Chapter 8: The Mother Who Was Dead

I stopped breathing.

The woman at the end of the corridor had my mother's face.

Not a photograph.

Not a recording.

Not someone who merely looked like her.

My mother's eyes.

My mother's mouth.

The tiny silver scar beneath her chin from the car accident she had when I was twelve.

She wore a dark coat.

One hand rested on Claire's shoulder.

The other held a pistol pointed toward the floor.

Claire looked at me.

“Mommy?””

The word broke something inside me.

I took one step forward.

The woman raised the gun.

“Stay there.””

Ryan moved in front of me.

“Get away from her.””

The woman smiled.

“Ryan.””

He froze.

Nobody called my brother that way anymore.

Not with the same softness.

She tilted her head.

“You got so tall.””

Ryan stared at her.

“Who are you?””

Her smile vanished.

“Your mother.””

“No.””

His voice shook.

“My mother is standing upstairs.””

The woman looked almost sad.

“That's what they told you.””

I couldn't move.

Every instinct screamed at me to run to Claire.

Instead, I listened.

“Mom?””

The woman looked at me.

For a second, her face softened.

Then she said,

“Not that name.””

My heart hammered.

“You're alive.””

“I was never dead.””

“But Dad said—”

“Your father says many things.””

Claire looked between us.

“Is that my grandma?””

The woman squeezed her shoulder.

“Yes.””

Claire stared at me.

“Is that really my mommy?””

I felt my eyes burn.

“Yes.””

The word came out broken.

“Yes, sweetheart.””

Claire's face crumpled.

“I knew you'd come.””

I took another step.

The gun lifted.

“Stop.””

I stopped.

Ryan turned toward me.

“Don't move.””

“I won't.””

The woman looked at him.

“Good.””

He stared at her.

“Why are you doing this?””

“Because your father made me.””

Ryan's expression hardened.

“My father didn't make you kidnap a child.””

“He made me disappear.””

I shook my head.

“You're saying Dad had you declared dead too?””

She looked at me.

“He didn't declare me dead.””

She glanced down the corridor.

“They did.””

“Who?””

“The people your father worked for.””

Ryan's jaw clenched.

“So you knew about Northstar.””

“I helped build it.””

I stared.

“You?””

“Yes.””

“You were an analyst.””

“I was.””

“You left the government.””

“I was told I resigned.””

“You disappeared.””

“I was erased.””

Michael's words came back to me.

They removed the memory.

I looked at her.

“Did they erase yours?””

“No.””

“Then how?””

She laughed quietly.

“They couldn't remove mine.””

“Why?””

“Because I was the one doing the removing.””

The corridor seemed to shrink around us.

Ryan whispered,

“You erased Emily?””

Our mother looked at me.

“I did.””

I closed my eyes.

The memories came all at once.

A hospital bed.

A metal tray.

Cold instruments.

Michael standing against the wall.

Mercer arguing.

My mother crying.

My father signing a document.

And me screaming.

Please don't take her.

I opened my eyes.

“You took Claire from me.””

“Yes.””

I felt something inside me turn cold.

“Why?””

“Because they were going to kill her.””

“You should have told me.””

“I tried.””

“When?””

“Every time I looked at you.””

“That isn't telling me.””

“No.””

She lowered the gun slightly.

“It isn't.””

Claire tugged at her coat.

“Grandma, I'm scared.””

Her expression changed instantly.

She crouched beside Claire.

“You're safe.””

Claire looked at me.

“Are you really my mommy?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you come?””

I couldn't answer.

My mother looked at me.

“She was told you abandoned her.””

“I never did.””

“I know.””

She stood again.

“I was the one who told her.””

I stared at her.

“You lied to my daughter.””

“I lied to save her.””

Ryan stepped forward.

“Everybody keeps saying that.””

His voice shook with anger.

“Everyone claims they're protecting someone.””

He pointed toward me.

“And somehow she is the only person who pays the price.””

Our mother lowered her eyes.

“Yes.””

Silence.

Ryan looked at her.

“Why did you let us believe you were dead?””

She answered without hesitation.

“Because being alive made me a threat.””

“To whom?””

“To Northstar.””

I looked at the files lining the walls.

“You were one of the thirty-seven names.””

She nodded.

“I was number one.””

A cold sensation ran down my spine.

“What does that mean?””

“I designed the original architecture.””

Mercer had once told me Northstar wasn't simply an operation.

Now I understood.

It had been a machine.

A machine designed to move identities, money, secrets, and people without leaving traces.

My mother built it.

My father fed it.

And I had tried to destroy it.

“Why was Claire connected to it?””

My mother looked at her granddaughter.

“Because you gave her something.””

“What?””

“Your biometric authorization.””

I frowned.

“I never gave her anything.””

“You did.””

“How?””

“When you held her after she was born.””

I stared at her.

“That doesn't make sense.””

“It does when you understand what Northstar really was.””

She pointed toward my file.

“Your identity had access across eight systems. Claire inherited enough of your biometric markers to open them.””

