Chapter 2: The House That Was Never Theirs

At 11:47 a.m., I watched the locksmith’s van pull into the driveway.

For a moment, I just stood there behind the living room curtain, staring at the familiar street outside.

The same street where Ryan and I had carried boxes into this house three years earlier.

The same driveway where he had kissed my forehead and said, “I can’t wait until this place becomes our forever home.””

I used to believe him.

That was the part that hurt the most.

Not the coffee.

Not Nicole’s cold expression.

Not even the words, “Then get out.””

It was realizing that the man who once promised to build a life with me had quietly decided I was only valuable when I was useful.

A knock sounded at the front door.

I opened it.

A middle-aged man wearing a navy work shirt stood there with a toolbox in his hand.

“Mai Parker?””

“Yes.””

“I’m Daniel. Tasha called.””

Behind him, another car door slammed.

“Mai!””

I turned.

Tasha was walking toward the house carrying three empty cardboard boxes, her hair messy and her expression furious.

She didn’t even say hello first.

She looked at my arm.

The redness was still visible.

Her face changed instantly.

“Oh my God.””

“I’m okay.””

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“You don’t get to say you’re okay after someone throws boiling coffee at you.””

I looked away.

Because hearing someone else say it made everything feel more real.

Daniel cleared his throat gently.

“Should we start?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

Tasha looked at me carefully.

“Are you sure?””

I looked through the doorway.

At the living room.

At the photographs on the wall.

At the couch Ryan picked because he said it looked comfortable.

At the bookshelf filled with novels I bought and never had time to read.

Then I remembered him standing in the kitchen.

“Then get out.””

“Yes,” I said.

“I’m sure.””

Daniel walked inside.

“Before we change anything, I need to confirm something. Are you the homeowner?””

I shook my head.

“Both our names are on the house.””

He nodded.

“Okay. Then I’ll need your identification and proof of ownership before changing the locks.””

I handed him the documents I had already prepared.

Tasha stared at me.

“You planned this fast.””

“I didn’t plan this morning.””

I looked down.

“I planned for the day I finally stopped making excuses for him.””

She didn’t answer.

Because she knew.

She had watched me defend Ryan for years.

Every time he forgot an anniversary.

Every time Nicole borrowed money.

Every time he told me I was overreacting.

Tasha had always said the same thing.

“Mai, love shouldn’t make you disappear.””

I just never wanted to believe she was right.

While Daniel inspected the locks, Tasha and I started packing.

Not everything.

Only what mattered.

My mother’s jewelry box.

My passport.

My personal documents.

My laptop.

My photographs.

The things Ryan could never claim were his.

When I opened the bedroom closet, I saw my wedding dress hanging in the corner.

I froze.

Tasha noticed.

“You don’t have to take that.””

I reached toward the fabric.

The dress was beautiful.

Expensive.

Carefully chosen.

A symbol of a future that no longer existed.

“No,” I whispered.

“I’m taking it.””

She looked surprised.

“Why?””

I folded the dress carefully.

“Because I paid for half of it.””

A small smile appeared on her face.

“That’s my girl.””

For the first time all morning, I almost smiled.

Then my phone buzzed.

Ryan.

I stared at the screen.

Tasha looked over.

“Are you answering?””

I looked at his name.

The man who had thrown something at me.

The man who had threatened to remove me from my own home.

The man who thought I would still be waiting for his approval.

“No.””

The phone stopped ringing.

Ten seconds later, a message appeared.

*Ryan: We’re coming back at noon. Have everything ready.*

I read it twice.

Everything ready.

Like I was his employee.

Like my belongings were items on a delivery list.

Tasha saw my expression.

“What did he say?””

I handed her the phone.

She read the message.

Then she laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because she was shocked.

“He really thinks he’s coming here to collect things?””

I put my phone down.

“Yes.””

Tasha shook her head.

“He has no idea who he married.””

I looked at the empty boxes around us.

Actually, I wasn’t sure anymore.

Maybe Ryan had never known me.

Maybe I had spent years showing him only the parts of myself that were easy to love.

