Thinking

Chapter 4: The Wife Before Me

For several seconds, I couldn’t move.

The woman’s voice remained pressed against my ear.

A stranger.

A woman I had never heard of.

A woman claiming she was the person David married before me.

And somehow, the Montgomery family knew exactly who she was.

“Sarah?””

Claire’s voice pulled me back.

I looked through the gate.

Margaret was staring at me.

Not with anger.

Not with arrogance.

With fear.

Real fear.

That was when I knew.

This wasn’t some random person calling to cause trouble.

This was someone who had just opened a door David had spent years keeping locked.

“Claire,” I said carefully.

“Yes.””

“Where are you?””

There was a pause.

“Not far.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means I’ve been watching the news about your divorce.””

I frowned.

“What news?””

“The livestream.””

My eyes moved toward Jessica.

She immediately looked away.

Claire continued.

“I saw your ex-husband’s family outside your house.””

My stomach tightened.

“And you decided to call me?””

“No.””

Her voice became quieter.

“I decided I couldn’t stay silent anymore.””

I stepped away from the gate.

“Why?””

“Because I know that look.””

“What look?””

“The look of someone who just realized the person they trusted might not be who they thought.””

I didn’t answer.

Because she was right.

And I hated that she was right.

For years, I had defended David.

When people questioned him, I defended him.

When Margaret criticized him, I defended him.

When I noticed strange things, I explained them away.

Because admitting the truth meant admitting I had built my life around someone who never truly let me know him.

“Claire,” I said, “I need you to explain.””

“I will.””

Her voice shook slightly.

“But not over the phone.””

“Why?””

“Because there are things you need to see.””

I looked toward Richard.

He was watching me closely.

“What things?””

“Documents.””

My heart sank.

“What kind of documents?””

“The kind David thought he destroyed.””

I felt a chill.

“Where are you?””

Claire gave me an address.

I repeated it once.

Then again.

“I’ll come.””

“Sarah—”

“Yes?””

“Come alone.””

I looked toward the gate.

At Margaret.

At Derek.

At Jessica.

At the people who had spent the afternoon trying to take my home.

“Why?””

“Because if Margaret knows I talked to you…”

Claire stopped.

“She’ll try to stop you from hearing the truth.””

I looked at Margaret again.

She was still watching me.

Still waiting.

Still trying to understand what had changed.

“Claire.””

“Yes?””

“How long have you known about me?””

The silence was longer this time.

“Seven years.””

My breath caught.

Seven years.

The exact length of my marriage.

“You knew I existed?””

“Yes.””

“Did David?””

Another pause.

Then:

“He introduced you to me.””

I froze.

“What?””

“Not directly.””

My voice dropped.

“Explain.””

“After our divorce, David told me he had moved on.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“He showed me your picture.””

A cold wave moved through me.

“When?””

“About six months after we separated.””

My mind raced.

Six months.

David and I had met around that time.

“You knew before we got married?””

“Yes.””

The answer hurt more than I expected.

Not because she existed.

But because David knew.

He knew there was a woman whose life was connected to his.

And he never told me.

“Why didn’t you contact me?””

Claire’s voice softened.

“Because I believed him.””

I looked down.

“What did he say?””

“That our marriage was over.””

“It was.””

“Yes.””

Her voice became heavier.

“But he also said you knew everything.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

That was how David worked.

He created separate versions of reality.

One for me.

One for everyone else.

“Sarah, I need you to understand something.””

“What?””

“I didn’t call because I wanted revenge.””

“I never said that.””

“You were probably thinking it.””

I didn’t respond.

Because maybe I was.

Claire continued.

“I called because I found something.””

“What?””

“A message.””

My eyes opened.

“From who?””

“David.””

I looked at Richard.

He immediately moved closer.

“What message?””

Claire took a breath.

“A message he sent two weeks before your divorce was finalized.””

My heart started beating faster.

“What did it say?””

“I can’t tell you.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Because I want you to see it yourself.””

“Why?””

“Because once you read it, you’ll understand why his family came to your house today.””

A cold silence followed.

I looked back at Margaret.

The moving trucks.

The boxes.

The performance.

They weren’t here because Margaret needed somewhere to stay.

They were here because they thought something was about to happen.

Something David had planned.

“Claire.””

“Yes?””

“Did David know I inherited this house?””

“Yes.””

The answer was immediate.

“He knew.””

My stomach turned.

“Then why would he let his family come here?””

Another pause.

“Because he believed you wouldn’t fight back.””

Those words hurt.

Not because they were cruel.

Because they sounded exactly like him.

For years, David thought he knew me.

He knew I hated conflict.

He knew I avoided arguments.

He knew I would rather give something up than spend energy fighting for it.

He mistook my peace for weakness.

And his family did too.

“Sarah?””

“I’m here.””

“You need to see the documents.””

“I will.””

“And Sarah?””

“Yes?””

“Bring your attorney.””

I looked at Richard.

“I already have one.””

“Good.””

The call ended.

For a moment, I just stood there.

Richard approached slowly.

“Who was she?””

I looked at him.

“David’s first wife.””

His expression changed.

“First?””

I nodded.

“And she says she has proof.””

“Proof of what?””

I looked at the gate.

At the people who had come to steal my home.

“Proof that David has been lying.””

Richard was quiet.

Then he said:

“Sarah, before you do anything else, there’s something you need to know.””

“What?””

He looked toward Margaret.

“She knew.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

“Margaret.””

I stared at him.

“How do you know?””

“Because when Claire’s name came up, she reacted.””

“That doesn’t prove—”

“No.””

Richard interrupted gently.

“But I’ve worked with families like this before.””

He glanced at the Montgomerys.

“People who protect a reputation at any cost.””

I looked at Margaret.

She was whispering urgently to Derek.

Jessica was no longer filming.

The entire mood had changed.

They weren’t the people in control anymore.

“Richard.””

“Yes?””

“I need to leave.””

He nodded.

“I’ll drive.””

“No.””

I looked at my car.

“I need to do this myself.””

He studied me for a moment.

Then nodded.

“Okay.””

I turned toward the gate.

Margaret immediately stepped forward.

“Where are you going?””

I stopped.

For a second, I considered ignoring her.

Then I didn’t.

“Somewhere I should have gone years ago.””

Her face tightened.

“What does that mean?””

I looked at her.

“It means I’m finally meeting the person who knows your son better than I ever did.””

The color disappeared from her face.

Derek looked confused.

Jessica looked nervous.

And Margaret?

Margaret looked like she already knew what I was about to discover.

I walked to my car.

But before I opened the door, I heard her voice behind me.

“Sarah.””

I turned.

Margaret gripped the iron gate.

Her expression was no longer angry.

It was desperate.

“Don’t believe everything she tells you.””

I stared at her.

The irony almost made me laugh.

Because that was exactly the advice I should have followed seven years ago.

Except the person I should have questioned wasn’t Claire.

It was her son.

I got into my car.

And as I drove away from the house I had spent my entire life protecting, I realized something terrifying.

The Montgomerys hadn’t come to take my home.

They had come because they were afraid I would find out why they needed it.

And when I arrived at Claire’s address forty minutes later, I understood why.

The house was empty.

The lights were off.

The front door was slightly open.

And on the floor inside was a single envelope.

May you like

My name was written across the front.

In David’s handwriting.
