Chapter 2: The Question That Changed Everything
For three years, I had watched Eleanor Hale control every room she entered.
She didn’t need to raise her voice.
She didn’t need to threaten anyone.
People simply moved when she walked.
But I had never seen her look at someone the way she looked at Marcus.
Not anger.
Not disappointment.
Something colder.
A kind of silence that made even confident people afraid.
Marcus opened his mouth.
“Mom, it’s not what you think.””
Eleanor didn’t blink.
“Then explain it.””
His confidence disappeared.
The same man who had just told me our marriage was over suddenly looked like a child caught stealing from a locked drawer.
“It was a misunderstanding.””
“A misunderstanding?””
Her eyes moved back to my cheek.
“Your pregnant wife has a handprint on her face, and you’re calling it a misunderstanding?””
Marcus swallowed.
“Vivian and Claire had an argument.””
Eleanor looked at Vivian.
“Did you hit her?””
The lobby became completely silent.
Even the hotel staff nearby stopped pretending not to listen.
Vivian lifted her chin.
“She provoked me.””
Eleanor’s expression didn’t change.
“That was not my question.””
Vivian’s confidence faltered for half a second.
“Yes.””
The word hung in the air.
Eleanor closed her eyes briefly.
Then she looked at Marcus.
“You watched?””
Marcus shifted.
“I was trying to calm things down.””
“No.””
Her voice was quiet.
“But you weren’t.””
Marcus looked away.
That was when I realized something.
Eleanor wasn’t asking questions because she didn’t know what happened.
She already knew.
She was giving Marcus a chance to admit it himself.
And he was failing.
“Mom—”
“Did you defend Claire?””
Marcus hesitated.
That hesitation answered everything.
Eleanor’s jaw tightened.
“Did you?””
“No.””
The word barely left his mouth.
Something in Eleanor changed.
She looked at me.
Not at my clothes.
Not at my tears.
Not at the ring in my hand.
At me.
“Claire.””
My throat tightened.
“Yes?””
“Are you hurt anywhere else?””
I shook my head.
“I’m okay.””
Eleanor’s eyes dropped to my stomach.
“You’re seven months pregnant.””
I nodded.
She stepped closer.
“Are you sure?””
The strange thing was, that question almost broke me.
Because Marcus hadn’t asked.
Not once.
Not after Vivian slapped me.
Not after I nearly lost my balance.
Not after I told him I was carrying his child.
But Eleanor asked.
A woman who wasn’t even my mother cared more in ten seconds than my husband had in ten minutes.
“I think so,” I whispered.
Eleanor turned sharply.
“Get the hotel doctor.””
Marcus immediately stepped forward.
“Mom, that’s unnecessary.””
She looked at him.
“Unnecessary?””
“Yes. Claire is emotional right now.””
I stared at him.
Emotional.
That was the word he chose.
Eleanor’s face hardened.
“Your wife is pregnant, injured, and standing in a hotel lobby after discovering your affair.””
She took one step toward him.
“And you are worried she is emotional?””
Marcus said nothing.
A hotel employee hurried away to call the doctor.
Vivian crossed her arms.
“This is becoming dramatic.””
Everyone looked at her.
She continued.
“I understand that Claire is upset, but Marcus and I were already planning to explain everything.””
Eleanor slowly turned.
“You were planning to explain that you had an affair with a married man?””
Vivian’s lips tightened.
“I love him.””
Eleanor stared at her.
“That does not impress me.””
Vivian looked offended.
“You don’t know our relationship.””
“No.””
Eleanor’s eyes sharpened.
“But I know my son.””
The words hit Marcus harder than anything else.
He looked down.
I noticed.
For the first time that night, he looked ashamed.
But I didn’t know if it was because he hurt me.
Or because his mother had caught him.
Those were two very different things.
Eleanor reached into the leather folder she was holding.
My stomach twisted.
I thought maybe it was divorce papers.
Maybe Marcus had already prepared everything.
Maybe while I was decorating the nursery, he was planning my replacement.
But Eleanor pulled out a stack of documents.
She looked at Marcus.
“Did you sign these?””
His face changed.
“What?””
“Did you sign them?””
He didn’t answer.
Eleanor placed the papers against his chest.
“Read them.””
Marcus took them slowly.
“What are these?””
“Open them.””
He unfolded the first page.
I watched his eyes move across the paper.
Then stop.
His face went pale.
“What did you do?””
Eleanor’s voice remained calm.
“What I should have done months ago.””
My confusion grew.
“What are those?”” I asked.
Eleanor looked at me.
“Protection.””
“For what?””
She glanced at Marcus.
“For you.””
Marcus looked furious now.
“You went behind my back?””
Eleanor laughed once.
A cold, humorless sound.
“Behind your back?””
She stepped closer.
“You were sleeping with another woman behind your wife’s back for over a year, Marcus.””
The entire lobby seemed to hold its breath.
“You don’t get to lecture me about betrayal.””
Marcus gripped the papers.
“You had no right.””
“No right?””
