Chapter 5: The Sister Who Never Left
For a moment, I couldn’t move.
The words on my screen burned into my mind.
*If I tell you, he’ll know I’m still alive.*
Still alive.
Two words that changed everything.
My sister wasn’t gone.
She wasn’t dead.
She wasn’t a memory I had been forced to bury.
She was out there.
Somewhere.
Watching.
Waiting.
And somehow, she had known about the attack before I told anyone.
“Rachel?””
Emily’s voice sounded far away.
I looked up slowly.
“She’s alive.””
Emily went completely still.
“What?””
“Claire.””
The color drained from Emily’s face.
I turned the phone toward her.
“She’s alive.””
Emily read the message.
Her hand moved to her mouth.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“No, Rachel…”
The way she said it scared me.
Not because she sounded surprised.
Because she sounded afraid.
“What?”” I asked.
Emily looked at me.
“Jake told me she was gone.””
I felt a chill.
“What did he say?””
“That Claire had left town.””
“Why?””
“He said she couldn’t handle seeing you happy.””
I stared at her.
Another lie.
Another carefully constructed story.
“He knew she was alive.””
Emily nodded slowly.
“I think so.””
The room felt smaller.
I thought about all the years I spent believing my sister abandoned me.
All the birthdays.
All the holidays.
All the times I stared at my phone hoping her name would appear.
And now I knew.
She had been somewhere.
Somewhere hiding from the man I married.
My phone buzzed again.
Jake.
I didn’t answer.
A message appeared.
*Rachel, I’m trying to help you. Don’t let people manipulate you.*
I almost laughed.
The irony was almost painful.
The man who had spent years controlling my life was warning me about manipulation.
I typed a response.
Then deleted it.
No.
For once, I wasn’t going to react.
That was what Jake expected.
Anger.
Fear.
Arguments.
He knew how to win those.
But silence?
Silence gave me time.
And time was something he didn’t have anymore.
Emily watched me.
“You’re thinking differently.””
I looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
“Before, you wanted to prove Jake wasn’t who we said he was.””
I said nothing.
“Now you’re trying to figure out what he did.””
I looked at the flash drive.
The folder.
The photograph.
The pieces of a puzzle I never knew existed.
“You were right about one thing.””
Emily raised an eyebrow.
“What?””
“I was blind.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
My voice cracked.
“I spent years defending him.””
“You were his victim.””
“I was his wife.””
Emily leaned forward.
“Rachel, those two things can exist at the same time.””
I looked away.
Because admitting I was hurt was easier than admitting I had helped protect the person who hurt me.
“I need to talk to Claire.””
Emily nodded.
“I know.””
“How?””
“Because I would want to talk to my sister too.””
That answer hurt.
Because it reminded me of what I had lost.
Not just Claire.
The years between us.
The conversations we never had.
The apologies that never happened.
I picked up my phone.
My fingers hovered over Claire’s number.
The number that had somehow appeared after years of silence.
Then I pressed call.
One ring.
Two.
Three.
My heart pounded.
Then someone answered.
But nobody spoke.
“Hello?””
Silence.
“Claire?””
A shaky breath came through the phone.
Then a voice.
A voice I hadn’t heard in six years.
“Rachel.””
My knees almost gave out.
I grabbed the edge of the table.
“Claire?””
“I’m sorry.””
That was the first thing she said.
Not hello.
Not where are you?
Not I missed you.
I’m sorry.
My eyes filled with tears.
“Where have you been?””
Silence.
“I asked you where you’ve been.””
“I’ve been trying to keep you safe.””
The words broke something inside me.
“Safe?””
“Yes.””
“You disappeared.””
“I had to.””
“No.””
My voice rose.
“You didn’t have to leave me.””
Claire was quiet.
Then she said:
“You’re right.””
That hurt more than an excuse.
Because she wasn’t defending herself.
She was accepting the pain.
“I waited for you,” I whispered.
“I know.””
“How?””
“Because I watched.””
I froze.
