Chapter 2: The Footage They Feared

The police arrived twenty-three minutes later.

By then, Mia had wrapped herself in a blanket from the guest bedroom, Daniel had paced a groove into my living room carpet, and Claire had refused to leave my side.

Two officers entered through the front door.

The first was a broad-shouldered man in his early fifties with a silver badge clipped to his belt. His name was Officer Reynolds. The second, Officer Patel, looked younger and carried a small notebook.

“Who called?”” Reynolds asked.

“I did,” Daniel answered.

He stepped forward before anyone else could speak.

“My father attacked my wife upstairs. She fought him off, and I intervened.””

Reynolds looked at me.

“Sir, is that what happened?””

“No.””

“Did you touch your daughter-in-law?””

“No.””

“Did you threaten her?””

“No.””

Daniel threw his hands into the air.

“She's sitting right there with her blouse torn apart! What more do you need?””

Officer Patel turned toward him.

“Sir, we need to hear everyone's account separately.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“My wife is the victim here.””

“And we're going to speak with her,” Reynolds replied.

“But you need to give us room to do our jobs.””

Mia sat on the sofa, her hair hanging loosely around her face. She had replaced her torn blouse with a gray sweater. Her children were upstairs with Claire's phone, watching cartoons because Claire had told them the adults needed privacy.

Reynolds crouched in front of Mia.

“Mrs. Harrison, can you tell me what happened?””

Mia looked down at her hands.

“Your father-in-law followed me upstairs,” she said quietly.

“He said he wanted to talk.””

“About what?””

“I don't know. He came closer, and I asked him to stop. Then he grabbed me.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“That never happened.””

Reynolds lifted one hand.

“Mr. Harrison, I'll hear your account in a moment.””

Mia continued.

“I tried to get away. He wouldn't let me. I was terrified.””

Officer Patel wrote something in her notebook.

“Did he strike you?””

“No.””

“Did he make any specific threats?””

Mia hesitated.

Then she looked directly at me.

“He said I would regret what I knew.””

My stomach tightened.

“What you knew about what?”” Reynolds asked.

Mia lowered her eyes.

“I can't talk about that.””

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“She doesn't have to explain herself to you.””

Reynolds stood.

“Mr. Harrison, please sit down.””

Daniel didn't move.

“I'm trying to protect my wife.””

“And I'm trying to investigate an allegation. Sit down.””

Daniel reluctantly lowered himself into an armchair.

I looked at Mia.

“What secret are you talking about?””

She began crying again.

Officer Patel asked me to move into the kitchen so she could take my statement privately.

I followed her, feeling every year of my seventy-year-old body as I walked. My cheek throbbed. My knees ached. My hands wouldn't stop shaking.

She sat at the kitchen table, beneath the pendant light Margaret had chosen decades earlier.

“Start from the beginning,” she said.

So I did.

I told her about the dinner, Mia standing beside the window, her sudden panic, the ripped blouse, and the scream.

I told her about the camera.

At that, Patel looked up.

“You have a camera covering the hallway?””

“Yes.””

“Does it record continuously?””

“It records motion. The footage is stored on a small recorder in my study.””

“Does anyone else have access?””

“My son helped me set up the system when I bought it.””

She paused.

“Does your daughter-in-law?””

“I don't know.””

That was the first time the thought had occurred to me.

Daniel had installed the application on my phone. He had configured the cameras and shown me how to review recordings. I trusted him because he was my son.

Officer Patel asked whether I would consent to her viewing the footage.

“Of course.””

She stood.

“Please don't access or alter the recording until we've documented it.””

I nodded.

Before she left the kitchen, she looked at me with an expression I couldn't quite interpret.

“Mr. Harrison, if the footage supports your account, it could be very important.””

“If?””

“We have to consider all the evidence.””

She returned to the living room.

I stayed where I was, staring at the kitchen clock.

At 7:14 p.m., I had walked upstairs to retrieve a photo album.

At 7:19 p.m., my son had struck me.

Five minutes.

That was all it had taken for my family to become strangers.

A few minutes later, Claire came into the kitchen.

She shut the door behind her.

“Dad, are you okay?””

“I've had better evenings.””

She tried to smile, but her eyes filled with tears.

“I'm sorry.””

“You didn't do anything.””

“I should have stopped him.””

“You tried.””

She sat beside me and took my hand.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she asked, “Did Mia say anything to you before she started screaming?””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because when I reached the top of the stairs, she was looking at the camera.””

I frowned.

“You noticed that?””

“Yes.””

“What do you mean?””

Claire rubbed her forehead.

“I don't know. I thought she was looking at you. But now I remember her eyes kept moving toward that little black box.””

A chill passed through me.

“Claire, do you know something about this?””

“No.”” She answered too quickly, then shook her head.

“No, Dad. I don't.””

I wanted to believe her.

She was my daughter. She had inherited Margaret's honesty, or so I had always told myself.

But that evening had taught me how easily a familiar face could conceal something ugly.

When Claire returned to the living room, I walked to my study.

The door was open.

My desktop computer was awake, and the security system's monitor displayed the hallway camera in a small preview window.

I had not left it on.

I moved closer.

The recording indicator was blinking red.

Then I noticed something else.

The clock displayed on the security system was five minutes behind the clock on my phone.

I had never noticed the discrepancy before.

I clicked the menu, but stopped when I remembered Officer Patel's instructions.

I wouldn't touch the recordings.

