Chapter 8: Beneath the House
The engines outside roared louder.
Marcus tightened his grip around the small metal key.
Adrian moved toward the window.
“Three vehicles,” he said.
Darius looked through the curtain.
“Four.””
Daniel stood slowly.
His face had become strangely calm.
Marcus noticed.
“You're not surprised.””
Daniel looked at him.
“I've been expecting this night for years.””
“Then stop expecting and start explaining.””
Daniel gave him a tired look.
“There isn't enough time.””
“There never is.””
Another engine stopped outside.
A car door slammed.
Then another.
Footsteps spread around the cabin.
Adrian picked up the hard drive from the table.
“There's an entrance under the old Hale estate.””
Marcus nodded.
“I know.””
“No,” Adrian said.
“You know there is a vault.””
He pointed toward the key.
“You don't know what the vault was built to contain.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“What is it?””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“Evidence.””
“Evidence of what?””
“The network.””
Adrian shook his head.
“Not just the network.””
Marcus waited.
Adrian looked directly at him.
“Proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That your grandfather wasn't merely moving money.””
Marcus felt a chill.
“What else was he doing?””
Daniel answered.
“Creating identities.””
Marcus frowned.
“I don't understand.””
“People came to him when they wanted to disappear.””
Adrian added, “Or when they wanted someone else to disappear.””
The words settled heavily over the room.
Darius checked his phone.
“They're surrounding the property.””
Marcus looked toward the back door.
“Then we leave through the tunnel.””
Daniel shook his head.
“The tunnel exits too close to the road.””
Adrian pointed at the floor.
“There is another way.””
He crossed the cabin and lifted an old rug.
Beneath it was a square metal hatch.
Marcus stared.
“Another tunnel?””
Adrian nodded.
“This one goes directly beneath the Hale estate.””
Darius knelt and opened it.
Cold air rushed upward.
A ladder disappeared into darkness.
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“You knew about this too.””
“Yes.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“Of course you did.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Marcus.””
“No.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You don't get to tell me to trust you anymore.””
Daniel nodded.
“I know.””
A gunshot cracked in the distance.
The cabin windows rattled.
Darius dropped below the hatch.
“Move!””
Marcus went next.
Adrian followed.
Daniel came last.
The hatch closed above them just as another shot echoed outside.
They descended into darkness.
The passage was narrow.
Concrete walls pressed close on both sides.
Water dripped from the ceiling.
Their shoes splashed through shallow puddles.
Marcus moved quickly.
He could hear his own breathing.
Behind him, Daniel stumbled.
Marcus instinctively reached back.
Daniel caught his hand.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Daniel whispered, “Thank you.””
Marcus pulled away.
“Don't.””
Daniel nodded.
They kept moving.
After several minutes, the tunnel widened.
A rusted metal door appeared ahead.
Adrian reached it first.
He pressed his ear against the metal.
Nothing.
He opened it.
A stone staircase rose toward darkness.
Marcus recognized the architecture immediately.
He had seen these stairs before.
Not in real life.
In dreams.
Childhood dreams of being carried downstairs by Daniel while his mother screamed somewhere above.
He stopped.
Adrian looked back.
“What is it?””
Marcus touched the wall.
“I remember this.””
Daniel's face changed.
“You couldn't.””
“I do.””
“You were one.””
Marcus shook his head.
“I remember my mother crying.””
Daniel went pale.
Marcus looked at him.
“And you were carrying me.””
Daniel looked away.
Adrian closed his eyes.
Marcus understood.
“You both knew.””
Neither answered.
He climbed the rest of the stairs.
They emerged behind the old wine cellar beneath his house.
The place had been sealed for years.
Marcus remembered asking why.
Daniel had always said it was unsafe.
Now the lie was obvious.
He walked to the far wall.
There was a stone fireplace.
Adrian pointed.
“Behind it.””
Marcus pushed.
Nothing happened.
“Your grandfather designed it so only you could open it.””
Marcus frowned.
“How?””
Adrian looked at the key.
Marcus inserted it into a tiny hole hidden beneath the stone ledge.
He turned.
A heavy mechanical click echoed through the cellar.
The fireplace shifted.
A section of wall slid backward.
A dark opening appeared.
Marcus stared.
Beyond it was a staircase leading down.
Darius whispered, “That's the vault.””
They descended.
The temperature dropped with every step.
At the bottom was a circular chamber.
Steel doors covered three walls.
Shelves were packed with boxes.
Documents.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
Passports.
Names.
Hundreds of names.
Marcus walked slowly.
“This is an entire life factory.””
Adrian corrected him.
“An entire death factory.””
Marcus looked at him.
Adrian pointed toward the shelves.
“These aren't just false identities.””
He picked up a file.
“People disappeared.””
Marcus opened another.
A photograph of a woman.
An obituary.
Then a new name.
A new passport.
A new date of birth.
Marcus's stomach turned.
“How many?””
Daniel answered softly.
“Hundreds.””
Marcus turned toward him.
“And my grandfather ran this?””
