Thinking

Chapter 7: The Man Behind My Mother’s Lies

The name stayed in the air.

*Daniel Cross.*

My mother looked like she had seen a ghost.

Not annoyed.

Not offended.

Afraid.

And that scared me more than anything else.

Because Teresa Bradley was not someone who scared easily.

She could walk into any room and take control.

She could turn an argument into a lecture.

She could make people apologize for hurting her feelings when she was the one who caused the damage.

But now?

Now she was silent.

I held the phone closer.

“Richard.””

“Yes?””

“Who is Daniel Cross?””

There was a pause.

“I think you need to hear that from your mother.””

I looked at Teresa.

She immediately shook her head.

“No.””

That single word confirmed it.

I had spent my whole life watching my mother manipulate conversations.

But I had never seen her panic.

Not until now.

“Mom.””

She looked at me.

“Connor, this is not what you think.””

I almost smiled.

That sentence.

The sentence everyone says when they know exactly what something looks like.

“What do I think?””

She said nothing.

I stepped closer.

“Tell me who Daniel Cross is.””

My mother looked away.

“A mistake.””

The answer made my stomach tighten.

“A mistake?””

“Yes.””

“You’ve been paying him for months.””

“It wasn’t like that.””

“What was it like?””

No answer.

Amy stood beside me.

Quiet.

But I felt her hand touch my arm.

Not to stop me.

To remind me she was there.

Richard’s voice came through the phone.

“Connor, I can send you everything I have.””

“Do it.””

My mother immediately reacted.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She took a breath.

Then tried to regain control.

“You don’t know what you’re asking for.””

I stared.

“I’m asking for the truth.””

“You’re destroying your family.””

I looked around.

At the broken birthday decorations.

At the kitchen where my wife had been washing dishes.

At the money missing from my son’s account.

“You keep using that word.””

“What word?””

“Family.””

Her face tightened.

“Because family matters.””

“Yes.””

I nodded.

“But family isn’t a weapon.””

The words hurt her.

I could see it.

But this time, I didn’t take them back.

Richard continued.

“I’ll send the files.””

“Thank you.””

I ended the call.

The moment it disconnected, my mother turned to Amy.

“You planned this.””

Amy looked shocked.

“What?””

“You hired someone to investigate me.””

“I hired someone because I was scared.””

My mother laughed.

“Of me?””

Amy’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

The honesty of that answer changed the room.

My mother stared at her.

Like she had never considered that possibility.

Like she believed fear was something people felt only around strangers.

Not around her.

“You’re unbelievable,” Teresa whispered.

Amy shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

“I was afraid because every time I tried to tell Connor something, you found a way to make me feel like I was the problem.””

My mother looked at me.

“You believe her?””

I answered without hesitation.

“Yes.””

That was the first time I saw something break in her expression.

Not anger.

Pain.

Real pain.

“You’re choosing her.””

I swallowed.

“I’m choosing the truth.””

She sat down.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then my phone buzzed.

Richard had sent the files.

A message appeared.

*Three attachments received.*

I opened the first.

A folder of screenshots.

The second.

Audio recordings.

The third.

A report.

My hands went cold.

“Connor?””

Amy looked at me.

“What is it?””

I opened the report.

The first page had a summary.

I read slowly.

*Subject: Teresa Bradley.*

My eyes moved down.

*Investigation period: Six months.*

*Reason for investigation: Suspected financial manipulation and personal interference.*

I looked at Amy.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“I suspected.””

“Six months?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes dropped.

“Because I didn’t know if I was right.””

I understood.

She wasn’t trying to destroy my mother.

She was trying to protect herself from someone everyone else loved.

I continued reading.

The report listed dates.

Conversations.

Payments.

Contacts.

Then I saw something.

A payment.

Every month.

To:

*Daniel Cross.*

Amount:

$2,500.

My mother’s money.

I looked up.

“Who is he?””

My mother stayed silent.

“Mom.””

Still nothing.

I opened the first audio file.

A recording started.

My mother’s voice filled the room.

My blood turned cold.

It was unmistakably her.

“I need you to keep watching them.””

A man responded.

“Your son and his wife?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

A pause.

Then my mother said:

“Because I need proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Another pause.

“Proof that Amy is not the person Connor thinks she is.””

I looked at Amy.

She covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

“I need him to see the truth before she ruins his life.””

The man asked:

“What if you don’t find anything?””

My mother answered:

“Then I’ll create something.””

I stopped the recording.

Nobody moved.

My mother looked down.

No excuses.

No explanation.

Just silence.

I felt something crack inside me.

Not because she hated Amy.

I already knew that.

Because she was willing to build a lie.

She was willing to manufacture evidence.

She was willing to destroy the woman I loved just to prove she was right.

“Mom.””

She looked up.

“I never wanted to hurt you.””

I shook my head.

“But you were willing to hurt her.””

“I was trying to save you.””

“From what?””

She looked at Amy.

Then back at me.

“From losing everything.””

I laughed quietly.

“Do you even hear yourself?””

She frowned.

“What?””

“You were so afraid I would lose everything that you destroyed everything.””

Her eyes filled slightly.

But I couldn’t stop.

Not now.

“You took money from my son.””

“I was protecting him.””

“You lied to my wife.””

“I was testing her.””

The words froze me.

“What?””

My mother realized what she had said.

Too late.

“You were testing her?””

She looked away.

“I wanted to know if she was loyal.””

I stared.

“Loyal?””

“Yes.””

“To who?””

Silence.

I already knew.

And that was the most painful part.

“To you?””

“No.””

Her answer was barely audible.

“To this family.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My mother looked at me.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

I looked at Amy.

“I understand perfectly.””

My phone buzzed again.

Another message from Richard.

This time, only one sentence.

*“Connor, you need to listen to the final recording before confronting Daniel Cross.””*

I opened it.

A man’s voice came through.

“Teresa, I’m telling you again. This has gone too far.””

My mother’s voice answered.

“He won’t leave me.””

The man replied:

“You don’t know that.””

“Yes, I do.””

“Teresa—”

“He’s my son.””

A pause.

Then the man said something that made my entire body freeze.

“Your son is not the problem.””

My mother’s voice lowered.

“Then who is?””

The man answered:

“Your husband.””

I looked up.

Everyone was staring at me.

My mother.

Amy.

The recording continued.

“He knows too much.””

My blood ran cold.

My mother whispered:

“Daniel, don’t.””

The man continued:

“If Connor finds out what happened twenty-five years ago, everything falls apart.””

The recording ended.

I stood there, unable to breathe.

Twenty-five years ago.

Something my mother had hidden for my entire life.

Something Daniel Cross knew.

I looked at Teresa.

“What happened twenty-five years ago?””

She didn’t answer.

Her face had lost all color.

I stepped closer.

“Mom.””

Nothing.

“What happened?””

Finally, she whispered:

“You were never supposed to hear that.””

The room went silent.

Then she looked at me.

And for the first time in my life…

I saw fear in my mother’s eyes.

“Connor.””

May you like

Her voice broke.

“There’s something about your father you were never told.””
