Chapter 9: The Woman Behind the Door
Dad pushed us behind him.
The hallway was almost completely dark.
Only the weak morning light from the windows illuminated the stairs.
The voice came again.
“Come downstairs, Andre.””
Mom.
Maya's fingers dug into my arm.
Lena stepped forward.
Dad grabbed her wrist.
“No.””
She looked at him.
“She needs to see me.””
“She doesn't get to control this.””
“She already has.””
Dad whispered, “Not anymore.””
A floorboard creaked downstairs.
Then another.
Mom was climbing the stairs.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
Dad moved toward the landing.
“Stay where you are.””
Her voice floated upward.
“Still giving orders.””
She appeared at the bottom of the stairs.
She wasn't wearing the elegant clothes she'd had that morning.
Her hair was messy.
There was soot on one sleeve.
But her expression was calm.
Too calm.
She looked directly at me.
Then Maya.
Then Lena.
Her face changed.
For the first time, I saw genuine fear.
“Lena.””
Lena stepped forward.
“Hello, Mother.””
Mom's lips trembled.
“You're supposed to be dead.””
Lena smiled without warmth.
“You made sure everyone believed that.””
“You don't understand.””
“I understand everything.””
Mom looked at Dad.
“You brought her back.””
“No.””
Dad's voice was steady.
“She came back herself.””
Mom's eyes narrowed.
“You always were easy to manipulate.””
Dad flinched.
Then he said, “Not anymore.””
Mom looked at me.
“Devin.””
I stepped forward.
“What?””
“You know none of this is your fault.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You're right.””
Her eyes softened.
“I tried to protect you.””
“By stealing my future?””
“By protecting what belonged to you.””
I stared at her.
“You erased my college application.””
“I was trying to stop you from making a mistake.””
“You stole my trust.””
“I kept it safe.””
“You tried to get rid of Maya.””
“She was going to destroy this family.””
Maya stepped forward.
“I was a child.””
Mom looked at her.
“You were dangerous.””
Maya's face went pale.
“How?””
“Because you asked questions.””
Lena shook her head.
“You're still doing it.””
Mom ignored her.
She looked at Dad.
“You have no idea what I've sacrificed.””
Dad stared at her.
“You burned our house.””
“I burned the evidence.””
“You tried to destroy the records.””
“I tried to protect myself.””
The room went silent.
Mom realized what she'd admitted.
Dad slowly smiled.
Not happily.
“You just confessed.””
Her face changed.
“You recorded me?””
“No.””
He held up his phone.
The screen showed a recording.
She stared at it.
Then looked toward the hallway.
“Where's the box?””
I froze.
Dad's eyes narrowed.
“What box?””
Mom smiled.
“The one you found.””
Lena stepped forward.
“You knew.””
“I knew you would find it.””
“How?””
Mom looked at her.
“Because you always were predictable.””
Lena's face hardened.
“You're lying.””
“Am I?””
Mom pointed toward the wall.
“The box was never the important part.””
Dad frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Mom laughed softly.
“You found documents.””
“Yes.””
“Old photographs.””
“Yes.””
“A tape.””
“Yes.””
“And you think that proves everything?””
Lena stared at her.
“What are you saying?””
Mom's smile disappeared.
“Your evidence is incomplete.””
Dad's expression changed.
“Where is the rest?””
Mom said nothing.
“Where?””
She looked at me.
“Ask Devin.””
My heart stopped.
“Ask me what?””
She smiled.
“What happened the night you were born?””
I felt dizzy.
“I don't remember.””
“Exactly.””
Dad stepped between us.
“Stop.””
Mom's voice became quiet.
“You think you know who you are.””
“I know who I am.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You know who I told you to be.””
Lena moved closer.
“Tell him the truth.””
Mom looked at her.
“You first.””
Lena froze.
Mom smiled.
“Tell him who your father really is.””
Daniel stepped into the hallway.
“Don't.””
Mom looked at him.
“Well, well.””
Dad turned.
“Daniel?””
Daniel's face was grim.
Mom laughed.
“You've been helping them.””
Daniel said nothing.
She continued.
“You always were terrible at keeping secrets.””
Dad stared at Daniel.
“What is she talking about?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I was there.””
“Where?””
“The hospital.””
My heart stopped.
“The night I was born?””
He nodded.
“I was there.””
Dad's voice became sharp.
“Why?””
Daniel looked at Mom.
“Because she called me.””