“Yes.””
“You worked for him.””
“Yes.””
“Adrian did too.””
“Yes.””
“And Mom?””
Daniel nodded.
“Briefly.””
Marcus looked around.
“Then why was I different?””
Adrian's eyes settled on him.
“Because your grandfather wanted you to inherit it.””
Marcus went still.
“No.””
“He wanted a successor.””
Marcus stared at the shelves.
“My whole life…”
Daniel interrupted.
“Was never supposed to be yours.””
Marcus turned.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked at the steel vault door at the far end.
“Your grandfather believed power belonged to whoever controlled information.””
He stepped closer.
“He built everything around one principle.””
“What principle?””
Daniel's voice became barely audible.
“Everyone has a secret worth killing for.””
Marcus looked at the door.
“And mine?””
“Your existence.””
A sound echoed from above.
Metal scraping.
Someone had entered the house.
Darius checked his weapon.
Marcus glanced at him.
“You have a gun?””
Darius nodded.
“Always.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“You don't?””
Daniel gave a faint smile.
“I stopped carrying one eleven years ago.””
“Why?””
“Because I wanted to believe I was finished.””
Adrian looked toward the staircase.
“You weren't.””
A loud metallic crash sounded above them.
Then footsteps.
They were coming down.
Darius raised the gun.
“Back wall.””
They moved behind the central shelves.
Marcus held the key.
The footsteps descended slowly.
One set.
Then another.
Marcus's heart hammered.
Adrian whispered, “They're here.””
A figure appeared at the bottom of the stairs.
Victor Kane.
Marcus recognized him instantly from the old photograph.
Older now.
Broad shoulders.
Silver hair.
The same sharp eyes.
He looked at Marcus and smiled.
“Hello, son.””
Marcus froze.
Daniel lifted his head.
Victor's smile widened.
“You finally found the vault.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“You shouldn't have survived.””
Victor laughed.
“Neither should you.””
Darius raised the gun.
Victor's men appeared behind him.
Four weapons pointed into the room.
“Drop it,” Victor said.
Darius didn't.
Victor looked at Marcus.
“Tell your friend to lower the gun.””
Marcus stared at him.
“Are you my father?””
Victor smiled.
“Your mother always said you had my eyes.””
Marcus's chest tightened.
“Answer me.””
“Yes.””
The word echoed through the chamber.
Marcus closed his eyes.
For a moment, he couldn't move.
Then he opened them.
“Why did you abandon us?””
Victor tilted his head.
“Abandon?””
He laughed.
“Your mother took you away.””
“She said you were dangerous.””
“She was right.””
Marcus swallowed.
“Did you know Daniel raised me?””
Victor's eyes flicked toward Daniel.
“I arranged it.””
Daniel stepped forward.
Victor's expression hardened.
“You were supposed to keep him safe.””
“I did.””
“You failed.””
“You're the one who put him in danger.””
Victor shrugged.
“Perhaps.””
Marcus looked between them.
“This was all planned.””
“Yes,” Victor said.
“My marriage?””
“Yes.””
“The trust?””
“Yes.””
“Alicia?””
Victor smiled.
“She was useful.””
Marcus's face hardened.
“What did you promise her?””
“Money.””
“Did you kill anyone?””
Victor's smile disappeared.
“I've done things you aren't ready to hear about.””
Marcus stared.
“I want the truth.””
“You will have it.””
Victor pointed toward the vault door.
“Open that.””
Marcus looked at the steel door.
“Why?””
“Because everything you need to know is inside.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“Don't.””
Victor laughed.
“You still think you can protect him?””
Adrian looked at Marcus.
“The vault was built as a trap.””
Victor shook his head.
“No.””
Daniel spoke.
“He's right.””
Victor's expression changed.
Daniel continued.
“Your grandfather didn't create the vault to store evidence.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Then what is it?””
Daniel stared at Victor.
“It was created to expose the person who opened it.””
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
Adrian explained.
“The vault contains records designed to identify anyone who tries to access them.””
Marcus looked at the key.
“Then why does he want me to open it?””
Victor answered.
“Because I can't.””
Marcus stared at him.
“Why not?””
Victor smiled.
“Because the vault belongs to you.””
Silence.
Marcus looked down at the key.
Then at the door.
Then back at Victor.
“You need me.””
“Yes.””
“To open it.””
“Yes.””
“And once it's open?””
Victor's smile returned.
“You'll finally learn why your mother spent twelve years teaching you never to trust your father.””
A voice suddenly echoed from the staircase.
“Because he isn't the only father you have.””
Everyone turned.
Alicia stood at the bottom step.
Her hair was wet.
Her face was bruised.
And she was holding a small black handgun.
She pointed it directly at Victor.
Marcus stared at her.
“Alicia…”
She looked at him.
Tears filled her eyes.
Then she said the words that shattered the last piece of certainty Marcus had left.
“Victor is your biological father.””
She lowered the gun slightly.
“But Marcus…”
May you like
Her voice broke.
“Daniel is your biological brother.””
