Chapter 8: The Person Behind the Door
Nobody wanted to be the first person to speak.
Because once Mr. Hayes said those words, every person in the backyard became a suspect.
Someone here had helped Ethan Vale.
Someone inside my home had been trying to destroy my daughter.
I looked at Marissa.
She looked terrified.
For once, I couldn’t tell if she was afraid of being exposed or afraid of what someone else had done.
I looked at Kendra.
Her face was pale.
She immediately shook her head.
“It wasn’t me.””
The desperation in her voice broke something inside me.
Because she shouldn’t have had to say it.
Not after everything.
“Kendra,” I said gently.
“I swear.””
She looked at Zoria.
“I would never do that to you.””
Zoria stared at her.
Then slowly nodded.
“I know.””
That small moment between them mattered.
Because after years of being pushed apart, they were finally choosing each other.
Mr. Hayes stepped toward the house.
“The university will involve authorities if necessary.””
Marissa’s eyes widened.
“Authorities?””
“Yes.””
“Thomas, please.””
He looked at her.
“Please what?””
She had no answer.
Because there was no excuse left.
I followed his gaze toward the house.
“Who had access to our internet?””
Everyone looked around.
Marissa shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
“Think.””
“I’m serious.””
“You don’t know who uses the Wi-Fi in your own home?””
She looked away.
That silence bothered me.
Because Marissa always knew everything happening around her.
She knew what people wore.
What people said.
What people thought.
But suddenly she knew nothing.
Kendra spoke quietly.
“There was someone else here.””
Everyone turned.
“What do you mean?”” I asked.
She hesitated.
“Yesterday.””
My heart tightened.
“Who?””
Kendra looked at Marissa.
“She had a meeting.””
Marissa’s expression changed.
“Kendra.””
“No.””
Kendra stepped forward.
“I’m done covering for you.””
Marissa stared at her.
“I said no.””
“And I said I’m done.””
The strength in Kendra’s voice surprised everyone.
“Who was here?”” I asked.
Kendra looked at me.
“Ethan.””
The name hit the air like a storm.
“You saw him?””
She nodded.
“Yesterday afternoon.””
“Where?””
“Here.””
My jaw tightened.
“In this house?””
“Yes.””
Marissa immediately interrupted.
“He only came to talk.””
“About what?”” I asked.
She didn’t answer.
“About what, Marissa?””
She looked at Zoria.
Then away.
“About fixing the situation.””
“What situation?””
Her silence told me enough.
But I needed to hear it.
“The scholarship?””
She nodded.
My anger returned.
“You brought him here after everything?””
“No.””
She shook her head quickly.
“He came because I called him.””
The backyard erupted.
Even Marissa seemed shocked by her own confession.
I stared at her.
“You called him?””
“I was panicking.””
“So you called the man who was threatening our daughter?””
“I didn’t know he would do that.””
“You knew enough to hire him.””
She started crying.
“I thought he could make the problem disappear.””
There it was.
The truth.
Not love.
Not protection.
Fear.
Marissa had created a problem, then kept making worse choices because she couldn’t admit she was wrong.
Mr. Hayes looked at her.
“What did he say during that meeting?””
Marissa wiped her face.
“He said Zoria’s application was dangerous.””
“Dangerous?””
“He said if the university reviewed everything, she could lose her admission.””
Zoria’s face fell.
“But he lied.””
“Yes.””
Marissa whispered.
“I know that now.””
I looked at my daughter.
“Did he threaten you directly?””
She hesitated.
Then nodded.
“He called me.””
Everyone froze.
“When?””
“Two nights ago.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because I thought you would believe Mom.””
The sentence destroyed me.
Not because it was unfair.
Because it was true.
My daughter had been living in a house where she didn’t feel safe telling the truth.
I walked closer.
“Zoria.””
She looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
She shook her head.
“I know you didn’t know.””
“But I should have.””
She looked down.
“I just wanted everything to stop.””
Mr. Hayes looked at her.
“What did Ethan say?””
Zoria took a breath.
“He said my admission could be taken away.””
“And?””
“He said if I cooperated, nobody would have to find out.””
My hands tightened.
“What did he want?””
She looked at Marissa.
“He wanted me to write a statement saying I lied on my application.””
Everyone went silent.
A false confession.
That was the plan.
Not just removing the scholarship.
Destroying her reputation.
Making her disappear.
Mr. Hayes’s expression hardened.
“This is more serious than we thought.””
I looked at him.
“What can happen?””
“If the university confirms fraud attempts, Ethan could face legal consequences.””
“And Marissa?””
He didn’t answer.
But we all understood.
My wife looked terrified.
Then suddenly, her phone rang.
Everyone jumped.
She looked at the screen.
Her face changed.
“No.””
“What?””
She didn’t answer.
The phone kept ringing.
Finally, Mr. Hayes said:
“Answer it.””
Marissa looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because we need to know who is calling.””
Her hands shook as she accepted.
“Hello?””
At first, nobody could hear.
Then her expression changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Ethan, don’t do this.””
Everyone heard the name.
She put the call on speaker.
A man’s voice filled the backyard.
“You should have handled this better, Marissa.””
My entire body went cold.
“You’re finished,” she whispered.
“No.””
Ethan laughed.
“You are.””
Marissa looked around.
“Where are you?””
“That doesn’t matter.””
“It does.””
“No, it doesn’t. Because your husband already knows everything.””
I stepped forward.
“Ethan.””
The line went quiet.
Then he said:
“Daniel Carter.””
The way he said my name made my skin crawl.
“You have no idea what your wife was willing to do to protect her image.””
My eyes moved to Marissa.
She looked away.
“What do you want?””
“I want what I was promised.””
“By who?””
A pause.
Then:
“By the woman standing next to you.””
Everyone looked at Marissa.
She whispered:
“No.””
Ethan continued.
“She told me if I fixed the application problem, she would pay the rest.””
My stomach dropped.
“The rest?””
“Yes.””
Mr. Hayes stepped closer.
“How much?””
Ethan laughed.
“Ask her.””
I looked at my wife.
“How much did you promise him?””
She didn’t speak.
“Marissa.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“Seventy thousand.””
The number hit harder than the first one.
Thirty thousand paid.
Seventy thousand promised.
For what?
For lies.
For control.
For pretending she had power over something she never understood.
Ethan’s voice came through the phone.
“She thought she could use me and walk away.””
Marissa whispered:
“I didn’t.””
“Yes, you did.””
A pause.
Then Ethan said:
“But there’s something you don’t know.””
The entire backyard went silent.
“What?”” Marissa asked.
His voice lowered.
“I never needed your money.””
A chill ran through me.
“What are you saying?””
“I needed access.””
Mr. Hayes’s face changed.
“Access to what?””
Ethan laughed softly.
“Everything.””
The call ended.
Immediately.
No goodbye.
No warning.
Just silence.
I looked at Mr. Hayes.
“What does he mean?””
Before he could answer, the back door opened.
Everyone turned.
A man stood inside the house.
Not Ethan.
Someone else.
Someone who had been inside our home.
Someone who had access.
He held a laptop in his hands.
And when he saw all of us staring at him…
he dropped it.
Because on the screen was Zoria’s entire university application.
And beside it…
May you like
was a folder labeled:
*FINAL PLAN.*
