Chapter 10: The Person Behind Everything

The name on the screen stayed there.

A name I never expected to see.

A name that connected my childhood, my marriage, the Montgomery family, and every secret I had uncovered in the last few days.

*Daniel Whitmore.*

My uncle.

My father’s younger brother.

The man who had stood beside me at my parents’ funeral.

The man who told me he would always protect me.

The man who helped manage my father’s estate after he died.

The man who told me the house was all my parents had left behind.

I stared at the screen.

“No.””

The word came out before I could stop it.

Richard looked at me.

“Sarah…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

My uncle.

The person who had held my hand when I was twelve and cried after losing my mother.

The person who brought me birthday gifts every year.

The person who told me family was the only thing people could truly count on.

Richard looked at the documents.

“I need to verify this.””

“Verify what?””

“That the file is authentic.””

Margaret stepped closer.

Her face was pale.

“Daniel.””

I looked at her.

“You know him?””

She gave a small, broken laugh.

“Everyone knew him.””

“What does that mean?””

Margaret looked at the screen.

“Daniel was the person Robert trusted most.””

My stomach tightened.

“Trusted him?””

“Yes.””

“Then why would my father say he was the person who betrayed everyone?””

Margaret didn’t answer.

Because she knew.

The answer was already there.

Richard opened the document.

Lines of information filled the screen.

Transactions.

Dates.

Company records.

Names.

My father’s company.

Robert Montgomery’s company.

And money moving between accounts.

For years.

Richard scrolled slowly.

“Sarah…”

“What?””

“This is extensive.””

“How extensive?””

He looked at me.

“Your uncle wasn’t stealing from one family.””

I felt cold.

“He was stealing from both.””

The room became silent.

Margaret sat down.

All the strength left her.

“I knew something was wrong.””

I turned toward her.

“What?””

She looked ashamed.

“I suspected.””

“You suspected?””

“Yes.””

“And you did nothing?””

Her eyes filled.

“I tried.””

I almost laughed.

“Everyone says that.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“This is different.””

I waited.

“I warned Robert.””

“About Daniel?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

She looked at the floor.

“He didn’t believe me.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel was his best friend.””

I looked back at the screen.

The same story.

The same mistake.

Everyone trusted the wrong person.

My father trusted his brother.

Robert trusted his friend.

I trusted my husband.

And somehow, Daniel was always standing in the middle.

Richard opened another file.

The video continued automatically.

My father appeared again.

This time, his expression was heavier.

“Sarah, if you are seeing this, then Daniel found a way to make sure you knew only what he wanted you to know.””

My breath caught.

My father knew.

He knew Daniel would survive him.

“Your uncle is dangerous because he does not act like someone who wants power.””

My father looked directly into the camera.

“He acts like someone who wants to help.””

A chill moved through me.

Because that was exactly who Daniel was.

The helper.

The rescuer.

The family man.

The person nobody questioned.

“He will tell you he protected you.””

My father paused.

“He will tell you he made difficult choices for your benefit.””

The room was completely silent.

“But Sarah, protecting someone does not mean controlling their entire life.””

My eyes burned.

Because those words felt like they were written for everyone.

David.

Margaret.

Daniel.

Everyone who claimed they knew what was best for me.

My father continued.

“You deserve the truth, even if the truth hurts.””

The video changed.

A new document appeared.

*ORIGINAL INHERITANCE RECORDS.*

Richard opened it.

His eyes widened.

“What?””

“What?””

He looked closer.

“Sarah…”

“What?””

“This house wasn’t just inherited.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

He turned the screen toward me.

I read the document.

My parents hadn’t simply left me the property.

They had created a trust.

A private trust.

And the beneficiary wasn’t just me.

It included someone else.

My name.

And another.

*Claire Montgomery.*

I froze.

“What?””

Richard looked shocked.

“Claire.””

Margaret whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

I stared at the document.

“Why would Claire be included?””

Richard read further.

“Because your parents considered her family.””

