Chapter 12: The Truth Sloan Wanted Me to Hear
I met Sloan at a quiet coffee shop.
Not because I trusted her.
Because I wanted witnesses.
Denise sat at a nearby table.
Close enough.
Not close enough to interfere.
Sloan arrived five minutes late.
She looked different.
Not confident.
Not smug.
Tired.
She sat across from me.
“You came.””
“I wanted to hear what you had to say.””
She looked around.
“You brought Denise.””
“Yes.””
A small smile crossed her face.
“Of course you did.””
“What do you want, Sloan?””
She looked down.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then:
“I know you hate me.””
I almost interrupted.
But she continued.
“I deserve that.””
That surprised me.
“I don’t think you came here to apologize.””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“I came because Harrison is going to destroy himself.””
I stared.
“You’re blaming him now?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I’m telling you the truth.””
I waited.
She took a breath.
“Harrison was never the one who planned everything.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What?””
“He wanted the money.””
I didn’t react.
“But the house. The guardianship. The legal strategy.””
She looked away.
“That was me.””
The confession sat between us.
For a moment, I didn’t know what to say.
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with anger.
Not at me.
At herself.
“Because I was scared.””
“That doesn’t excuse anything.””
“I know.””
She looked down.
“I grew up with nothing.””
I remained silent.
“My parents lost everything when I was young. I watched people with money survive while people like us disappeared.””
“So you decided to become one of them?””
Her face tightened.
“No.””
She swallowed.
“I decided I would never be powerless again.””
I shook my head.
“You hurt innocent people.””
“I know.””
“Me.””
“Yes.””
“Your husband.””
She looked away.
That reaction told me enough.
“You don’t love Harrison.””
Her eyes lifted.
“What?””
“You love what Harrison can provide.””
The silence confirmed it.
Then Sloan whispered:
“He made it easy.””
My stomach turned.
“Easy?””
“He already felt guilty.””
She continued.
“He hated himself for the debt. He hated that his father had saved him. He hated that he couldn’t become the man he promised he would be.””
I looked away.
Because some part of me understood.
Not forgave.
Understood.
“He wanted to fix everything.””
“And you convinced him the solution was stealing from me.””
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
“Why tell me now?””
Sloan looked toward the window.
“Because Harrison went too far.””
“What did he do?””
She hesitated.
Then pulled something from her purse.
A flash drive.
She placed it on the table.
“What is this?””
“Everything.””
I didn’t touch it.
“What does that mean?””
“Emails. Messages. Documents.””
She looked at me.
“Proof.””
My heart raced.
“Why?””
“Because tomorrow he’s going to file the final guardianship request.””
I froze.
“Tomorrow?””
“Yes.””
“And this stops him?””
“Maybe.””
“Maybe?””
Sloan looked at me.
“I’m not the hero here, Evelyn.””
Her voice cracked.
“I’m part of the reason you’re in this situation.””
For the first time, she looked genuinely ashamed.
I reached for the flash drive.
Then stopped.
“How do I know this isn’t another trick?””
“You don’t.””
That answer surprised me.
She stood.
“But you do know one thing.””
“What?””
She looked directly at me.
“Harrison was never trying to save himself.””
A pause.
“He was trying to save his pride.””
Then she walked away.
I sat there staring at the flash drive.
A few minutes later, Denise joined me.
“What happened?””
I placed it on the table.
“Sloan confessed.””
Denise’s eyes widened.
“To everything?””
“I think so.””
She picked up the drive.
“We need to examine this carefully.””
I nodded.
As we walked outside, my phone buzzed.
A message from Rachel.
Urgent.
I opened it.
One sentence.
“Evelyn, do not trust the flash drive yet.””
My heart stopped.
Another message appeared.
“Because Sloan left something out.””
I stared at the screen.
Then a final message came through.
“She wasn’t the only one who planned this.””
I looked back at the coffee shop.
Sloan was gone.
May you like
And for the first time, I wondered if she had come to confess…
or if she had come to make sure I found exactly what she wanted me to find.
