Chapter 4: The Woman in the Inheritance

For several seconds, Vanessa didn't move.

The note on Richard's phone seemed to have drained every drop of color from her face.

Mark stared at her.

"What does that mean?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"I don't know.""

"Don't lie to me.""

She looked toward the ballroom doors.

Richard noticed.

"Nobody leaves until we understand why your name appears in a twenty-three-year-old inheritance document.""

Vanessa let out a nervous laugh.

"You're all making a mistake. I was barely an adult when Thomas Callahan died. I didn't even know him.""

Margaret slowly stood.

"Then why did my husband specifically mention you?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I can't answer that.""

"Try.""

"I can't!""

Her voice cracked.

Oliver began crying again.

"Mommy, I want to go home.""

Vanessa crouched and brushed his hair away from his forehead.

"It's all right, sweetheart.""

Emma watched them.

"Mom, look at Oliver.""

I turned.

The little boy was wearing a small silver bracelet. I had seen it before, but never paid attention to it.

A tiny engraving ran along the inside.

T.C.

Emma stepped closer.

"Where did he get that?""

Vanessa immediately covered the bracelet with her hand.

"It's a family gift.""

Margaret's face changed.

"Where did you get that bracelet?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

Margaret approached slowly.

"That belonged to Thomas.""

Vanessa's fingers tightened.

"He gave it to me.""

The words fell into the room like broken glass.

Mark turned toward her.

"What?""

Vanessa looked at him.

"I was going to tell you.""

"Tell me what?""

"Your father gave it to me.""

Margaret grabbed the back of a chair.

"Why would my husband give you his personal bracelet?""

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"Because he knew me.""

"How?""

She looked at Mark.

Then back at Margaret.

"Because I was his daughter.""

Nobody moved.

I heard someone drop a fork near the far table.

Mark stared at Vanessa as though she had suddenly become a stranger.

"That's impossible.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"My mother worked for your father for years. She was his personal assistant before he became seriously ill.""

Margaret's face turned white.

"Your mother was Eleanor Reed?""

Vanessa nodded.

Margaret slowly sat down.

"Oh, my God.""

Mark stepped backward.

"You're telling me you're my father's daughter?""

"Half-sister," Vanessa whispered.

"How long have you known?""

"Since I was seventeen.""

Mark laughed bitterly.

"And you waited until now to tell me?""

"I didn't know how.""

"You slept with me!""

Vanessa flinched.

"Mark—"

"You knew who I was!""

"I knew who your father was. I didn't know what kind of man you were until later.""

He stared at her.

"You let me believe you were just some assistant.""

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

"Because I wanted a life that wasn't defined by your family.""

Margaret pressed her hand against her mouth.

"Thomas had another child.""

Vanessa nodded.

"He never publicly acknowledged me. He paid for my education, helped my mother buy a house, and gave me that bracelet when I graduated.""

Margaret looked at the bracelet.

"Why didn't he tell me?""

Vanessa's voice dropped.

"Because he was afraid.""

"Afraid of what?""

"Of losing everything.""

Margaret shook her head.

"Thomas wasn't afraid of anyone.""

Vanessa gave a sad smile.

"You didn't know everything about him.""

Richard interrupted.

"That still doesn't explain the inheritance.""

Vanessa looked at the floor.

"Thomas created the account because he knew something was wrong with the company.""

"What was wrong?"" I asked.

She hesitated.

"Mark's father discovered that someone had been moving money out of the business for years.""

Richard opened his folder.

"Who?""

Vanessa looked at Mark.

"He suspected his own son.""

Mark exploded.

"That's a lie!""

She didn't look away.

"He told my mother that Mark had started using company accounts when he was barely twenty-five.""

"Shut up!""

"He said he was afraid Mark would eventually destroy the company.""

Mark grabbed the edge of the table.

"You're inventing stories because you know your name is on the account!""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I'm telling them what I know.""

Margaret's eyes filled.

"Did Thomas know you were his daughter?""

"Yes.""

"Did he love you?""

Vanessa looked at her.

"Yes.""

Margaret closed her eyes.

For a moment, the seventy-five-year-old woman looked less like the powerful matriarch of Callahan Global and more like a wife discovering that twenty years of her marriage contained a secret she could never recover.

Richard cleared his throat.

"There's a practical question we need to address. Why would Thomas name Emma as the primary beneficiary and Vanessa as the secondary beneficiary?""

Vanessa answered quietly.

"Because he wanted to protect both of us.""

"From whom?""

She looked at Mark.

"From his son.""

