Chapter 3: The Photograph That Changed Everything
For several seconds, I forgot how to breathe.
I stared at the photograph lying between Emily and me, waiting for my brain to explain what my eyes were seeing.
It couldn’t.
It shouldn’t.
But there it was.
Jake.
My husband.
Standing outside what looked like a parking garage, wearing the same dark jacket he wore in our wedding rehearsal photos.
And beside him was Claire.
My sister.
The woman who had supposedly never met him.
The woman who had supposedly disappeared from my life for no reason.
They were standing close together.
Too close.
And in Jake’s hand was the same envelope I was holding now.
The one with my name on it.
The one my sister had written.
Rachel.
My fingers went cold.
“When did you take this?”” I whispered.
Emily shook her head.
“I didn’t.””
“Then where did you get it?””
“I found it with the other things.””
“What other things?””
Emily looked uncomfortable.
“The things Jake left behind.””
I looked up.
“Left behind?””
She nodded slowly.
“When I finally escaped him, I collected whatever evidence I could. Documents. Messages. Anything that proved I wasn’t imagining things.””
My jaw tightened.
“You said you escaped.””
“Yes.””
“Not divorced?””
Emily’s eyes moved away.
“No.””
A strange feeling settled over me.
“What does that mean?””
She was quiet for a moment.
Then she said:
“It means Jake doesn’t like losing control.””
The café suddenly felt too small.
The voices around us blurred.
The sound of cups and conversations faded into the background.
All I could hear was my own heartbeat.
“Emily,” I said carefully, “what happened to your marriage?””
She looked at the photograph.
“After I found out about Claire, I tried to confront him.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did he do?””
“He smiled.””
That answer disturbed me more than if she had said he screamed.
“He smiled?””
“Yes.””
Emily folded her hands together.
“He told me I was finally understanding the truth.””
“What truth?””
“That people always leave him.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“He said everyone who got close to him eventually betrayed him. His first wife. His friends. His family.””
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It didn’t have to.””
Emily looked at me.
“He only needed me to believe it.””
I thought about Jake.
The way he always turned himself into the victim.
The way every argument somehow became about how much I had hurt him.
The way he cried the night before our wedding, telling me I was the only person who truly understood him.
I had thought that was love.
Now I wondered if it was a warning.
“Tell me about Claire,” I said.
Emily took a deep breath.
“Claire found out Jake had another life.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“Another life?””
“She discovered he was using different versions of himself with different people.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Rachel—”
“No. Jake isn’t some criminal.””
Emily didn’t argue.
She just looked at me.
And somehow, that made it worse.
“Why are you hesitating?”” she asked.
I looked down.
“Because if I believe you, then I have to admit I ignored my sister.””
Emily softened.
“Rachel.””
“I chose him.””
“You were manipulated.””
I looked away.
That word hurt.
Because it was easier to believe I had made a bad choice than to believe someone had carefully designed one.
Emily reached across the table.
“You need to understand something. Jake is very good at appearing normal.””
I almost laughed.
“Everyone says that.””
“Because it’s true.””
She pointed at the photograph.
“Look at him.””
I did.
“Does he look dangerous?””
“No.””
“Exactly.””
That was the terrifying part.
He didn’t look dangerous.
He looked like my husband.
The man who brought me coffee in bed.
The man who held my hand at my father’s funeral.
The man who told me I was his entire world.
The same man who drove his knee into my face.
My phone suddenly buzzed.
I froze.
Jake.
His name appeared on the screen.
Emily saw it.
“Don’t answer.””
I stared at the phone.
A part of me wanted to.
A part of me wanted to hear his voice.
I hated that.
I hated that after everything, I still wanted proof that maybe I was wrong.
The phone kept ringing.
Finally, it stopped.
Then a message appeared.
*Where are you? We need to talk.*
A second message came immediately.
*I’m worried about you.*
Emily looked at the screen.
“Don’t respond.””
“I need to know what he wants.””
“You already know.””
I looked at her.
She shook her head.
“He wants control back.””
My phone buzzed again.
This time, it wasn’t Jake.
It was Claire.
My heart stopped.
A message from my sister.
