Chapter 8: My Sister’s Confession

The message remained on my phone screen.

*Ask Olivia why she helped me cover up James’s death.*

For a moment, I couldn’t hear the waves.

I couldn’t hear the wind.

I couldn’t hear David whispering something beside my sister.

All I could hear was my own heartbeat.

Slow.

Heavy.

Controlled.

The way it became before a difficult mission.

Except this time, the battlefield was my family.

I looked at Olivia.

She looked back at me.

And I saw something I had never seen in her before.

Not arrogance.

Not jealousy.

Not entitlement.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Who sent that?”” she whispered.

I didn’t answer.

Instead, I held up my phone.

Her eyes moved across the message.

The color disappeared from her face.

“Claire…”

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Why did someone send me this?””

She looked away.

That was enough.

A confession didn’t always come from words.

Sometimes it came from someone avoiding your eyes.

“Olivia.””

She swallowed.

“Not here.””

I almost smiled.

“Not here?””

I looked around the marina.

“At least you finally understand there are places where people can hear the truth.””

David stepped forward.

“Claire, you need to stop.””

I turned toward him.

“Stop what?””

His expression hardened.

“This isn’t helping anyone.””

“Helping?””

I stared at him.

“You moved into my house.””

His face changed.

“You threatened me.””

“I never threatened you.””

“No.””

I nodded.

“You just helped steal my home.””

David looked uncomfortable.

For the first time, he didn’t have an answer.

Because there wasn’t one.

Olivia looked at him.

“David, please.””

That caught my attention.

The way she said his name.

Not like a wife asking for support.

Like someone warning him not to speak.

I looked between them.

“You both know more than you’re telling me.””

Nobody denied it.

The silence was the answer.

Robert stepped closer.

“Claire, we need to leave.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because if they found us here, others can too.””

I wanted to argue.

But then I noticed something.

A small light moving between the trees near the parking area.

Not a flashlight.

A camera.

Someone was watching.

Daniel saw it too.

“We’re out of time.””

Everything changed.

The military part of my brain took over.

I stopped thinking about betrayal.

I stopped thinking about pain.

I started calculating.

Distance.

Exit routes.

Threats.

People.

“Everyone stays together,” I said.

David looked surprised.

“You’re giving orders now?””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

The answer came so naturally that even he stopped talking.

We moved toward the vehicles.

Olivia walked beside me.

Neither of us spoke.

Until we reached my truck.

Then she stopped.

“Claire.””

I turned.

“What?””

Her eyes were wet.

“I never wanted this.””

The words almost made me laugh.

Almost.

“You never wanted what?””

She looked down.

“Any of it.””

I waited.

She took a shaky breath.

“Dad told me it was temporary.””

“What was?””

“The house.””

I stared.

“He told me you would agree.””

I felt something inside me break.

Not because I believed her.

Because I recognized the pattern.

My father always knew exactly what people wanted to hear.

“He said you would understand because you didn’t have children.””

I looked at her.

“And you believed him?””

She looked away.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

Then anger replaced it.

“You believed him because it was convenient.””

She didn’t argue.

That hurt more.

“Claire…”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“You don’t get to say my name like that.””

She flinched.

“You want to know why I’m angry?””

Her eyes lifted.

“Because Dad lied to me too.””

That caught me off guard.

“What?””

She looked at David.

Then at the ground.

“He didn’t tell me the whole plan.””

“What plan?””

Her voice became smaller.

“The villa wasn’t supposed to become ours.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Then what was it supposed to become?””

She looked at the flash drive in my hand.

“That.””

Nobody moved.

“The file.””

I stared.

“You knew about the documents?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

She closed her eyes.

“Because Dad told me.””

The betrayal felt heavier than before.

“Why?””

“Because he needed someone inside the house.””

My throat tightened.

“You.””

She nodded.

“I was supposed to find the hidden room.””

Daniel looked shocked.

“You knew where it was?””

“No.””

Olivia shook her head.

“Dad only knew there was something hidden. Thomas gave him information.””

Thomas.

Again.

The name that appeared every time I pulled a thread.

“What did Thomas promise you?””

