different.*
My throat tightened.
Then the final line:
*If you truly love Olivia, tell her the truth before someone else uses it against her.*
I looked at Daniel.
“You never told me.””
His face collapsed.
“I know.””
“Why?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Losing you.””
I stared at him.
“You were afraid of losing me, so you kept the truth that would make me leave?””
“Yes.””
A bitter smile crossed my face.
“That makes no sense.””
“No.””
He nodded.
“It doesn’t.””
For the first time, he wasn’t trying to justify himself.
He was just admitting it.
And somehow that made it harder.
My phone vibrated.
Another message.
Sarah.
I opened it.
*Did Daniel tell you what he found in the study?*
I looked at Daniel.
“What did you find?””
His expression changed.
“What?””
“In my grandfather’s study.””
Daniel froze.
Then looked away.
That was enough.
“You did find something.””
“I found a file.””
“What file?””
He hesitated.
“A file with names.””
“Whose names?””
Daniel looked at me.
“People connected to your grandfather’s investigation.””
“Was my name in it?””
“No.””
“Was yours?””
A pause.
“Yes.””
My heart sank.
“What did it say?””
Daniel rubbed his face.
“I don’t know everything. I only saw part of it.””
“Daniel.””
“It showed payments.””
“From who?””
He whispered:
“My father.””
The world seemed to tilt.
“Payments to who?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
I stood.
“Who?””
His eyes met mine.
And then he said:
“Your grandfather.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“My father had been paying someone inside Grant Holdings.””
“Who?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
“Then why was my grandfather’s name there?””
“Because the payments stopped after he found out.””
My mind raced.
My grandfather wasn’t just investigating the Whitmores.
He was investigating betrayal inside his own company.
“Did he know who it was?””
Daniel nodded.
“I think so.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
The frustration burned through me.
“Everyone knows something except me.””
Nobody spoke.
Because it was true.
My entire life had become a room where everyone else had a key.
Except me.
My phone rang.
Not a message.
A call.
Sarah Bennett.
I answered immediately.
“Sarah?””
Her voice sounded urgent.
“Olivia, listen carefully.””
“What happened?””
“You need to leave that coffee shop.””
I looked around.
“Why?””
“Because someone is following you.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“I saw the car outside.””
Ryan immediately looked toward the window.
Daniel stood.
“Who?””
Sarah ignored him.
“Olivia, do not go home.””
“Why?””
“Because they know you have the files.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“How?””
A pause.
Then Sarah said:
“Because someone inside your family told them.””
My eyes moved slowly.
To Daniel.
He looked confused.
Afraid.
But then Sarah spoke again.
And the next words changed everything.
“The person who betrayed your grandfather…”
I held my breath.
“…is still working for you.””
I looked at Daniel.
At Ryan.
At the door.
Then a black SUV stopped outside the coffee shop.
The passenger door opened.
And the person who stepped out was someone I never expected to see.
Someone wearing the same Whitmore family ring I had seen at my wedding.
May you like
Barbara’s ring.
My mother-in-law had found me.
