Chapter 7: The Man at the Door

Marcus stared at the dark doorway.

The voice outside had been calm.

Almost gentle.

But the words had cut through him.

You've had my son long enough.

Daniel stood completely still.

Darius moved in front of Marcus.

“Stay behind me,” Darius whispered.

Marcus barely heard him.

“My son?””

The voice came again.

“Marcus.””

His heart stopped.

The stranger stepped into the cabin.

For a moment, the dim light revealed only a silhouette.

Then he moved forward.

Marcus saw the face.

He forgot how to breathe.

It was the man from the photograph.

Adrian Cross.

Older than the pictures.

Gray at the temples.

A thin scar ran beneath his left eye.

But the eyes were unmistakable.

The exact shape Marcus had seen in his own reflection for thirty-five years.

Marcus took one involuntary step forward.

“You're…”

Adrian looked at him.

“I'm Adrian.””

Daniel suddenly grabbed Marcus's shoulder.

“No.””

Adrian's expression hardened.

“Don't touch him.””

Daniel released him.

Marcus stared between the two men.

“You're alive.””

Adrian gave a faint, tired smile.

“For certain definitions of alive.””

Marcus shook his head.

“I don't understand.””

“You aren't supposed to yet.””

Adrian entered the cabin and shut the door behind him.

Darius raised a hand.

“Don't come any closer.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Darius.””

Darius froze.

“You know my name.””

“I've known your family for a long time.””

Darius's face tightened.

“Then you know why I'm here.””

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Why is everyone acting like you know each other?””

Nobody answered.

Marcus's voice rose.

“Enough!””

The three men turned toward him.

“I've been lied to my entire life.””

His voice shook.

“I buried one father. Another one just walked through that door. My mother disappeared.

My wife has been secretly working on some plan involving a twelve-million-dollar trust. And somehow all three of you knew pieces of it.””

He pointed at Adrian.

“So start talking.””

Adrian nodded.

“Fair.””

He pulled out a chair and sat.

Daniel remained standing.

Darius stayed near the door.

Adrian looked at Marcus.

“Your mother and I met when we were nineteen.””

Marcus said nothing.

“We were young. Stupid. In love.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

Adrian noticed.

“You know the rest.””

Daniel replied coldly, “He deserves the whole truth.””

Adrian nodded.

“I thought your mother was carrying my child.””

Marcus swallowed.

“She was.””

“Yes.””

He paused.

“She was pregnant when she married Daniel.””

Marcus's eyes moved toward Daniel.

Daniel said quietly, “I knew.””

Adrian continued.

“I went into business with your grandfather. That was my mistake.””

“What kind of business?””

“Real estate at first. Then financing.””

“And the network?””

Adrian's face darkened.

“They were using legitimate companies to move illegal money. Properties were purchased under false identities. Debts were fabricated. Ownership records were manipulated.””

Marcus looked at the hard drive on the table.

“And you found out.””

“I discovered enough to become a problem.””

“What happened to you?””

Adrian looked at Daniel.

“Your father saved me.””

Marcus stared.

“Daniel?””

“Yes.””

Daniel finally spoke.

“Adrian had evidence. They wanted the evidence destroyed and Adrian dead.””

“So you helped him fake his death?””

“Yes.””

Marcus shook his head.

“But everyone believed he died.””

“That was the point.””

Adrian looked down at his hands.

“I disappeared before they could find me.””

Marcus's voice softened.

“Why didn't you come back?””

Adrian's eyes lifted.

“Because I had one condition.””

“What?””

“I would stay away from you.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why?””

“Because they knew about you.””

“They knew I existed?””

“They knew you were my son.””

Marcus felt a pressure in his chest.

“So you stayed away to protect me.””

“Yes.””

“And my mother?””

“She wanted to come with me.””

Daniel looked away.

“She couldn't.””

Marcus turned sharply.

“Why?””

Daniel answered.

“Because your mother had already signed something.””

“What?””

“A transfer agreement.””

