Chapter 7: The Ghost From James’s Past
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Daniel.
Not the person standing beneath the weak marina light.
The lake behind us was completely still.
Almost like it was waiting.
Then the figure stepped forward.
And I finally saw his face.
My breath caught.
Because I knew him.
Not well.
Not like James.
Not like my family.
But enough.
Enough to remember the funeral.
Enough to remember the way he stood away from everyone else.
Enough to remember the words he whispered before disappearing.
“James deserved better.””
I had thought he meant James deserved a better life.
A better ending.
I never imagined he meant the truth.
“Robert?””
The man looked at me.
Older now.
His hair had turned silver.
His face carried years of exhaustion.
But his eyes were the same.
“Hello, Claire.””
Daniel immediately stepped between us.
“Stay back.””
Robert looked at him.
“You still think you can protect her?””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“I should have protected James.””
The words landed heavily.
I looked between them.
“You two know each other.””
Neither answered.
That was my answer.
“Start talking.””
My voice cut through the silence.
Both men looked at me.
“I’m done finding pieces of my own life from strangers.””
Robert lowered his eyes.
“You have every right to be angry.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“I have the right to know.””
A long silence followed.
Then Robert nodded.
“James knew this day might come.””
I tightened my grip around the flash drive.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“Then tell me why.””
Robert looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“Because James discovered what your father was doing.””
My stomach tightened.
“Everyone keeps saying my father was involved.””
“He was.””
“How?””
Robert walked toward the edge of the dock.
“The villa wasn’t valuable because of the land.””
“I know.””
“No, Claire.””
He looked back at me.
“You know there were documents.””
A pause.
“You don’t know what those documents contained.””
I waited.
“Northstar Holdings was involved in illegal financial transfers for years.””
“Illegal?””
“Yes.””
Daniel spoke quietly.
“Your father helped them hide money.””
The words hurt.
Not because they surprised me.
Because some part of me had always known there was something wrong.
But knowing was different from hearing it.
“My father?””
Robert nodded.
“He wasn’t the person who created it. He was a person who benefited from it.””
I looked away.
Images appeared in my mind.
My father complaining about money.
My father asking for help.
My father telling me he was struggling.
How much of it had been real?
How much had been a performance?
Robert continued.
“James discovered the connection while reviewing Northstar’s old contracts.””
“Why was James looking?””
“Because Thomas asked him to.””
I froze.
“Thomas?””
“Yes.””
I felt anger rise.
“Why would Thomas ask James to investigate something he was involved in?””
Robert’s expression became darker.
“Because Thomas wasn’t investigating Northstar.””
“Then what was he doing?””
“He was controlling what James found.””
The pieces shifted again.
Thomas wasn’t just a partner.
He was a handler.
A person placed close enough to guide James.
Or manipulate him.
“Why would James trust him?””
“Because Thomas was good at pretending.””
I looked at the flash drive.
“And you?””
Robert looked surprised.
“Me?””
“You disappeared after James died.””
His face changed.
“I know.””
“Why?””
The question hung there.
Finally, he answered.
“Because someone tried to kill me too.””
Daniel looked down.
I noticed.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I was trying to keep you alive.””
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because I was tired of hearing that excuse.
“Everyone keeps trying to protect me.””
My voice became sharper.
“Everyone except the people who are actually hurting me.””
Nobody spoke.
Because nobody could argue.
I turned to Robert.
“What happened the night James died?””
He looked at the water.
“I was supposed to meet him.””
“When?””
“An hour before the accident.””
My heart tightened.
“Why?””
“To give him information.””
“What information?””
Robert reached into his jacket and pulled out a small notebook.
“Proof that Thomas was working with Northstar.””
I stared.
“Did James get it?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did he die?””
Robert’s face changed.
Pain.
Real pain.
“Because someone followed him.””
The wind moved through the trees.
“Who?””
Robert didn’t answer.
“Who?””
His voice was quiet.
“Your father.””
I closed my eyes.
Even though I had suspected it.
Even though every piece pointed there.
Hearing it still hurt.
“No.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Claire.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“My father didn’t kill James.””
Robert didn’t argue.
“He didn’t have to.””
I opened my eyes.
“What does that mean?””
“It means he created the situation.””
“How?””
Robert looked at Daniel.
Daniel answered.
“Your father gave Thomas James’s location.””
My body went still.
“When?””
“The night James died.””
I remembered.
That night.
The phone call.
My father saying James had gone out.
The strange calm in his voice.
I had thought it was shock.
Now I wondered.
“Why?””
Robert’s face hardened.
“Because your father believed James had something that belonged to him.””
“The documents.””
“Yes.””
I looked at the flash drive.
“And this?””
Robert nodded.
“The final file.””
“Why did James give it to Daniel?””
“He didn’t.””
I frowned.
“Then who?””
Robert looked directly at me.
“You.””
I almost lost patience.
“I’m tired of hearing that.””
“Because you still don’t understand.””
He stepped closer.
“James didn’t trust you with the file because you were his wife.””
“Then why?””
“Because you were the only person he knew who would choose the truth over comfort.””
The words silenced me.
Because they sounded exactly like James.
He always believed I was stronger than I believed.
Even when I disagreed.
Even when I was tired.
Even when I wanted to ignore the ugly parts of life.
A sound interrupted us.
A vehicle door closing.
Everyone turned.
Daniel’s face changed.
“We need to leave.””
I looked toward the parking area.
“What?””
“We’re not alone.””
Robert immediately moved.
“Where is your vehicle?””
I shook my head.
“I came alone.””
His expression hardened.
“That was a mistake.””
I almost snapped back.
Then I saw it.
A black SUV parked near the road.
The same model my father had bought Olivia years ago.
My stomach dropped.
“No.””
Daniel looked at me.
“What?””
“That car.””
The doors opened.
Two people stepped out.
One was David.
The other was Olivia.
My own sister.
Walking toward us.
I couldn’t move.
Olivia looked different.
Not the smiling woman holding champagne.
Not the sister pretending everything was normal.
This Olivia looked angry.
Desperate.
Afraid.
“Claire.””
Her voice echoed across the dock.
I stared at her.
“What are you doing here?””
She stopped a few feet away.
Her eyes moved to the flash drive in my hand.
And everything became clear.
She didn’t come to apologize.
She came for the file.
“Give it to me.””
I almost laughed.
“Seriously?””
“Claire.””
“No.””
Her expression changed.
“You don’t understand what’s happening.””
I looked at her.
“Then explain.””
She looked at Daniel.
Then Robert.
Then back at me.
“You think Dad is the worst person involved?””
I said nothing.
Because suddenly, she looked terrified.
Not guilty.
Terrified.
“There are people much more dangerous than him.””
David stepped forward.
“Olivia.””
She ignored him.
“Claire, listen to me.””
I held the flash drive tighter.
“Why should I?””
Her eyes filled with something I hadn’t expected.
Fear.
“Because James wasn’t trying to expose Dad.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What?””
Olivia swallowed.
“He was trying to expose someone else.””
“Who?””
She looked behind me.
At the darkness beyond the marina.
Then she whispered:
“The person who has been controlling our family for years.””
I turned.
Nothing.
Just the empty dock.
The quiet lake.
Then my phone vibrated.
A new message.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
*Ask Olivia why she helped me cover up James’s death.*
I looked at my sister.
She saw the message on my face.
And for the first time in my life…
Olivia looked genuinely afraid of me.
Because she knew.
May you like
I had finally found the truth.
And now I was close enough to destroy everyone who had lied to me.
