Chapter 7: The Letter My Mother Never Wanted Him To Touch
The silence after my question felt louder than any confession.
“Did you change my mother’s letter?””
Ryan stood completely still.
No denial.
No anger.
No accusation that I was being unfair.
Just silence.
And after everything that had happened, I finally understood something.
Silence was not always uncertainty.
Sometimes silence was an answer.
“Ryan.””
He looked at me.
His eyes were tired.
“I need to explain.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
His face tightened.
“Mai, please.””
“No.””
I pointed toward the house.
“You have explained everything except the truth.””
Tasha stood beside me, watching him carefully.
Nicole looked between us, confused.
“What letter?””
Nobody answered her.
Because suddenly, the letter wasn’t just a family secret.
It was the reason everything had started falling apart.
The necklace.
The money.
The lies.
All connected to a piece of paper my mother left behind.
Ryan took a step closer.
“I didn’t change the letter.””
I stared at him.
“Then why did someone send that message?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
He shook his head.
“I swear.””
I studied his face.
Years ago, I would have believed him immediately.
I would have searched for excuses.
I would have defended him.
But trust was not something that disappeared because of one bad moment.
It disappeared because of a thousand small ones.
“Then show me.””
Ryan looked confused.
“What?””
“The necklace.””
He hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
“Where is it?””
“Mai…”
“Where is my mother’s necklace?””
He looked toward Nicole.
And my stomach dropped.
“Why are you looking at her?””
Ryan’s face changed.
“I’m not.””
“Yes, you are.””
Nicole immediately stepped back.
“Don’t look at me.””
I looked at her.
“Why not?””
“Because you already decided I’m guilty.””
I stared.
“You tried to sell my necklace.””
“I was desperate.””
“You searched my mother’s things.””
“I was looking for information.””
“You wanted something that belonged to me.””
Nicole’s eyes filled with anger.
“You think you’re better than me.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I think I finally understand you.””
That hurt her.
I could tell.
But for years, she had mistaken my kindness for weakness.
That was over.
Ryan rubbed his face.
“The necklace is not with Nicole.””
I turned toward him.
“Then where is it?””
He didn’t answer.
“Ryan.””
“I put it somewhere safe.””
My heart sank.
“You took it?””
“No.””
“You removed my mother’s necklace from my possession.””
“I was protecting it.””
I laughed quietly.
The same word again.
Protecting.
Everyone used it when they wanted to control something.
“Where is it?””
He swallowed.
“At the bank.””
I froze.
“What?””
“A safety deposit box.””
I stared at him.
“You put my mother's necklace in a bank box?””
“Yes.””
“Without telling me?””
“Yes.””
I looked away.
Because somehow, that hurt more than I expected.
Not because he protected the necklace.
Because he had taken another choice away from me.
My mother’s final gift.
My decision.
My right.
“You had no right.””
“I know.””
The answer surprised me.
Ryan didn’t defend himself.
“I know.””
I looked at him.
“Then why?””
His eyes became distant.
“Because after your mother died, I saw how much that necklace meant to you.””
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
He nodded.
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“That someone would take it.””
I looked at Nicole.
Ryan followed my eyes.
And said nothing.
That was the confirmation I needed.
My mother had been afraid of the same thing.
Ryan knew.
And instead of telling me…
He hid everything.
I walked toward the front door.
“Where is the key?””
Ryan followed.
“Mai.””
“The key.””
He reached into his wallet.
Then stopped.
A strange expression crossed his face.
“What?””
He looked inside.
Then emptied his wallet onto the hood of his car.
A bank card.
Receipts.
His ID.
No key.
His face slowly changed.
“Ryan?””
He looked at Nicole.
She looked away.
My heart sank.
“Where is it?””
Ryan’s voice was quiet.
“Nicole.””
Nicole shook her head.
“No.””
“Where is the key?””
“I don’t have it.””
“Nicole.””
She crossed her arms.
“I said I don’t have it.””
Ryan stared at her.
“You were the only other person who knew.””
The driveway went silent.
I felt cold.
Not because I was surprised.
Because deep down, I already knew.
Nicole stepped forward.
“You’re blaming me again?””
“No.””
Ryan’s voice cracked.
“I’m asking you.””
She looked hurt.
“I didn’t take anything.””
I watched her carefully.
The anger.
The defensiveness.
The way she avoided eye contact.
Then my phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time, from the same unknown number.
*Ask Nicole where she was last Tuesday at 3:15 PM.*
I stared.
Tasha noticed.
“What does it say?””
I showed her.
Ryan saw it too.
He immediately looked at Nicole.
“What happened last Tuesday?””
Nicole’s face changed.
“Nothing.””
“Where were you?””
“At work.””
Ryan took out his phone.
“Your workplace closes at 2.””
She went quiet.
That was new.
Ryan noticed too.
“Nicole.””
She looked away.
“I had things to do.””
“What things?””
She didn’t answer.
I stepped forward.
“Tell us.””
Her eyes moved toward me.
“You’re enjoying this.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My voice softened.
“I’m trying to understand why everyone knew something about my mother’s necklace except me.””
That sentence broke something.
Not in me.
In her.
Nicole looked down.
“I didn’t mean for this to happen.””
Ryan stared.
“What does that mean?””
She wiped her eyes.
“I only wanted the money.””
My stomach dropped.
“You took the necklace?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
She hesitated.
“I took pictures.””
Ryan frowned.
“Pictures?””
“Of the documents.””
“What documents?””
“The ones inside the safety box paperwork.””
I looked at Ryan.
“What paperwork?””
He looked sick.
Nicole continued.
“I knew the necklace was valuable.””
She swallowed.
“But I didn’t know about the letter.””
I stepped closer.
“Who told you to look?””
She didn’t answer.
“Nicole.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
Then she whispered:
“Someone else.””
Ryan’s face changed.
“Who?””
She looked at me.
Not Ryan.
Me.
And I knew before she said the name.
Because there was only one person left who knew enough.
Only one person who could have sent the messages.
Only one person who knew about my mother’s warning.
“Your mother’s lawyer.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“My mother’s lawyer?””
Nicole nodded.
“He contacted me.””
Ryan looked shocked.
“Why would your mother’s lawyer contact her?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Nicole said:
“Because he said the letter was never meant for you.””
I felt my hands go cold.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“He said your mother left instructions.””
My heart pounded.
“What instructions?””
Nicole whispered:
“That you were not supposed to inherit the necklace until you knew the truth about your husband.””
I looked at Ryan.
He went pale.
For the first time since this nightmare began…
He looked genuinely afraid.
Not of losing money.
Not of losing control.
Of losing me.
“What truth?”” I asked.
Ryan didn’t answer.
Nicole did.
“Your mother didn’t trust him.””
The words cut through me.
I stared at Ryan.
My husband.
The man my mother trusted enough to protect me.
The man who claimed he was keeping secrets for my safety.
But maybe he wasn’t protecting me.
Maybe he was protecting himself.
Ryan stepped forward.
“Mai, listen to me.””
I didn’t move.
“Your mother was wrong.””
The sentence hit me.
Not because he said it.
Because he believed it.
“My mother was wrong?””
“Yes.””
“About what?””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
And then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
I watched him answer.
“Hello?””
A pause.
Then:
“What do you mean she found it?””
My blood ran cold.
Ryan looked at me.
The fear in his eyes was unmistakable.
The person on the other end spoke again.
Ryan whispered:
“No.””
May you like
Then he said the words that made my entire world collapse.
“Do not let Mai see that letter.””