Marcus looked at Adrian.

“Your organization?””

“Not mine.””

Adrian leaned forward.

“Your grandfather's.””

Marcus looked confused.

“My grandfather made my mother sign over what?””

“The family properties.””

Marcus stared.

“Why?””

“Because he threatened to expose her.””

“Expose what?””

Adrian's voice became quieter.

“That you were not Daniel's biological son.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“That isn't exactly a secret anymore.””

“No,” Adrian said.

“But back then it was powerful.””

“What did he use it for?””

“He used it to control your mother.””

Marcus looked toward Daniel.

“And you?””

Daniel's face hardened.

“I was already involved.””

Marcus stared.

“In what?””

Daniel took a slow breath.

“I helped move money.””

Marcus went silent.

Adrian looked at Daniel.

“For six months.””

Daniel nodded.

“Then I tried to leave.””

“Too late,” Adrian said.

Marcus looked from one to the other.

“You both worked for them.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

The admission hurt more than Marcus expected.

“Then what changed?””

Daniel's eyes met his.

“You were born.””

Marcus said nothing.

“You were the first thing I ever did that wasn't about money or fear.””

Daniel's voice cracked.

“I wanted to get your mother and you out.””

Adrian added, “He did.””

Marcus looked at Adrian.

“And you?””

“I wanted to take you both away with me.””

“You didn't.””

“No.””

“Why?””

Adrian looked down.

“Because I believed disappearing would keep you alive.””

Marcus turned toward the window.

For the first time that night, the story started making sense.

Not all of it.

But enough to hurt.

He remembered Daniel's funeral.

His mother's empty stare.

How she had refused to cry until everyone left.

How she had told Marcus, “Your father loved you.””

Maybe she had meant Adrian.

Maybe she had meant both.

Marcus turned back.

“What about Alicia?””

Adrian's expression changed.

“That is where things get dangerous.””

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

“Tell me.””

“Alicia was approached three years ago.””

“By your people?””

“By one of the people from the old network.””

“Who?””

Adrian hesitated.

“Victor Kane.””

Daniel's face went pale.

Marcus noticed immediately.

“You know him.””

Daniel nodded.

“Victor handled the offshore accounts.””

Adrian continued.

“He disappeared after the collapse.””

“And Alicia?””

“She was offered money to marry you.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

The truth still felt impossible.

“How much?””

“Enough to change her life.””

Marcus laughed quietly.

“So every year with me had a price.””

Adrian's eyes softened.

“Not every year.””

“What does that mean?””

“Alicia changed.””

Marcus looked at him.

“When?””

“About eighteen months ago.””

Marcus remembered.

That was when Alicia had started acting differently.

More distant.

More secretive.

More protective of her phone.

Adrian continued.

“She discovered Victor wasn't interested in the trust alone.””

“What did he want?””

“Something your father left behind.””

Marcus looked at the hard drive.

“The evidence.””

Adrian shook his head.

“No.””

Marcus frowned.

“Then what?””

Adrian pointed toward Marcus.

“You.””

Marcus felt a chill crawl up his spine.

“Me?””

“You are the final key.””

“To what?””

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he reached into his coat and removed a small envelope.

He held it out.

Marcus took it.

His name was written across the front in his mother's handwriting.

He opened it.

One sheet of paper.

Only three sentences.

*Marcus,*

*If Adrian ever comes back, do not believe him until you ask him why Daniel had to raise you instead of him.*

*And never tell either man where you keep the original key.*

Marcus read it twice.

Then looked at Adrian.

“What original key?””

Adrian's face changed.

“Your mother wrote this?””

Marcus nodded.

Adrian stood.

“Where is the key?””

Marcus's hand went instinctively toward his pocket.

The small metal key from the box was still there.

Adrian saw the movement.

His expression turned grim.

“You have it.””

“Yes.””

“Give it to me.””

“No.””

Daniel stepped toward them.

“Marcus, don't.””

Marcus backed away.

“Why?””

