Thinking

Chapter 5: The Plan Hidden in Plain Sight

The words on the page seemed to burn into my eyes.

*“After Daniel signs everything, Nia will be gone.””*

For a few seconds, I couldn’t understand what I was seeing.

My brain refused to connect the letters into meaning.

Gone.

Not moved.

Not staying somewhere else.

Gone.

I looked at the date.

Tomorrow.

My fingers tightened around the notebook.

“Vanessa.””

My voice sounded different.

Even to me.

She didn’t answer.

“Explain this.””

Her eyes moved to the notebook.

Then away.

That was enough.

I didn’t need a confession.

I needed to understand how far this went.

“Daniel, it’s not what you think.””

I almost smiled.

Those words.

Again.

The same words people used when the truth was exactly what you thought.

“Then tell me what it is.””

She stepped forward.

“The notebook isn’t mine.””

I stared at her.

“It was in your closet.””

“Someone put it there.””

I looked at Malik.

My son shook his head slowly.

“I found it behind her clothes.””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“You went through my things?””

Malik flinched.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

The old fear.

The instinct to apologize.

I stepped between them.

“Don’t.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Don’t what?””

“Don’t make him defend himself for finding the truth.””

Her lips parted.

But she said nothing.

I looked back at the notebook.

There were pages filled with dates.

Meetings.

Phone numbers.

Expenses.

Names.

And things I didn’t understand yet.

But one thing was clear.

This wasn’t random.

This wasn’t a diary.

It looked organized.

Planned.

I turned another page.

A line caught my attention.

*“Custody concerns must be documented before final hearing.””*

My stomach dropped.

“What is this?””

Vanessa looked nervous.

“Daniel—”

“No.””

I raised the notebook.

“What is this?””

She took a breath.

“It was just research.””

“Research for what?””

She looked away.

And that answer hurt more than anything.

Because it meant she knew exactly what she was doing.

I grabbed my phone and called my attorney.

The call connected after two rings.

“Daniel?””

“Robert, I need your help.””

My attorney, Robert Hayes, had handled my adoption paperwork. He had been patient with me through every step.

But I had never called him sounding like this.

“What happened?””

I looked at my children.

Then at Vanessa.

“I need you to tell me something.””

“What?””

“If someone intentionally tried to interfere with an adoption…”

I paused.

“What would happen?””

There was silence.

A serious silence.

“Daniel,” Robert said carefully.

“What are you asking?””

“I found something.””

“What kind of something?””

I looked at the notebook.

“Evidence.””

Another pause.

“Are the children safe?””

I looked toward Nia.

She was standing at the bottom of the stairs now.

Listening.

I immediately softened my voice.

“Yes.””

“Good. Don’t leave them alone with anyone you don’t trust.””

My eyes moved toward Vanessa.

“Can we meet tonight?””

“I’ll come over.””

I ended the call.

Vanessa looked stunned.

“You called your lawyer?””

“Yes.””

“Over a notebook?””

“No.””

I held up the phone.

“Over everything.””

She sat down.

For the first time since I came home, she looked smaller.

Not innocent.

Not helpless.

Just caught.

“I never wanted to hurt them.””

I stared at her.

“Then why did you?””

She looked at the table.

“I was angry.””

“That’s not an excuse.””

“I know.””

The admission surprised me.

She continued quietly.

“I know what I did was wrong.””

I waited.

Because I wanted to hear something real.

Something honest.

But instead, she whispered:

“I just didn’t think you would choose them over me.””

My chest tightened.

Again.

The same thing.

The same impossible belief.

“You still don’t understand.””

She looked up.

“Understand what?””

“That loving them was never choosing against you.””

Her eyes filled.

“You don’t know what it’s like.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice became colder.

“I don’t.””

“Because nobody ever chooses you first.””

I looked at her.

“That’s not true.””

She laughed sadly.

“You had your first wife.””

A painful silence followed.

I rarely talked about my late wife.

Not because I was hiding her.

Because some memories were still too heavy.

“My first wife died.””

Vanessa looked down.

“I know.””

“She didn’t leave me.””

“I know.””

“She didn’t choose someone else.””

“I know.””

I stepped closer.

“And my children didn’t choose to lose their mother.””

Vanessa’s eyes moved toward the stairs.

Where Nia was standing.