I shook my head.

“She was a baby.””

“Exactly.””

Ryan looked horrified.

“You turned a baby into a key.””

“I didn't.””

“Then who did?””

My mother looked at me.

“You did.””

“No.””

“You were trying to protect her.””

“I would never—”

“You designed the contingency before they took you.””

She pointed toward the screen.

“The message you left wasn't for them.””

She looked directly at me.

“It was for yourself.””

A memory surfaced.

Me standing in the same corridor.

Claire sleeping against my chest.

My mother holding a tablet.

I had been crying.

But I was smiling.

I remembered whispering something.

“Promise me she'll never be used.””

My mother had answered.

“I promise.””

Then my younger self had placed her hand on a scanner.

A green light.

A soft chime.

The system had said:

*LEGACY TRANSFER COMPLETE.*

I staggered.

Ryan caught me.

“Emily?””

I whispered,

“I transferred it.””

My mother nodded.

“You transferred your access into Claire.””

Michael had been right.

Claire wasn't important because of what she knew.

She was important because of what she was.

I looked at my daughter.

“No.””

My mother frowned.

“What?””

“I didn't transfer the access.””

I remembered more.

My own voice.

Sixteen years ago.

Split it.

I looked at her.

“I divided it.””

Her face changed.

“Yes.””

“Half into me.””

“Yes.””

“And half into Claire.””

“Yes.””

“Then why does everyone need Claire?””

“Because they believe the other half died with you.””

My pulse quickened.

“It didn't.””

“No.””

I looked at the files.

“Where is the other half?””

My mother smiled sadly.

“You're looking at it.””

I stared at my own file.

Then at Ryan's.

Then at the steel cabinets.

“The records.””

She nodded.

“You hid the second half in the system.””

“Not the system.””

She pointed at the walls.

“The archive.””

I understood.

The entire facility was built around the missing half of Northstar.

I turned toward Claire.

“That's why they brought her here.””

“Yes.””

“Not to kidnap her.””

“No.””

“To make me open the archive.””

“Yes.””

Ryan looked around.

“Then Vale isn't working alone.””

“No.””

“Who is?””

My mother hesitated.

Then she said,

“Your father.””

I shook my head.

“He already admitted everything.””

“Not everything.””

A voice came from behind us.

“She's right.””

I turned.

My father stood at the end of the corridor.

He had followed us down.

Ryan stared at him.

“You lied.””

Dad looked at me.

“I had to.””

“You always say that.””

He glanced at Claire.

His face changed.

For the first time, I saw fear.

Not for himself.

For her.

“Emily, listen to me.””

“No.””

“I need you to trust me.””

“You lost that right sixteen years ago.””

Dad swallowed.

“I didn't erase your memories because I wanted to.””

“Then why?””

He looked at my mother.

“She did it because I ordered her to.””

My mother's eyes closed.

I stared at him.

“You ordered my mother to erase me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Black Meridian had found out about Claire.””

My chest tightened.

“They knew she existed.””

“Yes.””

“And you made me forget her.””

“Yes.””

I stepped closer.

“To protect her?””

Dad nodded.

“Then why is she here?””

He didn't answer.

“Dad.””

His eyes filled.

“Because I made one mistake.””

“What mistake?””

He looked at my mother.

“I trusted the wrong person.””

A gunshot shattered the corridor.

My mother dropped.

Claire screamed.

Ryan grabbed her.

I fell to my knees beside my mother.

“Mom!””

Blood spread across her coat.

My father stared behind us.

The lights flickered.

A voice came through the speakers.

Calm.

Male.

Familiar.

“You always were sentimental, Robert.””

I looked up.

My father's face went white.

“Vale.””

But the voice laughed.

“No.””

The corridor doors slammed shut.

A monitor lit at the far end.

A man's face appeared.

Older.

Silver-haired.

Cold eyes.

I knew him.

I had seen his photograph inside the ledger.

The name beneath it had been marked:

*NORTHSTAR ARCHITECT — PRESUMED DECEASED*

My mother, bleeding beside me, opened her eyes.

She looked at the screen.

Then at me.

And whispered,

“That's the man who ordered all of this.””

The man on the screen smiled.

“Hello, Emily.””

My father whispered his name.

“Adrian Carter.””

I stared at the screen.

“Carter?””

Dad nodded.

His voice broke.

“My brother.””

And suddenly I understood why there had always been one empty chair in our family photographs.

There hadn't been four Carter children.

There had been five.

And the fifth had been declared dead twelve years ago.

The same year Michael vanished.

The same year my mother disappeared.

The same year I was erased.

The same year Claire became a secret.

Adrian smiled from the monitor.

“Now, Emily.””

The screen behind him began counting down.

*09:59*

“Open the archive.””

He glanced toward Claire.

“Or your daughter learns what her grandmother already knows.””

My mother gripped my hand.

Her blood stained my fingers.

“What does he mean?”” I whispered.

She looked at Claire.

May you like

Then back at me.

“He means she's not the only child who survived Northstar.””