The forgiving parts.

The patient parts.

The parts that stayed quiet.

He had never met the woman who had to survive losing her mother.

The woman who rebuilt herself from nothing.

The woman who could stand alone.

At 12:05 p.m., Daniel finished with the locks.

“All set.””

I followed him outside.

The old key in my hand suddenly felt heavier than it should.

“Your old keys won’t work anymore,” he explained.

I nodded.

“Thank you.””

After he left, I stood in the driveway with Tasha.

The house looked exactly the same.

But everything had changed.

“Do you want me to stay?”” she asked.

I looked at the road.

“He’s coming back.””

“I know.””

“He’ll be angry.””

Tasha crossed her arms.

“Good.””

I looked at her.

She shrugged.

“Maybe he should finally experience what it feels like when someone else makes a decision.””

A car appeared at the end of the street.

My stomach tightened.

Ryan’s SUV.

And behind it, Nicole’s car.

Tasha stepped closer.

“Ready?””

I took a deep breath.

“Yes.””

The SUV stopped.

Ryan got out first.

He was wearing sunglasses, like this was just another normal afternoon.

Nicole stepped out behind him, holding her purse.

Neither of them looked worried.

That was what surprised me.

They truly believed nothing had changed.

Ryan walked toward the front door.

“Mai.””

I didn’t answer.

He looked irritated.

“Are you ignoring me now?””

Still nothing.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out his keys.

Then he stopped.

The key went into the lock.

He turned it.

Nothing happened.

His face changed.

“What did you do?””

I looked at him.

For the first time in years, I wasn’t afraid of his anger.

“I changed the locks.””

Nicole stepped forward.

“You what?””

I looked at her.

“The locks.””

She laughed.

“Are you serious?””

“Yes.””

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

“Open the door.””

“No.””

His eyes narrowed.

“Mai, don’t do this.””

I almost laughed.

“Don’t do what?””

He lowered his voice.

“You’re embarrassing yourself.””

I looked at him.

“Really?””

“Yes.””

He pointed toward the house.

“This is our home.””

I nodded.

“Exactly.””

The silence that followed was sharp.

Ryan looked confused.

Then angry.

“Give me the new key.””

“No.””

His expression hardened.

“You’re really going to make this difficult?””

I looked at Nicole.

Then back at him.

“You already did.””

Nicole stepped beside Ryan.

“You’re acting crazy.””

I smiled slightly.

“Am I?””

She looked uncomfortable for the first time.

“You’re overreacting because of one mistake.””

“One mistake?””

I touched my arm.

Ryan looked away.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

He remembered.

Nicole noticed too.

“Ryan didn’t mean to hurt you.””

I stared at her.

“You didn’t even stand up.””

Her lips parted.

“What?””

“You sat there.””

My voice became quieter.

“You watched.””

Nicole’s face changed.

Then she looked at Ryan.

“Are you going to let her talk to me like this?””

There it was.

The same pattern.

Nicole pulled.

Ryan followed.

He stepped forward.

“Mai, we’re not doing this outside.””

I crossed my arms.

“Actually, we are.””

His eyes moved around.

He noticed the boxes stacked near the garage.

His confusion grew.

“Where are my things?””

I looked at him.

“Inside.””

“Good. Open the door.””

“No.””

His face turned red.

“Then what do you mean?””

I stepped closer.

“Your things are inside.””

A pause.

“My things are gone.””

Ryan stared.

“What?””

“The things that belong to me are gone.””

Nicole looked toward the windows.

“What did you do?””

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because I wanted them to understand.

The house they came to empty was no longer waiting for them.

The rooms they planned to search were already cleared.

The things they planned to take were already protected.

Ryan’s voice became dangerous.

“Mai.””

I looked at him.

“Yes?””

“You better tell me where everything is.””

I heard another car approaching behind them.

A police vehicle.

Ryan turned.

His face changed.

“What is this?””

I looked at the officers stepping out.

Then I looked back at him.

“The part where you finally realize…”

May you like

I paused.

“…you should have been afraid of losing me before you decided to throw me away.””