Mark slammed his palm against the table.

"That's enough!""

Emma stepped forward.

"You keep saying that whenever someone tells the truth.""

He turned toward her.

"Emma, this has gone too far.""

"No. You went too far when you stole my inheritance.""

Mark's face tightened.

"You're sixteen. You don't understand money.""

"I understand that you took it.""

"That account was complicated.""

"It was mine.""

"You don't even know what you're talking about!""

Emma raised her phone.

"I know you withdrew $6,988,538. I know the money went through three companies. I know the last transfer was made two years ago.""

Richard looked at her.

"You have the complete transaction history?""

Emma nodded.

"Almost.""

"Almost?""

She looked toward Vanessa.

"There's one transfer I couldn't trace.""

Vanessa's expression changed.

"What transfer?""

Emma opened the spreadsheet.

"Four hundred thousand dollars. It was sent to an account in London under the name Eleanor Reed.""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Richard looked at her.

"Your mother?""

She nodded.

"She received the money before she died.""

Margaret gripped her chair.

"Why?""

Vanessa's voice became barely audible.

"Because my mother had been trying to tell Thomas something.""

"What?""

Vanessa looked at Mark.

"She knew what happened to his first son.""

The words struck me strangely.

His first son?

Mark was Thomas's only publicly recognized son.

Margaret looked confused.

"What first son?""

Vanessa opened her handbag.

She removed a small photograph.

It showed Thomas standing outside a hospital, holding a newborn baby.

A young woman stood beside him.

I recognized her immediately.

Eleanor Reed.

And written on the back were four words.

Our son. Daniel. 1999.

Margaret stared.

"Thomas had a son before Mark?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes.""

Mark shook his head.

"That's impossible.""

Vanessa looked at him.

"Daniel was my older brother.""

Richard examined the photograph.

"Where is he now?""

Vanessa's lips trembled.

"I don't know.""

"Why?""

"Because he disappeared when he was three months old.""

The ballroom seemed to shrink around us.

Margaret whispered, "Disappeared?""

Vanessa nodded.

"My mother said Thomas arranged for him to be raised by another family. She was told it was temporary.""

"And?""

"He never came back.""

Mark looked furious.

"You're telling me my father had another son, and you expect me to believe he was kidnapped?""

Vanessa looked directly at him.

"I don't know what happened to Daniel. But my mother believed someone in this family knew.""

Richard folded the photograph carefully.

"Where did you get this?""

"My mother's things.""

"Why didn't you show it to the police?""

"Because she told me not to.""

"Why?""

Vanessa looked toward the doors.

"She said the person responsible was still watching.""

Richard immediately turned toward the security guards.

"Nobody touches any of these documents. I want the original files preserved.""

Then he looked at Margaret.

"Tomorrow morning, we're contacting the police and the trust's forensic investigators.""

Margaret nodded.

"Do whatever is necessary.""

Mark laughed.

"You're all insane.""

He grabbed his coat.

"I am leaving.""

Richard stepped aside but held up a hand.

"Your personal belongings are yours. But I strongly advise you not to contact anyone involved in the investigation.""

Mark glared at him.

"You can't give me orders.""

"No. The court can.""

Mark turned toward me.

"Claire, come with me.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

"We're going home. We need to discuss this.""

"Our home?""

He frowned.

"Yes.""

I slowly shook my head.

"I don't think you understand. I don't know what home means anymore when I'm married to you.""

His voice dropped.

"You'll regret this.""

"Maybe. But I won't regret protecting Emma.""

He looked at our daughter.

Then at Vanessa.

Finally, he walked toward the doors.

Vanessa remained behind.

She approached me carefully.

"Claire, there's something you need to know.""

I didn't answer.

She glanced at Emma.

"Not here.""

Emma folded her arms.

"Why not?""

Vanessa looked at her.

"Because it's about your grandfather.""

Richard stepped forward.

"Whatever it is, you can tell us now.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"Your grandfather didn't leave seven million dollars for Emma because he wanted to be generous.""

Margaret looked up.

"Then why?""

Vanessa reached into her handbag again.

This time, she removed a small envelope with a hospital logo.

She placed it in Richard's hand.

"Because Thomas knew Daniel was alive.""

She paused.

"And he knew where he was.""

Richard opened the envelope.

Inside was a hospital photograph.

A young man in his twenties stood beside a medical bed.

On the back, someone had written a name.

*Daniel Callahan.*

Beneath it was a date.

Three weeks before Thomas died.

Tell Margaret the truth before Mark finds him.
