Chapter 10: The Truth That Could Never Be Buried
“Bring the document, Mr. Carter. And come prepared to learn why your wife died.””
The call ended.
Darius stood in the middle of his father's study, staring at his phone while the last words echoed in his head.
Kayla had heard someone claiming to be Olivia.
His dead wife.
The woman he had buried four years ago.
“That's impossible,” he whispered.
Philip closed the laptop.
“Darius, we need to consider every possibility. Someone could be impersonating Olivia, or the caller could be deliberately manipulating Kayla.””
“But how would they know what Olivia sounded like?””
“Her voice was on the recording. They could have used it.””
Darius shook his head.
“No. Kayla said the woman told her she knew Mommy. That could mean anything.””
Brittany sat rigidly on the edge of the sofa, clutching her hands together.
“There's something I haven't told you.””
Darius turned toward her.
“Then this would be an excellent time to start telling the truth.””
Brittany swallowed.
“Two weeks before Olivia died, I received a photograph from an unknown number. It showed a woman standing outside a pharmacy. She had Olivia's face, her hair, everything.””
Darius felt his stomach tighten.
“What did you do?””
“I called Olivia. She told me it was an old photograph and that I shouldn't worry about it.””
“Did you believe her?””
“No.””
Brittany looked at the floor.
“Because the photograph was taken the day before I received it.””
Silence filled the room.
Philip leaned forward.
“Did you keep the photograph?””
Brittany nodded.
She opened her handbag and removed a small envelope. Inside was a photograph of a woman walking toward a black sedan outside a pharmacy.
The woman looked exactly like Olivia.
Same dark hair. Same delicate nose. Same small scar near her left eyebrow.
Darius knew that scar. Olivia had received it as a teenager when she fell from a bicycle.
He took the photograph with shaking hands.
“When was this taken?””
“October 14,” Brittany whispered.
Darius looked at Philip.
“That was four years ago. Olivia died on October 16.””
Philip examined the image.
“Did you ever investigate it?””
“I tried. The pharmacy's security cameras had been replaced, and the manager claimed he didn't recognize the woman.””
Darius stared at the photograph.
“If Olivia was alive on October 14, then who died in that accident?””
Neither of them answered.
Then Philip spoke.
“There's one way to find out.””
He opened his laptop and searched through the recovered files.
“The accident report included dental identification. If we can obtain the original forensic records and compare them with Olivia's medical records, we can establish whether the body was correctly identified.””
“Then do it.””
“I'll contact the medical examiner.””
“No.”” Darius grabbed his coat.
“I'm going to the railway station.””
Philip stood.
“You cannot go alone.””
“I won't. The police will maintain a perimeter, but nobody approaches until we know Kayla is safe.””
Brittany rose unsteadily.
“I'm coming with you.””
Darius looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because if Grace is there, she'll need someone she recognizes.””
“You mean her biological mother?””
Brittany winced.
“I mean someone who loves her.””
Darius wanted to tell her that love did not erase what she had done to Kayla.
Instead, he handed her the photograph of Olivia.
“Tell me something. When you received this, why didn't you show it to me?””
Brittany's eyes filled.
“Because Richard called me that night. He told me Olivia had been involved in a dangerous investigation and that I should stop asking questions. He said if I told you anything, Kayla would pay the price.””
“And you believed him.””
“Yes.””
“You let fear make every decision for you.””
“I know.””
Darius turned toward the door.
“Then tonight, you can make one decision that matters. Help me bring the children home.””
They left the mansion shortly before midnight.
Two unmarked police vehicles followed at a distance. Philip stayed behind to coordinate with the authorities and obtain the original accident records.
The old railway station stood at the edge of the city, its brick walls stained by decades of rain. The passenger platforms had been abandoned years earlier, but a freight line still ran behind the building.
Darius parked near the entrance.
Brittany stared through the windshield.
“I haven't been here since I was a child.””
“Why did they choose this place?””
“Richard used to bring me here when I visited him. He said the station reminded him that every journey eventually reached its destination.””
Darius looked at her.
“Your uncle had a strange idea of comfort.””
“He had strange ideas about everything.””
They stepped into the cold night.
A single light burned above the main entrance.
Darius carried a folder containing the recovered documents. He had not brought the original birth certificate because nobody had yet located it. Instead, he carried a certified copy of Olivia's final medical records and a document Philip had discovered in the safe.
It contained Richard's signature and a handwritten note:
If Darius ever discovers the truth, give him the original certificate. He deserves to know what happened to his children.
His children.
Plural.
Darius felt a familiar knot tighten in his stomach.
A figure emerged from the shadows.