“What?””
“I watched from a distance.””
My chest tightened.
“You watched me?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you come to me?””
“Because Jake was always there.””
I closed my eyes.
“He wasn’t always there.””
“Yes, he was.””
The certainty in her voice scared me.
“Rachel, you don’t understand. Jake doesn’t just control people. He studies them.””
I looked at Emily.
“She said the same thing.””
Claire paused.
“Emily is with you?””
“Yes.””
A long silence followed.
Then Claire whispered:
“Good.””
I frowned.
“Good?””
“She’s the only person who can prove what happened.””
I looked at Emily.
“What happened?””
Claire didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“The night I disappeared, I found out Jake had been watching you before he met you.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“He didn’t randomly fall in love with you, Rachel.””
I gripped the phone.
“Then why?””
“Because of Dad.””
I went still.
“What does our father have to do with Jake?””
Claire’s voice became softer.
“Everything.””
My mind raced.
Our father had died years ago.
He had nothing to do with Jake.
At least, that was what I believed.
“Claire, what are you talking about?””
“I found old records.””
“What records?””
“Business records.””
I frowned.
“Dad was a mechanic.””
“I know.””
“Then what?””
“He also helped people.””
I waited.
“He helped women leave dangerous situations.””
The words landed slowly.
“What?””
“Dad volunteered with a local support group. He helped victims hide from abusive partners. He helped them find legal assistance.””
I felt my throat tighten.
I remembered my father differently.
The man who always fixed broken things.
The man who told me nobody deserved to live in fear.
“Jake knew about him?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Claire took a shaky breath.
“Because Jake’s father was one of the men Dad tried to expose.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Emily.
She looked just as shocked.
“No,” I whispered.
“Rachel, listen to me.””
“What happened?””
“Years ago, Dad helped a woman escape from Don Miller.””
My hand covered my mouth.
Don.
Jake’s father.
The man sitting in the living room watching television while his son broke my face.
“Why?””
“Because Don was hurting her.””
My stomach turned.
“And Jake?””
“He knew.””
The words came out quietly.
“He was young, but he knew.””
I sat down.
Everything connected.
The family.
The silence.
The excuses.
The way they protected Jake.
They weren’t just protecting him.
They were protecting a legacy.
“Claire,” I whispered.
“Yes?””
“Why did Jake marry me?””
The line went quiet.
Too quiet.
“Claire?””
Finally, she answered.
“Because he wanted revenge.””
I felt numb.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“Rachel, I wish it was.””
My eyes filled with tears.
“He loved me.””
Claire’s voice softened.
“I know what you believed.””
I closed my eyes.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying Jake spent years making you trust him.””
The words hurt because they matched everything I had discovered.
“He studied you.””
“No.””
“He knew your fears.””
“Stop.””
“He knew your family.””
“Stop.””
“He knew exactly how to make you choose him over everyone else.””
I couldn’t speak.
Because the worst part was…
She was right.
Claire continued.
“The reason he chose you wasn’t because you were weak.””
I wiped my tears.
“Then why?””
“Because you were Dad’s daughter.””
A cold silence filled the room.
“What?””
“He wanted to destroy the person connected to the man who ruined his family.””
My heartbeat echoed in my ears.
Jake.
My husband.
The man who promised forever.
Had spent six years building a revenge plan.
“Where is the evidence?”” I asked.
Claire was silent.
Then she said:
“I hid it before Jake found me.””
“Where?””
“I can’t tell you over the phone.””
“Why?””
“Because if Jake is listening—”
A sudden crackling sound interrupted her.
Then silence.
“Claire?””
Nothing.
“Claire!””
The call ended.
I stared at my phone.
Then another notification appeared.
A location.
A single address.
And one message.
*Come alone if you want the truth.*
I looked at Emily.
She had seen the screen.
Her face turned pale.
“Rachel…”
“What?””
“That address.””
“What about it?””
May you like
She swallowed.
“That’s where Jake’s first wife disappeared.””