Olivia looked ashamed.

“A fresh start.””

I almost laughed.

“He promised you a house.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“He promised to erase David’s debt.””

I looked at David.

His face was pale.

“You knew?””

He didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Olivia continued.

“David invested in something Thomas recommended.””

“Northstar.””

She nodded.

“And lost everything.””

David finally spoke.

“I was trying to fix it.””

I looked at him.

“So you helped them steal from me.””

His jaw tightened.

“I didn’t know it would go this far.””

I stepped closer.

“You knew enough.””

He looked down.

And for once, he looked ashamed.

Olivia wiped her eyes.

“Claire, I swear I didn’t know they were going after James.””

The dock became silent.

“You knew James was involved?””

She nodded slowly.

“Dad told me James was interfering.””

“When?””

“Before the accident.””

My chest tightened.

“What exactly did Dad say?””

She hesitated.

Then:

“He said James was becoming a problem.””

A problem.

Not a person.

Not her brother-in-law.

A problem.

I looked away.

Because suddenly, I understood something.

My father had spent years teaching us that family mattered.

But when family stood between him and what he wanted…

Family became an obstacle.

“What happened the night James died?””

Olivia began crying.

“I don’t know everything.””

“Tell me what you know.””

She looked terrified.

“Dad called me.””

“When?””

“That night.””

“What did he say?””

“He told me James had found something.””

My hands tightened.

“What else?””

“He told me not to answer any calls from James.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

“Because he said James was going to try to convince me he was lying.””

I stared at her.

“Did James call you?””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“Yes.””

The answer came quietly.

“What did he say?””

She covered her mouth.

“I didn’t answer.””

The words were barely audible.

“Olivia.””

“I saw his name on my phone.””

She looked at me.

“I let it ring.””

My chest tightened.

Not because she caused the accident.

Because she had a chance to help.

And she chose silence.

“Did he leave a voicemail?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

Her face changed.

“I deleted it.””

The anger inside me rose.

“Why?””

“Because Dad told me I was protecting the family.””

There it was.

The sentence that destroyed everything.

Protecting the family.

My father’s favorite excuse.

A sound came from behind us.

A vehicle engine.

Everyone turned.

A black sedan entered the marina.

Daniel immediately reacted.

“That’s not good.””

Robert stepped forward.

“Who is it?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because the car stopped.

The driver’s door opened.

And my father stepped out.

Richard Bennett.

The man who stole my home.

The man who lied to me.

The man who had spent years convincing everyone he was the victim.

He looked at Olivia.

Then at me.

Then at the flash drive.

His expression changed.

“You found it.””

Nobody spoke.

My father walked closer.

“Claire, listen to me.””

I almost smiled.

Because even now, after everything…

He still thought he could control the conversation.

“Why?””

He stopped.

“Why what?””

“Why did you do it?””

His face hardened.

“I did what I had to do.””

The answer was so simple.

So cold.

I stared at him.

“You helped destroy James.””

His expression flickered.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Regret.

Or fear.

Then it disappeared.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I understand perfectly.””

He stepped closer.

“You think this is about money.””

“Isn’t it?””

“No.””

He looked at the flash drive.

“This is bigger than money.””

The words confirmed everything.

I had been right.

The villa was never the prize.

The documents were.

My father lowered his voice.

“Give me the drive, Claire.””

I stared at him.

“And if I don’t?””

His expression changed.

The loving father disappeared.

The man underneath appeared.

“Then you’ll learn what happens when you stand against your own family.””

The threat hung in the cold air.

I looked at my father.

My sister.

The people who had lied to me.

Then I smiled.

Because he still didn’t understand.

He thought I was alone.

He thought I had spent the last two years grieving.

He thought I was the same daughter who kept forgiving him.

But he forgot one thing.

I was a commander.

And I never entered a battle without a plan.

I held up the flash drive.

“You want this?””

My father nodded.

“Yes.””

I closed my hand around it.

“Then you’re going to have to explain everything.””

His eyes narrowed.

“Explain what?””

I looked directly at him.

“The night James died.””

May you like

For the first time…

My father looked afraid.