“Mr. Carter.””
Marjorie Wells stepped into the light.
She held Kayla's hand.
The little girl wore a pale yellow sweater and clutched her stuffed rabbit. Her cheeks were wet, but she appeared physically unharmed.
“Daddy!””
Darius rushed forward.
Marjorie released Kayla, and the child ran into his arms.
He dropped to his knees and held her tightly.
“I'm here, princess. I've got you.””
Kayla wrapped her arms around his neck.
“I knew you'd come.””
Darius pressed his face into her hair—or what remained of it—and fought back tears.
“I'm sorry I wasn't there sooner.””
“It's okay, Daddy.””
“No, sweetheart. It's not.””
He held her until she began to relax.
Then he examined her carefully.
“Did anyone hurt you?””
She shook her head.
“Did anyone scare you?””
Kayla hesitated.
“A little.””
Darius looked toward Marjorie.
“What did you do to her?””
“Nothing,” Marjorie replied.
“I brought her here because the person who sent the message wanted you to come.””
“Who?””
Marjorie looked beyond him.
A woman's voice answered from the darkness.
“Me.””
Darius stopped breathing.
A woman stepped onto the platform.
She wore a dark coat and carried no bag. Her hair was shorter than he remembered, and there were faint lines around her eyes that had not been there four years earlier.
But the scar near her left eyebrow was unmistakable.
Olivia.
Darius stared at her.
The woman began to cry.
“Hello, Darius.””
He couldn't move.
Kayla lifted her head from his shoulder.
“Daddy, that's Mommy.””
The world seemed to stop.
Darius looked down at his daughter, then back at the woman standing beneath the station light.
“No,” he whispered.
Olivia took one step forward.
“I know you have every reason to hate me.””
Darius rose slowly, keeping Kayla behind him.
“You're dead.””
“I know.””
“I buried you.””
“I know.””
“I watched them lower your coffin into the ground.””
Olivia's tears fell faster.
“The coffin was sealed.””
Darius shook his head.
“Don't.””
“Darius—”
“DON'T SAY MY NAME!””
His voice echoed through the empty station.
Kayla clung to his coat.
He immediately lowered his voice.
“I'm sorry, baby.””
Then he turned back to Olivia.
“You let me believe you were dead for four years. You let your daughter grow up believing her mother had abandoned her.””
Olivia covered her mouth.
“I never stopped loving her.””
“Love?”” Darius's voice broke.
“Do you have any idea what those four years did to us?””
“Yes.””
“No, you don't. You weren't there when she cried herself to sleep. You weren't there when she asked why other children had mothers and she didn't. You weren't there when she begged me to promise that nobody would ever leave her again.””
Olivia began sobbing.
“I heard you.””
Darius went still.
“What?””
“I heard you at the funeral. I was there.””
He stared at her.
“How?””
Olivia looked toward Marjorie.
“Because the body in that coffin wasn't mine.””
Darius felt Kayla's small hand tighten around his.
Olivia continued.
“Richard discovered that I had found the original birth records. He knew I was going to the police. He arranged for someone to intercept me on the highway.””
“Who?””
“I never saw his face. Another car forced mine off the road. I escaped before it caught fire.””
Darius's mouth went dry.
“What about the body?””
“The other driver was a woman who had been working for Richard's security company. She died in the crash. Richard arranged for the identification records to be altered so the authorities would believe it was me.””
“And you let him?””
“I didn't have a choice. He threatened Kayla. He told me that if I appeared alive, he would have her taken away and make sure nobody ever found her.””
Darius looked at Marjorie.
“Is this true?””
Marjorie nodded.
“I helped Olivia disappear. I thought it was the only way to keep her alive.””
“You helped her abandon her child.””
“I helped her survive.””
Olivia stepped closer.
“I wanted to come home every day. I wrote letters. I sent photographs. I tried to find a way to contact you without putting Kayla at risk.””
“Where are those letters?””
“Marjorie kept them.””
Darius turned.
“Where?””
Marjorie lowered her eyes.
“In a storage unit outside Boston.””
“Why didn't you give them to me?””
“Because Olivia believed Richard had people watching you. She was afraid they would discover the letters and realize she was alive.””
Darius laughed bitterly.
“And you thought it was better to let me mourn my wife?””
Olivia flinched.
“No decision I made was good. I know that. I told myself I was protecting Kayla, but I was also afraid. I was afraid that if I came back, Richard would finish what he started.””
Darius looked at the woman he had loved.
For four years, he had imagined a thousand different conversations with her. He had imagined what he would say if he could see her one more time.