Eleanor’s eyes flashed.
“I built the company you are currently destroying.””
That sentence made me look at her.
I knew Eleanor had founded Hale International before handing daily operations to Marcus.
But Marcus had always described it differently.
He said his father built the empire.
He said Eleanor was simply the person who managed paperwork after his father died.
Apparently, he had left out a few details.
Eleanor looked at me.
“Claire, there is something you need to know.””
Marcus immediately stepped forward.
“No.””
Eleanor ignored him.
“You are not leaving this marriage with nothing.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Marcus’s voice rose.
“Mom.””
“No.””
She turned toward him.
“You made your choice.””
“I’m not trying to hurt her.””
Eleanor looked at him.
“Then why is she standing here with your mistress while you tell her to leave?””
Marcus had no response.
Eleanor continued.
“When Claire married you, she signed a prenuptial agreement.””
I looked down.
“Yes.””
I remembered.
Marcus had said it was a standard document.
Nothing unusual.
Something his lawyers required.
“We all signed one,” I said quietly.
Eleanor nodded.
“Except yours was changed.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What?””
Marcus went completely still.
Eleanor looked at him.
“Tell her.””
Silence.
“Marcus.””
He didn’t speak.
My heart began pounding.
“What was changed?””
Eleanor looked at me.
“The agreement originally protected both of you.””
She paused.
“Six months after your wedding, Marcus added a new clause.””
I looked at him.
“What clause?””
His face was unreadable.
Eleanor answered.
“One that removed your financial protections if the marriage ended because of infidelity.””
I stared at Marcus.
“You changed the agreement?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“It was just a precaution.””
“A precaution?””
I felt cold.
“You were planning for divorce?””
“No.””
“Then why remove my protection?””
He looked away.
That was all the answer I needed.
Eleanor’s voice softened slightly.
“Claire, I have copies of every version of that agreement.””
She tapped the folder.
“And I also have records of every payment Marcus made to Vivian.””
Vivian’s face changed.
“What?””
Eleanor turned to her.
“Yes.””
The confidence disappeared from Vivian’s eyes.
“What payments?””
Eleanor opened another document.
“Apartment lease. Luxury purchases. Private travel.””
Marcus snapped.
“Mom.””
“No.””
Eleanor’s voice cut through the room.
“You don’t get to pretend this is love when you financed it with money that belonged to your family’s company.””
My eyes moved between them.
“What is she talking about?””
Marcus looked angry now.
Not guilty.
Angry.
“Mom, stop.””
Eleanor stared at him.
“Tell her.””
He didn’t.
“Tell your wife why Vivian’s apartment is under a company account.””
Vivian suddenly looked at Marcus.
“Marcus?””
He didn’t answer.
And for the first time that night, she looked afraid.
Not upset.
Not jealous.
Afraid.
I felt a strange shift.
A crack in the perfect image she had built.
She wasn’t standing beside the powerful man who chose her.
She was standing beside a man whose mother had just exposed him.
The doctor arrived moments later.
After a quick examination, he assured everyone the baby was okay.
I wanted to cry from relief.
But I didn’t.
I had already cried enough for one night.
When the doctor left, Eleanor placed a hand gently on my shoulder.
“You’re coming with me.””
I blinked.
“What?””
“To my house.””
I shook my head.
“I can’t.””
“Why?””
Because despite everything, a small part of me still wanted Marcus to say something.
Anything.
An apology.
A reason.
A sign that the man I married was still somewhere inside him.
But Marcus stood across the room.
Silent.
Watching.
So I looked at Eleanor.
“I don’t want to be a burden.””
Her expression softened.
“Claire.””
She lowered her voice.
“You have spent tonight believing you lost everything.””
She looked at Marcus.
“You haven’t.””
Marcus suddenly stepped forward.
“Mom, this is between Claire and me.””
Eleanor turned.
“No.””
Her voice was calm.
“This stopped being only between you and Claire the moment you brought another woman to meet me while your pregnant wife was standing here.””
Marcus’s face tightened.
“Are you choosing her over me?””
Eleanor stared at her son.
And then she said something I would never forget.
“I am choosing the truth over you.””
Marcus looked like she had slapped him.
A moment later, his phone rang.
He glanced down.
The color drained from his face.
I watched as he read the message.
Then another message appeared.
His hands started shaking.
Eleanor noticed.
“What is it?””
Marcus slowly lifted his eyes.
And for the first time all night…
He looked terrified.
“Dad’s lawyer,” he whispered.
My heart skipped.
Marcus’s father had been dead for five years.
Eleanor stepped closer.
“What did he send you?””
Marcus looked at the phone again.
Then at me.
Then at his mother.
“He says he found proof that I wasn’t the only one who betrayed Claire.””
The room went silent.
Eleanor’s expression changed.
“What do you mean?””
Marcus turned the phone around.
On the screen was a name.
A name that made Eleanor lose all color in her face.
Because it wasn’t Vivian’s.
May you like
It wasn’t Marcus’s.
It was mine.
