Chapter 9: The Mother Behind the Mask
I didn't sleep that night.
Vincent's final sentence played repeatedly in my mind.
Your mother is.
My mother.
The woman whose handwriting I had treasured.
The woman I had mourned for seven years.
The woman whose photograph I kept beside my bed.
Could she really be involved in all of this?
At 6:30 a.m., Alexander entered my room.
He was carrying two cups of coffee.
"How are you feeling?""
"Like I've been living inside someone else's nightmare.""
He placed one cup on the table.
"I understand.""
I looked at him.
"Do you?""
He sat down.
"Probably not as much as I should.""
I stared at the coffee.
"Vincent said my mother was dangerous.""
Alexander sighed.
"Your mother was many things. But she was never cruel.""
"Then why is everyone afraid of her?""
He rubbed his forehead.
"Because she knows the truth about the Moretti family.""
"What truth?""
He looked toward the window.
"Your mother discovered that Richard's original business partner had been murdered. The company was built on money stolen from legitimate investors.""
I listened carefully.
"Who was the partner?""
"His name was Daniel Reynolds.""
My stomach tightened.
"Reynolds?""
Alexander nodded.
"Sophia's father.""
I sat upright.
"You're saying Sophia's father was murdered?""
"Yes.""
"By whom?""
Alexander looked at me.
"That's what your mother spent years trying to prove.""
I stared at him.
"Then why would Sophia work with Vincent?""
"Because she believes Vincent knows where the evidence is.""
I shook my head.
"That doesn't explain Noah.""
Alexander looked down.
"Noah is not my biological son.""
I blinked.
"What?""
"His birth certificate was altered. I was told that Sophia had used my name to protect the child.""
I stared at him.
"Then whose son is he?""
Alexander closed his eyes.
"I don't know.""
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then he continued.
"But I know one thing. Your mother never wanted that boy harmed.""
A knock interrupted us.
Marcus entered.
"Mrs. Moretti, there's someone downstairs asking to see you.""
"Who?""
He hesitated.
"A woman.""
My heart began pounding.
"What's her name?""
"She says her name is Elizabeth Hayes.""
Alexander dropped his coffee.
The cup shattered against the floor.
He stood so quickly that the chair fell backward.
"Where is she?""
Marcus looked at him.
"She's waiting in the private entrance.""
Alexander's face had gone completely white.
"Claire.""
I turned toward him.
"Is that my mother?""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
I began crying before I could stop myself.
"Bring her here.""
Marcus left.
I wiped my cheeks with the back of my hand.
Then the door opened.
A woman entered.
She was thinner than I remembered.
Her dark hair was streaked with silver, and there were lines around her eyes that hadn't been there when I last saw her.
But I recognized her immediately.
The shape of her face.
The small scar near her chin.
The way she held her hands when she was nervous.
"Mom?""
She stopped.
For a moment, she simply stared at me.
Then she rushed forward.
"Oh, my darling.""
She wrapped her arms around me.
I buried my face against her shoulder.
She smelled like lavender.
The same lavender soap she used when I was a child.
I began sobbing.
"You're alive.""
She kissed my forehead.
"I'm so sorry.""
"Why didn't you come back?""
She held me tighter.
"Because I was afraid.""
"Of Vincent?""
She nodded.
"And of what I knew.""
I pulled away.
"Did you know he was making me sick?""
Her expression changed.
"What?""
I explained everything.
The tea.
The hospital.
The mysterious medication.
My mother's face turned pale.
"Oh, Claire.""
She reached for my hand.
"Did you drink it for long?""
"Eight months.""
She closed her eyes.
"Then he has been trying to weaken you.""
Alexander stepped forward.
"Elizabeth, tell her the truth.""
My mother looked at him.
Then at Richard.
Finally, she turned toward me.
"Vincent didn't start this alone.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Who helped him?""
She swallowed.
"Sophia.""
I shook my head.
"Why?""
"Because she believes the Moretti family stole her father's life.""
"Her father was murdered?""
My mother nodded.
"Daniel Reynolds was my closest friend. He discovered that Richard's original business partner was being forced out of the company.""
Richard looked down.
"I made mistakes.""
My mother turned toward him.
"Your mistakes cost Daniel his life.""
Richard closed his eyes.
She continued.
"After Daniel died, Sophia was sent away. I tried to protect her. I promised her father I would make sure she had a future.""
I stared at her.
"And she became Vincent's mistress?""
My mother shook her head.
"Not initially.""
She took a breath.
"Sophia and Vincent made an arrangement. She would help him gain access to the trust, and he would help her recover the evidence proving her father's murder.""
I looked toward the door.
"And Noah?""
My mother hesitated.
Then she said:
"Noah is the key to everything.""
Alexander stepped closer.
"Elizabeth, tell her.""
My mother looked at me.
"Vincent is not Noah's father.""
I felt a strange mixture of relief and confusion.
"Then who is?""
She looked toward Richard.
Richard's expression became devastated.
"He is my son.""
I stared.