The words hit me.

Family.

A woman I had never met.

A woman who had once been David’s wife.

A woman connected to my father’s secrets.

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

Then my phone rang.

David.

I looked at the screen.

After everything…

I answered.

“Why?””

There was silence.

Then his voice.

“Because I knew you would find out eventually.””

My jaw tightened.

“You knew about Daniel.””

“Yes.””

“You knew my father suspected him.””

“Yes.””

“You knew everything.””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

“I knew pieces.””

“Enough to marry me.””

Silence.

That hurt more than an argument.

Finally, David said:

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

The honesty was painful.

“Why?””

“Because my father made me promise.””

I almost laughed.

“Another promise.””

“Sarah—”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I want the truth.””

A long pause.

Then:

“My father was dying.””

I didn’t speak.

“He told me Daniel had destroyed everything.””

David continued.

“He told me the only way to protect what your parents built was to stay close to you.””

“So you married me.””

“Yes.””

The word felt like a wound.

“But that wasn’t the whole reason.””

I said nothing.

“Sarah, I know what it sounds like.””

“It sounds like my entire marriage started because I was a responsibility.””

Another pause.

Then David said:

“At first.””

The honesty hurt.

But I listened.

“At first, I thought I was protecting you.””

His voice changed.

“Then I met you.””

I looked away.

“I fell in love with you.””

My eyes closed.

“Don’t.””

“Sarah.””

“Don’t make that easier.””

“I’m not trying to.””

“Then what are you trying to do?””

“Tell you the truth.””

I looked at the screen.

At the documents.

At the years of secrets.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because every time I tried…”

He stopped.

“Every time I tried, I was afraid you would see me the way you see me now.””

I swallowed.

“You lied.””

“Yes.””

“You manipulated me.””

“Yes.””

“You let your family come take my home.””

His voice became quieter.

“I know.””

“Then why should I believe anything you say?””

Silence.

Then:

“You shouldn’t.””

That answer surprised me.

“You shouldn’t believe me because I’m asking you to.””

I listened.

“You should believe the evidence.””

I looked at Richard.

At the files.

At the truth.

For once, David wasn’t asking me to forgive him.

He wasn’t asking me to trust him.

He was admitting he had lost the right.

“Where are you?””

I asked.

“I’m leaving.””

“Leaving where?””

“Somewhere Daniel can’t find me.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Daniel knows you found out.””

My heart stopped.

“How?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because he’s the reason your divorce happened.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He wanted me away from you.””

“Why?””

“Because he knew if we stayed together, eventually I would tell you.””

The room went quiet.

Richard stepped closer.

“Sarah.””

I ignored him.

“David.””

“Yes?””

“Where is Daniel now?””

Silence.

Then David said:

“He’s at your house.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

“He came there an hour ago.””

I looked toward the window.

The house.

My house.

The place where this entire story began.

“Why?””

David whispered:

“Because he’s looking for what your father hid.””

The call ended.

I turned toward the front door.

Everyone saw my expression.

Richard stood immediately.

“What happened?””

I grabbed the flash drive.

“Daniel is at my house.””

Margaret stood.

“No.””

I looked at her.

For the first time, we were on the same side.

“What?””

Her voice trembled.

“If Daniel knows…”

She looked toward the window.

“He won’t stop.””

The old fear returned to her face.

Not fear for herself.

Fear for what was coming.

I walked toward the door.

Richard followed.

“Sarah, we call the police.””

“No.””

He stopped.

“No?””

I looked back.

“For years, everyone else decided when I was allowed to know the truth.””

I held the flash drive.

“Not anymore.””

Outside, the wind moved through the oak tree.

The same tree that had held my father’s final message.

The same tree that had hidden the truth.

I stepped toward the house.

Because I finally understood something.

The Montgomery family didn’t come to steal my home.

Daniel didn’t want my house.

He wanted what was buried beneath it.

May you like

And now that I knew the truth…

I was the only person standing between him and everything my parents died protecting.