Instead, I took out my phone and called my neighbor, Robert Ellis. He was a retired attorney who had lived three houses down for twenty-two years. Margaret had trusted him with our spare keys, and he had helped me settle her estate.

He answered on the fourth ring.

“Thomas? It's late for you to be calling.””

“I need some advice.””

“What's happened?””

“My daughter-in-law has accused me of attacking her. The police are here.””

His tone changed instantly.

“Are you hurt?””

“My son hit me. My cheek is bruised, but I'll survive.””

“Thomas, listen to me. Don't argue with anyone. Don't delete anything. If there's evidence, let the police preserve it.””

“I have a security camera.””

“Good. Tell them immediately.””

“I already have.””

There was a pause.

Then Robert asked, “Was Daniel there when it happened?””

“Yes.””

“And he believes her?””

“He slapped me before asking a single question.””

Robert exhaled slowly.

“Stay calm. I'll come over.””

When I returned to the living room, Officer Reynolds was speaking to Daniel near the fireplace.

Mia had stopped crying.

She was watching her husband.

“Mr. Harrison,” Reynolds said, “we're going to review the available footage. In the meantime, I need everyone to remain here while we complete our initial interviews.””

Daniel folded his arms.

“Fine.””

Mia looked at him.

“Daniel, maybe we should leave.””

“Leave?”” He stared at her.

“My father attacked you. We're not leaving until the police understand what happened.””

She pressed her lips together.

Reynolds noticed.

“Mrs. Harrison, is there a reason you don't want the footage reviewed?””

Mia looked down.

“No.””

“Earlier, you said something about not watching the camera.””

She swallowed.

“I was upset.””

“Upset enough to ask your husband not to look at evidence that could establish what happened?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“She was frightened. You're making this sound suspicious when it's perfectly normal for a victim to be afraid.””

“I'm asking a question,” Reynolds said.

“And I'm answering it.””

“No, Mr. Harrison. You're interrupting.””

The silence that followed was so complete that I could hear the refrigerator humming in the kitchen.

Then the doorbell rang.

Robert stood on the porch in his dark overcoat.

When he entered and saw my swollen cheek, his expression hardened.

“Thomas,” he said, coming directly to me, “tell me exactly what happened.””

Before I could answer, Daniel moved between us.

“This is a family matter.””

Robert looked at him.

“Then why did you call the police?””

Daniel's face flushed.

Robert turned to Officer Reynolds.

“I'm a retired attorney. Mr. Harrison asked me to come, and I would like to remain present while he discusses his rights and the evidence.””

Reynolds nodded.

“That's fine, provided you don't interfere with the investigation.””

Robert sat beside me.

He listened without interrupting while I described the evening. When I finished, he asked one question.

“Thomas, did you ever change the security system's password?””

“No. Daniel set it up.””

Robert slowly turned toward my son.

“Daniel, do you still have administrative access to the cameras?””

Daniel's expression became unreadable.

“Why does that matter?””

“Because if you do, we need to establish who could access or modify the footage.””

“I haven't touched Dad's cameras in months.””

Robert held his gaze.

“Then you won't mind the police checking the access logs.””

Daniel opened his mouth, then closed it.

For the first time that night, he looked less angry than afraid.

Officer Reynolds asked me to lead him to the study.

I opened the door and stepped aside.

He examined the recorder, photographed its connections, and called for a technician to help preserve the relevant files.

While he worked, Officer Patel returned to the living room to speak with Mia again.

I couldn't hear their entire conversation, but one sentence carried into the hallway.

“Mrs. Harrison, if you believe Mr. Harrison threatened you because of something you discovered, we need to know what that something was.””

Mia said nothing.

Then Daniel spoke.

“She doesn't owe you her private information.””

Patel answered, “If the information is relevant to the allegation, she does.””

I stood in the study doorway, watching the technician connect a small drive to the recorder.

The screen filled with timestamps.

There was the dining room camera, the front porch camera, the staircase camera, and the hallway camera.

The technician checked the hallway feed.

“It's still recording,” he said.

“We'll need to export the footage from before and after the reported incident.””

“Can you tell whether anything has been altered?”” Reynolds asked.

“Not yet. I'll need to inspect the logs.””

Daniel appeared behind them.

“Do we really need to make this such a production?””

Reynolds turned.

“Mr. Harrison, please return to the living room.””

“I'm asking a reasonable question.””

“And I'm giving you a reasonable instruction.””

Daniel left.

The technician worked for another ten minutes before straightening.

“I've found something unusual.””

Every person in the study turned toward him.

“What?”” I asked.

He pointed to the screen.

“The system shows a remote administrator login earlier this evening. Someone accessed the recorder and changed a setting shortly before the incident.””

Daniel had gone completely still in the doorway.

Robert stepped closer.

“Can you identify the account?””

The technician clicked twice.

A username appeared.

It wasn't mine.

It wasn't Robert's.

It belonged to the administrator account Daniel had created when he installed the cameras.

Officer Reynolds looked at my son.

“Mr. Harrison, you told us you hadn't accessed the system in months.””

Daniel swallowed.

“I didn't say I couldn't have logged in accidentally.””

“Accidentally?””

“I might have opened the application on my phone.””

The technician shook his head.

“This wasn't simply opening the application. An administrator setting was changed.””

Reynolds leaned toward the screen.

“Which setting?””

The technician hesitated.

May you like

Then he looked at me.

“The setting that controls whether the system retains deleted footage.””
