Chapter 5: The Person He Had Already Chosen
For a moment, I couldn't understand the words on Claire's phone.
I read them once.
Then again.
Then a third time, because my brain refused to accept that the life I had been living for twenty-six years could be altered by a document filed while I was standing in a storage unit holding evidence of my husband's lies.
“Guardianship petition,” I whispered.
Claire nodded.
“He filed it tonight.””
“On what grounds?””
She looked at me carefully.
“Cognitive impairment. Inability to manage finances. Suspected decline in judgment.””
I laughed.
It came out thin and breathless.
“He made the decline.””
Claire didn't answer.
She didn't have to.
Renwick stood ten feet away with his phone hanging loosely in his hand.
I turned toward him.
“You filed against me.””
“Mara—”
“You filed against your wife.””
“I had no choice.””
“No choice?””
“You weren't well.””
I stepped forward.
“I wasn't well because of you.””
He looked at Claire.
“This is what happens when she gets frightened. She becomes obsessive.””
Claire's expression hardened.
“Keep talking, Renwick.””
His eyes snapped toward her.
“Don't threaten me.””
“I'm not.””
She held up the camera.
“I'm documenting you.””
He laughed.
“You think a video changes anything?””
“No.””
She looked directly at me.
“Documents do.””
Something in her voice gave me strength.
I tightened my grip around the blue folder.
“What happens now?””
Claire answered immediately.
“We get somewhere safe.””
Renwick moved toward the doorway.
“No.””
I stopped.
He looked at me.
“You're not leaving with her.””
“Why?””
“Because she's been manipulating you.””
Claire shook her head.
“He's scared.””
“Of what?””
“Of losing control.””
Renwick's face hardened.
“You don't know what you're saying.””
“I know exactly what I'm saying.””
He looked at me again.
“Mara, come home with me.””
That sentence almost broke me.
Not because I wanted to go.
Because once, that sentence had meant safety.
Home.
A place we had built together.
A kitchen where we'd danced while waiting for pasta to boil.
A hallway where he had kissed my forehead before work.
A bedroom where, for years, I had fallen asleep beside the same man.
Now the word home sounded like a locked room.
I shook my head.
“No.””
His expression collapsed.
“Mara.””
“No.””
“Please.””
“You don't get to say please.””
“I love you.””
“You poisoned me.””
“I didn't poison you.””
“You drugged me.””
“I gave you medication.””
“Without telling me.””
“You wouldn't have taken it.””
I stared at him.
There it was.
The truth hiding inside the excuse.
“You knew I would refuse.””
He didn't answer.
Claire touched my arm.
“Come on.””
We started walking.
Behind us, Renwick said, “If you leave tonight, the petition goes through uncontested.””
I stopped.
He continued.
“You don't understand how this works.””
I turned slowly.
“Then explain it.””
His voice steadied.
“Once the court believes you're unstable, they can appoint an emergency guardian.””
“Who?””
He didn't answer.
I already knew.
“You.””
He nodded.
“Or someone I recommend.””
I stared at him.
“You planned this.””
“I prepared for the possibility.””
“How long?””
His silence answered.
“How long, Renwick?””
“Months.””
Claire whispered, “He's lying.””
I looked at her.
“How long?””
“Years,” she said.
I felt sick.
Renwick rubbed his forehead.
“You've had six months of symptoms. I couldn't stand there and do nothing.””
“While forging my signature?””
“That was different.””
“While moving my money?””
“I was protecting it.””
“While putting sedatives in my food?””
“I was keeping you calm.””
Every answer sounded reasonable when he said it.
That was the terrifying part.
He had practiced them.
Then he said something that made me understand the final piece.
“You always trusted me to handle difficult things.””
“Yes.””
“And you still do.””
“No.””
He stared at me.
The silence between us was absolute.
Then he said, very quietly, “That's unfortunate.””
A chill moved through me.
Claire grabbed my hand.
“Now.””
We left the storage building.
My sister's car was waiting near the gate.
Lena jumped out before we even reached it.
She ran toward me.
“Mara!””
I had barely stepped forward before she wrapped both arms around me.
“What happened?””
I couldn't speak.
She pulled back and looked at my face.
“Oh my God.””
Claire came around the car.
Lena stared at her.
“Who is she?””
“I'll explain,” I said.
Renwick came out of the building.
Lena saw him.
Her expression changed instantly.
She stepped in front of me.
