Chapter 6: The Son I Raised, The Stranger I Found
I met David at the small café three blocks from my house.
The same café where I used to take him after school.
The same place where he once told me he wanted to become an astronaut.
He was sitting in the corner booth when I arrived.
He looked exhausted.
Not angry.
Not arrogant.
Just tired.
For a moment, I saw the little boy again.
Then I remembered the documents.
The claim.
The lies.
I sat across from him.
“What do you want?””
He looked down.
“Coffee?””
“No.””
He swallowed.
“I’m sorry.””
The words surprised me.
But they didn’t fix anything.
“I’m listening.””
David rubbed his hands together.
“I didn’t know it would get this far.””
I stared at him.
“You filed legal paperwork.””
“I know.””
“You planned this for three months.””
“I know.””
“You came into my home while trying to take it.””
His eyes closed.
“I know.””
The repetition almost made me angry.
“Then tell me why.””
He looked out the window.
“Because I felt like Dad chose you over me.””
I went quiet.
“What?””
“After he died, everything became about protecting you.””
“That’s not true.””
“It felt true.””
His voice cracked.
“I was twenty-eight. I had just lost my father. I thought I would inherit something. I thought I would have a piece of him.””
I looked at my son.
“You had pieces of him everywhere.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I had memories.””
The pain in his voice almost reached me.
Almost.
“But Sarah showed me the documents.””
“Sarah.””
He flinched.
“Yes.””
“And what did she tell you?””
“That Dad had hidden things from me.””
“He had.””
David looked up.
“What?””
“He hid things because he was trying to protect you.””
David laughed bitterly.
“Protect me from what?””
I leaned forward.
“From becoming like the people around him.””
He looked away.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he whispered:
“Sarah told me something.””
“What?””
“That your husband’s company almost belonged to her father.””
I waited.
“She said Dad took advantage of him.””
My heart sank.
Because I knew.
The truth had been twisted.
Again.
“Your father saved her father.””
David frowned.
“What?””
“Robert saved him from bankruptcy.””
David looked shocked.
“Then why did Sarah say—”
“Because Sarah was never told the truth.””
I stopped.
Then corrected myself.
“Or maybe she was.””
David went silent.
“Mom…”
I looked at him.
“Where is Sarah?””
“I don’t know.””
That answer came too fast.
I studied him.
“You know something.””
He looked uncomfortable.
“She left this morning.””
“Where?””
“I don’t know.””
“David.””
He sighed.
“She said she needed to fix something.””
My stomach tightened.
“Fix what?””
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I stood.
“Where did she go?””
“Mom.””
“Where?””
He looked down.
Then whispered:
“My father’s old office.””
I froze.
Robert’s old office.
The one that had been empty for years.
The one where all the original company files had been stored.
The one Sarah’s father once had access to.
I grabbed my bag.
David stood.
“Mom, wait.””
I looked at him.
“Are you finally choosing a side?””
His face fell.
“I’m choosing the truth.””
I nodded slowly.
“Then prove it.””
We drove back together.
Neither of us spoke.
When we reached the house, the front door was open.
My heart dropped.
“Sarah?””
No answer.
David ran inside.
I followed.
The office door was open.
Files were scattered across the floor.
Drawers had been emptied.
Someone had been searching.
David picked up a folder.
“Mom.””
I walked toward him.
He held a document.
His face was pale.
“What is it?””
He handed it to me.
I looked down.
And my blood ran cold.
It wasn’t a property document.
It wasn’t a trust.
It was a letter.
From Robert.
But this time, it wasn’t addressed to David.
It wasn’t addressed to me.
It was addressed to Sarah.
And the first sentence read:
“Dear Sarah, if you are reading this, then you finally found the truth about what your father did.””
I looked at my son.
Then at the empty office.
Because suddenly, I understood.
Sarah wasn’t just trying to take my house.
She wasn’t just trying to help David.
She had been searching for something else.
Something her father had hidden.

And now that she found Robert’s letter…
She knew the one thing that could destroy her entire family.