Adrian said, “Because if Victor gets that key, people will die.””

“What does it unlock?””

“A vault.””

“Where?””

Adrian looked at Daniel.

Daniel answered.

“Under the Hale estate.””

Marcus's eyes widened.

“My house?””

“Yes.””

Adrian took a step closer.

“Your grandfather built it beneath the original property before the house was sold.””

Marcus suddenly remembered the childhood stories.

His grandfather had always forbidden him from entering the old cellar.

Daniel had said it was unsafe.

Marcus looked at him.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

“You knew there was a vault underneath my house.””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me.””

“I was protecting you.””

Marcus's voice broke.

“That's what all of you say.””

Silence.

Then Darius's phone rang.

He checked the screen.

His face changed.

“It's Alicia.””

Marcus's entire body stiffened.

“Answer it.””

Darius did.

Alicia's voice came through.

“Darius?””

“Yes.””

“Is Marcus with you?””

Darius looked at Marcus.

“Yes.””

Alicia inhaled sharply.

“Put him on.””

Darius handed over the phone.

Marcus pressed it to his ear.

“Alicia.””

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then:

“Marcus, I need you to listen.””

“You lied to me.””

“I know.””

“You married me for a trust.””

“I married you because I was ordered to.””

His throat tightened.

“And then?””

Her voice cracked.

“Then I fell in love with you.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

He wanted to believe her.

That was the worst part.

“I don't know what's true anymore.””

“You should.””

“How?””

“Ask Daniel who gave him the order to marry my mother.””

Marcus opened his eyes.

“What?””

Alicia continued.

“Your father didn't just marry your mother to protect her.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Alicia, stop.””

She ignored him.

“He married her because the network needed someone inside the family.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“Is that true?””

Daniel said nothing.

Marcus's chest tightened.

“Alicia, where are you?””

“Cedar Lane.””

“I'm coming.””

“No.””

“I'm coming.””

Her breathing became shaky.

“Marcus, don't come here alone.””

“Why?””

“Because Victor is here.””

Marcus went cold.

Adrian's expression hardened.

“Put her on speaker.””

Marcus did.

Alicia's voice filled the cabin.

“He has the original documents.””

Adrian asked, “Where?””

“In the cellar.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Has he found the key?””

“Yes.””

Marcus looked down.

The metal key was still in his hand.

Alicia spoke quickly.

“Marcus, listen to me. Victor thinks the key opens the trust documents.””

“What does it really open?””

Silence.

Then Alicia whispered:

“Your grandfather's vault.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

Daniel's face had gone completely white.

Alicia continued.

“And Marcus…”

“Yes?””

“There is something inside that vault that neither Adrian nor Daniel has ever seen.””

“What?””

Her voice trembled.

“The original birth record.””

Marcus's breath caught.

“Why does that matter?””

Alicia swallowed.

“Because your father's name on it isn't Adrian.””

Marcus stared.

Adrian suddenly looked alarmed.

Daniel stepped backward.

“What name is on it?”” Marcus demanded.

Alicia was silent for so long that Marcus thought the call had dropped.

Then she whispered:

“Victor Kane.””

The phone went dead.

Nobody moved.

Marcus stared at Adrian.

Adrian's face had lost all color.

Daniel slowly sank into a chair.

Darius whispered, “That's impossible.””

Marcus looked at the three men around him.

For the first time that night, he understood why everyone had been afraid of the same secret.

His entire life had been built around a lie.

But the truth waiting beneath his family's house could destroy more than his marriage.

It could prove that the man hunting them…

was his biological father.

And somewhere outside the cabin, an engine roared to life.

Then another.

Adrian looked toward the door.

“They found us.””

Marcus gripped the key.

“Then we're going to the vault.””

Adrian shook his head.

“No.””

Marcus stared at him.

Adrian's voice dropped to a whisper.

“Because Victor doesn't want you dead, Marcus.””

May you like

He looked toward the darkness outside.

“He wants you to open it for him.””