“What did you do to my sister?””
Renwick stopped.
“Lena, this isn't what you think.””
She laughed.
“It's never what I think, is it?””
“Mara isn't thinking clearly.””
Lena turned toward me.
“Is that what he told you?””
I nodded.
“Every day.””
Her eyes filled.
Then she looked at Renwick.
“You're unbelievable.””
He lowered his voice.
“You don't know what she's been dealing with.””
“I know what she wasn't dealing with until you started helping.””
He looked past her.
“Mara, come home.””
Lena stepped closer to him.
“She said no.””
His eyes narrowed.
“Stay out of this.””
“She is my sister.””
“And I'm her husband.””
“Not anymore.””
The words landed hard.
Renwick stared at Lena.
Then at me.
He seemed to realize that whatever had existed between us before tonight was gone.
He got into his car.
Before closing the door, he rolled down the window.
“You'll regret this.””
Lena walked toward the car.
“Is that a threat?””
He looked directly at me.
“No.””
Then he drove away.
We watched his taillights disappear.
Claire exhaled.
“He'll move fast now.””
Lena looked at her.
“Start explaining.””
Claire nodded.
“Your sister needs a lawyer tonight.””
We drove to Lena's house.
She gave me the guest room.
Claire sat across from us at the kitchen table while rain hammered against the windows.
I put the blue folder in front of Lena.
“Everything is in there.””
Lena opened it.
Her face changed page by page.
Bank transfers.
Forged signatures.
Medical documents.
The guardianship petition.
She reached the toxicology report.
“What is this?””
Claire answered.
“Evidence.””
Lena looked at me.
“Did he really put something in your food?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you tell me sooner?””
“Because I didn't know.””
She looked down.
“I should have seen it.””
“No.””
“Six months.””
“I thought it was stress.””
Claire leaned forward.
“That's exactly how he wanted you to explain it.””
Lena looked at her.
“How do you know so much?””
Claire went quiet.
Then she reached into her bag and pulled out another photograph.
She put it on the table.
A woman stood beside Renwick.
She was younger.
Dark-haired.
Smiling.
I stared at her face.
“Elise.””
Claire nodded.
“This was taken three months before she disappeared.””
I looked at Renwick's face in the photograph.
He was smiling the way he had smiled at our wedding.
The way he had smiled at me when he brought me soup.
The same hand around Elise's waist.
The same wedding ring.
I turned the photograph over.
Something was written on the back.
*Lakeview, October 14.*
I looked at Claire.
“Where was this taken?””
“Outside a rehabilitation clinic.””
“Why was she there?””
Claire hesitated.
“She'd been recovering from the same symptoms you have.””
My fingers tightened around the photograph.
“So he did this to her too.””
Claire nodded.
“Or someone working with him did.””
“Someone?””
She looked at Lena.
“I don't think Renwick has done all of this alone.””
My stomach dropped.
“What do you mean?””
Claire took out her phone.
“I found an email account he used years ago.””
She opened a screenshot.
There were messages between Renwick and someone whose name had been partially hidden.
One line was visible.
*The first stage is complete. She is beginning to question her own memory.*
I stared at the screen.
Then another message.
*Proceed with the medical narrative.*
And another.
*Once the court accepts the petition, the assets can be moved without resistance.*
I looked up.
“Who is this?””
Claire shook her head.
“I don't know.””
Lena looked at the date.
“That's from eleven years ago.””
My breath caught.
Eleven years.
Renwick had been planning this before I ever noticed anything.
Then Claire opened another message.
This one was much newer.
Only three days old.
*Mara is becoming suspicious.*
The reply came from the same hidden account.
*Then accelerate.*
My heart began pounding.
“Accelerate what?””
Claire scrolled.
The next message made her expression change.
She handed me the phone.
I read it.
*If the guardianship cannot be secured, activate the second plan.*
I looked at Lena.
“What second plan?””
Nobody answered.
Then my own phone buzzed.
Everyone at the table froze.
The number was unknown.
I opened the message.
There was no text.
Just a photograph.
My house.
Taken from across the street.
The lights were off.
And someone was standing in the upstairs bedroom window.
I zoomed in.
My blood turned cold.
The person wasn't Renwick.
It was a woman.
A woman I had never seen before.
Another message arrived.
*You have until tomorrow morning.*
May you like
Then:
*After that, they won't need you alive to prove you're unstable.*