A number I hadn’t seen in years.
*Rachel, don’t trust Emily. She’s still lying.*
I stared at the screen.
The air disappeared from my lungs.
Emily noticed my expression.
“What happened?””
I turned the phone toward her.
Her face changed instantly.
Not fear.
Recognition.
“You have her number?””
I swallowed.
“I don’t know how.””
Emily stood up.
“Rachel, we need to leave.””
“Why?””
“Because if Claire is contacting you now, something has changed.””
I didn’t move.
My mind was racing.
Emily was telling me Jake was dangerous.
Claire was telling me Emily was lying.
Someone was manipulating me.
But who?
I looked between the photograph and my phone.
One showed my husband with my missing sister.
The other showed my sister warning me about the woman sitting across from me.
Nothing made sense.
“Sit down,” I said.
Emily hesitated.
“Rachel.””
“No.””
My voice surprised both of us.
“I’m done being told what to do.””
For the first time, Emily looked at me differently.
Not like someone she needed to save.
Like someone who had finally started fighting.
I picked up the photograph.
“I need the truth.””
Emily slowly sat back down.
“Okay.””
“Start from the beginning.””
She nodded.
“Six years ago, before your wedding, Claire contacted me.””
“Why?””
“She was investigating Jake.””
“Investigating him for what?””
Emily looked around the café.
Then she leaned closer.
“Identity theft.””
I frowned.
“That’s impossible.””
“She found evidence that he had been using other people’s information.””
“For what?””
“Money. Relationships. Connections.””
My throat tightened.
“Jake stole identities?””
“Not exactly.””
“Then what?””
Emily looked at the photograph.
“He stole stories.””
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
“It means he studied people. Learned what they wanted. Became whatever they needed him to be.””
A chill moved through me.
“That sounds insane.””
“It sounds insane because it works.””
I looked back at the picture.
Jake standing beside Claire.
The date.
The envelope.
The secret meeting.
“Why would Claire help him?””
Emily’s expression changed.
“She wasn’t helping him.””
“Then why were they together?””
“Because she was trying to expose him.””
I frowned.
“Then why didn’t she tell me?””
Emily looked down.
“Because Jake knew before she could.””
The words hit me.
“What?””
“He found out she was investigating him.””
My pulse increased.
“What happened?””
Emily hesitated.
Then she said:
“Rachel, your sister didn’t disappear because she wanted to leave you.””
My hands tightened.
“Then why?””
Emily looked directly at me.
“Because Jake convinced everyone she was unstable.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“He told people she was obsessed with him.””
“No.””
“He said she was angry because he rejected her.””
I felt sick.
Because I had heard that story.
Not from Emily.
From Jake.
Years ago, when Claire stopped answering my calls, Jake told me:
“She’s jealous.””
“She can’t accept that you’re happy.””
“She’ll come around.””
And I believed him.
I believed my husband over my sister.
A tear slipped down my cheek.
I quickly wiped it away.
Emily noticed.
“Rachel…”
“Don’t.””
She stopped.
“I don’t need sympathy.””
I looked at the photograph.
“I need answers.””
Emily nodded.
“Then you need to see something.””
“What?””
She reached into her bag and pulled out a small flash drive.
My eyes narrowed.
“What is that?””
“Something I found in Jake’s storage unit.””
“You said you found documents.””
“I did.””
She placed it on the table.
“But this is different.””
“Why?””
“Because it has your name on it.””
I stared at the flash drive.
“What’s on it?””
Emily looked toward the café entrance.
Her face suddenly lost color.
“Rachel…”
“What?””
“Someone followed us here.””
I turned around.
Near the front window stood a man wearing a black jacket.
Watching us.
My blood ran cold.
Because I knew him.
Not personally.
But I had seen him before.
He was one of Jake’s friends.
The man Jake always said was “just keeping an eye on things.””
Emily grabbed the flash drive.
“We have to go.””
I stood up.
But before we reached the door, my phone buzzed one more time.
A message appeared.
Not from Jake.
Not from Claire.
May you like
From an unknown number.
*Stop looking for answers, Rachel. Your sister made that mistake too.*