"Your son?""
Richard nodded slowly.
"My youngest son. Vincent's half-brother.""
The room fell silent.
I thought about the little boy.
His blonde hair.
His blue eyes.
The way Sophia had brought him to the hospital and proudly called Vincent Daddy.
"Then why did the birth certificate say Alexander?""
My mother answered.
"Because Sophia needed to hide the child's identity from Vincent.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"Because Vincent had already threatened to eliminate anyone who could challenge his control of the trust.""
Richard sat down heavily.
"My youngest son was believed to have died in the fire.""
I stared at him.
"But he's alive?""
My mother nodded.
"And Sophia has been protecting him.""
I looked at Alexander.
"Then why is she helping Vincent?""
My mother reached inside her handbag.
She pulled out a small black flash drive.
"Because she has been playing both sides.""
She placed it on the table.
"Everything you need to understand is on this drive.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"Where did you get it?""
"My mother kept the original records," Elizabeth answered.
"I recovered them shortly before returning to Chicago.""
Alexander connected the drive to his laptop.
A folder appeared.
Inside were financial statements, photographs, audio recordings, and scanned legal documents.
He opened the first audio file.
A man's voice filled the room.
Vincent.
"Once Claire signs, the trust is mine. Richard won't interfere again.""
Then another voice.
Sophia.
"And what about the girl?""
Vincent replied.
"She won't be a problem.""
Sophia laughed softly.
"You're sure?""
"Her condition is already progressing.""
My stomach twisted.
Alexander paused the recording.
Nobody spoke.
I felt cold all over.
The recording continued.
Sophia asked, "And the child?""
Vincent answered:
"Once I have the trust, I'll make sure he never becomes an issue.""
Richard slammed his cane against the floor.
"That monster!""
My mother closed her eyes.
"There are more recordings.""
Alexander opened another file.
This one contained a conversation between Vincent and an unidentified man.
"She'll sign eventually," Vincent said.
"She's always been obedient.""
The other man laughed.
"And if she refuses?""
Vincent answered without hesitation.
"Then we use the medical report.""
Alexander stopped the recording.
He looked at me.
"Claire, we have enough to begin building a criminal case.""
I nodded slowly.
But something still bothered me.
I looked at my mother.
"Why did you wait seven years?""
She lowered her eyes.
"Because I was trying to find the original evidence. And because I was afraid Vincent would hurt you.""
"Did you know he would marry me?""
She shook her head.
"No. I found out six months after your wedding.""
My throat tightened.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
She began crying.
"Because by then, Vincent had threatened to expose Alexander and Richard. He told me that if I contacted you, he would destroy everyone you loved.""
I looked away.
I wanted to forgive her.
But seven years of silence couldn't disappear in a single conversation.
"Mom, I need time.""
She nodded.
"Of course.""
Then she reached into her handbag again.
This time, she removed a small photograph.
It showed a young man standing beside Sophia.
He looked almost exactly like Richard.
I recognized him from the family photographs.
Richard's youngest son.
My uncle.
The father of Noah.
But something was written on the back.
*If anything happens to me, the child belongs with Claire.*
I looked at my mother.
"Who wrote this?""
She whispered:
"Your aunt.""
I looked at Richard.
"Your missing daughter?""
He nodded.
"She found out what Vincent was planning.""
My mother took my hand.
"And she is still alive.""
Before I could respond, Marcus's radio crackled.
A security officer spoke urgently.
"Marcus, we have an emergency.""
Marcus lifted the radio.
"Go ahead.""
"Mr. Moretti has arrived with police officers and a court order.""
I frowned.
"What court order?""
Marcus looked at me.
"An emergency guardianship petition.""
My blood ran cold.
"What?""
He swallowed.
"Vincent is claiming you're mentally incapacitated and unable to make your own medical or financial decisions.""
I looked at the door.
Then my phone rang.
Vincent.
I answered.
"What do you want?""
His voice was almost cheerful.
"Good morning, Claire.""
I said nothing.
He continued.
"I've decided to make things easier for you.""
"By declaring me incompetent?""
A short laugh.
"Don't take it personally. You've had a difficult few days.""
I tightened my grip on the phone.
"You won't get my signature.""
"Perhaps not.""
He paused.
"But I don't need it anymore.""
My stomach dropped.
"What does that mean?""
His voice became cold.
"It means the court will appoint me to manage your affairs.""
Then he added:
"And when they discover your mother has been hiding evidence and your father has been using a false identity, they'll have plenty of questions for the entire family.""
The call ended.
I looked at Alexander.
Then at my mother.
For the first time since she returned, she looked genuinely terrified.
"Claire," she whispered.
I turned toward her.
"What?""
She took a shaky breath.
"There's one thing I never told you about Vincent.""
I waited.
She looked at the courtroom documents Marcus had just received.
Then she whispered:
"He's not trying to inherit the trust anymore.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
May you like
"He's trying to have you declared dead before the trial even begins.""
And outside my hospital room, Vincent was already speaking to the police.