None of those imagined conversations had prepared him for the reality.
“Why now?”” he asked.
Olivia wiped her face.
“Because Richard is dead, and the person who has been controlling the trust has started moving again. Someone is using the old documents to take control of Carter Global. They wanted Kayla out of the way because she is the legal beneficiary.””
“And Grace?””
Olivia's expression changed.
“Grace is my biological daughter. Brittany carried her as a surrogate. Richard arranged the entire procedure without telling either of us the full truth.””
Brittany stepped forward.
“I was told Grace was going to be my daughter.””
Olivia nodded sadly.
“I know.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I didn't know how much Richard had lied to you until after Grace was born.””
Brittany's face crumpled.
“I have spent four years searching for her.””
“And I've spent four years trying to keep her alive.””
For a moment, the two women simply stared at one another.
Then Olivia turned toward Darius.
“There is one more truth you need to know.””
He felt his stomach tighten.
“What?””
Olivia looked at Kayla.
“Your daughter was never part of Richard's original plan. He wanted Grace to inherit the company. But when Kayla was born, he realized that the existing trust gave her a stronger legal claim. He tried to alter the records to make it appear that Kayla's inheritance could be challenged.””
Darius shook his head.
“You're saying he tried to erase his own granddaughter?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he believed that whoever controlled the children could control the company.””
Darius looked at Kayla.
She was watching Olivia with wide, uncertain eyes.
“Are you really my mommy?”” she whispered.
Olivia fell to her knees.
“Yes, sweetheart.””
“Then why didn't you come home?””
Olivia reached toward her, then stopped, allowing Kayla to decide whether she wanted to approach.
“Because I was afraid that someone would hurt you.””
Kayla studied her.
“Did you miss me?””
Olivia broke down.
“Every single day.””
Kayla took one small step forward.
Then another.
She stopped just in front of Olivia.
“Grandma says people who love you always come back.””
Olivia looked at Darius, tears streaming down her face.
Kayla continued.
“Were you trying to come back?””
Olivia nodded.
“Yes, baby. I was.””
Kayla hesitated, then reached out and touched her mother's cheek.
“You look sad.””
“I am.””
“Don't be sad.””
Olivia gathered her daughter into her arms, sobbing quietly against her shoulder.
Darius watched them.
His heart ached with a mixture of relief, fury, and grief.
Olivia was alive.
His daughter had her mother back.
But the truth was still incomplete.
He looked at Marjorie.
“Who sent the messages? Who has been trying to take Kayla?””
Marjorie's expression hardened.
“The person who inherited Richard's private security operation.””
“Who?””
She opened her handbag and removed a final document.
A corporate ownership transfer.
The signature at the bottom belonged to Philip Grant.
Darius stared at it.
“No.””
Marjorie nodded.
“Philip has been working for Richard's operation since before Olivia died. He helped alter the records, arranged the false death certificate, and maintained control of the trust after Richard's death.””
Darius felt the blood drain from his face.
His attorney.
His father's trusted adviser.
The man who had supposedly been helping him uncover the truth.
He looked toward the road.
The police vehicles were still parked at the end of the station, their headlights illuminating the entrance.
But Philip was nowhere to be seen.
Darius took out his phone.
He called the security chief.
“Where is Philip?””
The answer came immediately.
“Mr. Carter, he left the mansion twenty minutes ago. He took the original files from your father's study.””
Darius looked at the document in Marjorie's hand.
Then at Olivia.
The woman he had mourned was alive. The child he had thought was dead had never disappeared. And the man he had trusted to help him find the truth had been stealing it from him all along.
“Get every officer to the station,” Darius ordered.
“Philip Grant is not to leave the city.””
He ended the call.
Olivia rose slowly, keeping Kayla close.
“Darius, there's something else.””
He looked at her.
“What now?””
She glanced at the corporate transfer document.
“Philip wasn't working for Richard.””
Darius frowned.
“What do you mean?””
Olivia's voice dropped.
“Richard was working for him.””
Before Darius could respond, a gunshot cracked across the railway yard.
Marjorie screamed.
Olivia pulled Kayla behind her.
Darius threw himself over both of them as another shot struck the brick wall.
Across the platform, a black sedan sped toward the exit.
Through the rear window, Darius caught a glimpse of a man sitting in the back seat.
Philip Grant.
The sedan disappeared into the darkness.
And in the moment before the police sirens filled the station, Darius understood that the man who had controlled his family's secrets for four years had just escaped with the one document that could prove everything.
The original birth certificate.
May you like
The document that could finally reveal who had ordered Olivia's death.
And who had been waiting all these years to claim the Carter empire.