Mom snapped, “Don't.””
Daniel continued.
“She needed help.””
“With what?””
“Getting you.””
I stared at him.
“Getting me?””
He nodded.
“You were a baby.””
“Why did she need help?””
“Because Mara wouldn't give you up.””
The name hit me.
My biological mother.
“What happened to Mara?””
Daniel looked down.
“She disappeared.””
Dad stepped forward.
“Was she killed?””
“No.””
Everyone went silent.
Daniel said, “She escaped.””
Mom shouted, “Enough!””
Daniel ignored her.
“She knew what your wife was planning.””
Dad looked at Mom.
“You knew Mara?””
Mom's face was cold.
“Yes.””
“How?””
“She worked for my family.””
Daniel shook his head.
“She didn't.””
Mom looked at him.
“She owed me.””
“No.””
“She owed me everything.””
Lena whispered, “Because of the money.””
Mom's expression cracked.
“Yes.””
She finally said it.
“Yes.””
She looked at me.
“Your grandfather had money.””
Dad's face hardened.
“And Mara was his daughter.””
Mom nodded.
“Mara inherited everything.””
“Then why did I inherit it?””
“Because Mara died.””
I stared at her.
“You said she escaped.””
Mom looked at Daniel.
Daniel shook his head.
“She died three years ago.””
I felt the floor disappear beneath me.
“She died?””
Daniel nodded.
“She spent her entire life trying to find you.””
Mom whispered, “And she failed.””
Lena stepped toward her.
“No.””
Mom looked at Lena.
“She found out where Devin was.””
Dad's voice was barely controlled.
“How?””
“She hired a lawyer.””
Mom smiled.
“She was going to expose me.””
“So you stopped her.””
Mom's smile vanished.
“No.””
“Then what happened?””
“She died before she could.””
Dad stared at her.
“Convenient.””
Mom looked away.
Daniel said, “Mara left a letter.””
My breath caught.
“Where?””
Daniel looked at Mom.
Mom's face went pale.
“You don't have it.””
Daniel reached into his coat.
He pulled out a sealed envelope.
Maya stepped closer.
“What does it say?””
Daniel handed it to me.
My hands shook.
The envelope had my name on it.
*Devin.*
I opened it.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
But somehow, it felt intimate.
I read the first line.
*My son, if you are reading this, then I failed to reach you while I was alive.*
My vision blurred.
Dad placed a hand on my shoulder.
I kept reading.
*You were taken from me before you could know my name.*
My throat tightened.
*I was told Andre would raise you safely. I believed him.*
I looked at Dad.
He was crying silently.
The letter continued.
*But the woman who promised to help me never intended to return you.*
I looked at Mom.
She didn't move.
*Her name is Victoria.*
Mom's real name.
The name I had never heard anyone use.
My mother's face hardened.
I continued.
*She told me you would belong to her. She said she would make sure your father never learned the truth.*
I stopped.
“Dad…”
He looked at me.
I did.
The final paragraph was only three sentences.
*You were never supposed to inherit the company.*
I frowned.
Then read the next line.
*You were supposed to inherit something far more important.*
I looked up.
Mom was staring at the letter.
And she was terrified.
I read the last sentence.
*Your grandfather left the entire family estate to the child who could prove what happened to Lena.*
Nobody breathed.
Maya looked at Lena.
Lena looked at Dad.
Dad looked at Mom.
And Mom whispered:
“No.””
The letter slipped from my hand.
Mom backed toward the stairs.
“No.””
Dad stepped forward.
“Victoria.””
She shook her head.
“You don't understand.””
“You lost.””
“No.””
“You admitted everything.””
“No!””
She turned suddenly and ran.
Dad followed.
“Stop!””
Mom reached the front door.
Before she could open it, police lights flashed across the windows.
Several officers surrounded the house.
She froze.
An officer shouted, “Victoria Bennett, step away from the door!””
She turned slowly.
Then she looked at me.
Her expression wasn't angry anymore.
It was almost peaceful.
“You still don't know the truth.””
I stared at her.
“What truth?””
She smiled.
Then she looked at Lena.
“Ask her what she did the night I supposedly killed her.””
Lena's face went completely white.
The officers moved in.
Mom raised her hands.
But before they took her away, she whispered one final sentence.
“She wasn't the victim.””
Lena closed her eyes.
May you like
And I realized, with a sick feeling in my stomach, that the last secret hadn't been about my mother at all.
It had been about my sister.