Where Malik was standing.

“They lost someone too.””

She said nothing.

I continued.

“They needed more love after that.””

My voice broke slightly.

“Not less.””

For a moment, I thought maybe she finally understood.

Then her phone buzzed again.

The screen lit up.

This time, I saw it.

Another message from Marcus.

*“Why haven’t you answered? Did Daniel find out?””*

Everything stopped.

Vanessa grabbed the phone.

Too late.

I had already read it.

“Who is Marcus?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her face turned pale.

“He’s nobody.””

“Then why is he asking if I found out?””

Silence.

Malik looked confused.

Nia looked scared.

I felt something cold move through my chest.

There was another person.

Another piece of this.

“Who is he?””

Vanessa sat down.

“I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

She rubbed her forehead.

“He helped me.””

“With what?””

No answer.

I stepped closer.

“With what?””

Her voice became barely audible.

“With the adoption.””

I froze.

“What does that mean?””

She looked up.

“He gave me advice.””

“Advice?””

“Yes.””

“About my daughter?””

She closed her eyes.

“Daniel…”

“About my daughter?””

“Yes.””

The anger inside me returned.

“Who is this man?””

“He works in family services.””

That sentence made everything worse.

“Family services?””

She nodded.

“I met him before.””

“When?””

“During the adoption process.””

I felt sick.

“You knew him while we were adopting Nia?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“No.””

“Why?””

She looked away.

“Because you wouldn’t understand.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You keep saying that.””

I turned away.

Because if I looked at her too long, I didn’t trust myself.

Then Robert arrived.

Twenty minutes later, he sat at the dining table with the notebook, the camera, and my phone recording everything.

He read quietly.

Page after page.

His expression changed.

Not dramatically.

But enough.

Finally, he looked at me.

“Daniel.””

“Yes?””

“I need to ask you something.””

“What?””

“Has Vanessa ever threatened to leave with the children?””

I frowned.

“No.””

Robert looked at the notebook.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

He turned the page.

“Because there are notes here about changing custody arrangements.””

My blood went cold.

“What?””

Robert pointed.

“She was gathering information about claiming primary custody.””

I stared.

“Of my children?””

Robert nodded.

“There are references to your work schedule, your travel, and your hours away from home.””

I felt numb.

“She was building a case.””

Robert looked serious.

“Yes.””

The room became silent.

Then Nia whispered:

“She told me Dad was too busy to take care of me.””

Everyone turned.

My daughter stood there, trembling.

Robert softened his voice.

“Nia, what else did she say?””

Nia looked at me.

“She said if Dad knew how hard I was…”

She swallowed.

“He would let someone else raise me.””

My heart broke.

I walked toward her.

“No.””

She looked up.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I held her shoulders.

“Never apologize for being my daughter.””

She cried.

Quietly.

But this time, she wasn’t crying alone.

Robert closed the notebook.

“There’s one more thing.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He turned the page.

“This name appears several times.””

He pointed.

*Marcus Vale.*

The same name from the messages.

Robert’s expression became serious.

“Daniel, I know this man.””

My stomach tightened.

“How?””

Robert looked at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“Because he was removed from a previous family case.””

The room went silent.

“Why?””

Robert took a breath.

“Because he was accused of manipulating families during custody disputes.””

I felt the world shift.

Vanessa wasn’t just hiding a secret.

She had connected herself to someone dangerous.

I looked at my wife.

“Did you know?””

Her silence answered.

I stepped back.

“Did you know?””

Finally, she whispered:

“Yes.””

The word landed like a punch.

“You knew?””

“I thought he could help me.””

“Help you do what?””

She looked down.

And then she said something that made everyone freeze.

“I thought I could prove Nia was the reason you were unhappy.””

Nobody spoke.

Not even Vanessa.

Because once she said it out loud, she couldn’t take it back.

Robert slowly stood.

“Daniel.””

I looked at him.

“You need to hear this.””

“What?””

He pointed at the notebook.

“There’s one more date written here.””

My eyes followed his finger.

A date.

Tomorrow.

And beside it:

*Court appointment.*

I felt my heartbeat stop.

“Court appointment?””

Robert nodded.

Then he showed me the final line.

May you like

The line Vanessa had planned for tomorrow.

*“Emergency custody request — remove Nia before Daniel can object.””*
