Chapter 5: The Woman Behind the Name
“Ethan, you should have listened.””
The man's voice came through the emergency speakers again.
Then silence.
The ballroom erupted.
Someone screamed near the bar.
A glass shattered.
Chairs scraped violently across the floor as guests stumbled toward the exits.
For one frozen second, I couldn't see anything.
Then the emergency lights flickered on.
Dim red strips along the floor.
My mother's hand was still gripping my arm.
“Ashley,” she said.
Ashley hadn't moved.
She was staring at the ceiling speaker.
Her lips were trembling.
“Do you know that voice?”” I asked.
She shook her head.
“No.””
My mother answered instead.
“I do.””
I turned toward her.
Mom's face had gone completely white.
“Who is it?””
She looked around at the terrified guests.
“Not here.””
“Mom, who is it?””
She lowered her voice.
“Caleb Voss.””
The name meant nothing to me.
“Who?””
“My grandfather's former security director.””
I stared at her.
“I thought Grandpa fired him.””
“He did.””
“When?””
“Two months before he died.””
“Why?””
Mom hesitated.
“Because he found out Caleb had been accessing private records.””
My eyes moved toward Ashley.
She looked sick.
“Your mother knew him,” Ashley whispered.
Mom's head snapped toward her.
“Don't.””
Ashley flinched.
“You said he was dead.””
“I said nothing of the kind.””
Ashley looked at me.
“Ryan told me Caleb was dead.””
“Ryan knows Caleb?””
“I don't know.””
“Then how do you know his name?””
“I heard it once.””
“Where?””
She didn't answer.
I stepped toward her.
“Ashley.””
She raised both hands.
“I swear I don't know what is happening.””
A deep thud came from somewhere beyond the ballroom doors.
Then another.
The lights flickered.
Guests started shouting again.
A waiter ran toward us.
“Mr. Walker, the main doors aren't opening.””
“What?””
“They're locked.””
“Get security.””
“They're trying.””
“Call the police.””
The waiter looked terrified.
“The phones aren't working.””
My mother turned to me.
“We need to go to the old house.””
I stared at her.
“With everyone here?””
“No.””
“With Ashley?””
Mom looked at her.
“No.””
Ashley stepped forward.
“I'm coming.””
“No,” Mom said.
Ashley stiffened.
“You don't get to decide that.””
Mom looked at her with an expression so cold it silenced her.
“You should be the last person near that house.””
“Why?””
“Because the last time you went there, someone opened the gate for you.””
Ashley swallowed.
“You knew?””
“I knew someone had entered.””
“Then why didn't you ask me?””
“Because my father warned me not to trust anyone connected to the Morgan family.””
Ashley looked wounded.
“You think I'm my mother?””
“I think you are capable of making choices that hurt my son.””
Ashley looked at me.
“Ethan.””
I couldn't answer.
There were too many questions.
Too many contradictions.
Then another sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
Someone was walking toward us.
Everyone went quiet.
A figure appeared at the end of the corridor.
A man in a dark suit.
He stopped beneath the emergency light.
He looked older than I expected.
Gray hair.
Narrow face.
A scar running from his left temple to his cheek.
He held a black handgun loosely at his side.
A woman screamed.
My mother stepped in front of me.
“Caleb.””
The man smiled.
“Diane.””
Security finally appeared from the opposite corridor.
Two guards raised their radios.
“Put the weapon down!””
Caleb laughed.
“You still think this is about the weapon?””
The guards froze.
He looked past my mother.
His eyes settled on Ashley.
“Ashley Morgan.””
She backed away.
“Don't.””
He smiled.
“Your mother sent you here.””
“No.””
“She did.””
“No.””
“Then why did you marry him?””
Ashley said nothing.
Caleb looked at me.
“She didn't marry you for love.””
I stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
“Your grandfather trusted me.””
“My grandfather fired you.””
“He tried.””
Mom's voice was sharp.
“You betrayed him.””
Caleb looked amused.
“Did I?””
“You stole from him.””
“I took back what he stole first.””
My mother went pale.
“What does that mean?””
Caleb's smile disappeared.
“You know exactly what it means.””
I looked between them.
“What did Grandpa steal?””
Neither answered.
Caleb lifted his gun slightly.
“Ask your mother.””
Mom's face hardened.
“Leave my son out of this.””
“He's already in it.””
Caleb looked at me.
“Your grandfather built his fortune on a lie.””
That sentence hit differently.
All my life, I'd been told my grandfather was a hard businessman.
Ambitious.
Brilliant.
Relentless.
But honest.
Caleb continued.
“Your family didn't create that fortune.””
He nodded toward Ashley.
“They took it.””
Ashley whispered, “No.””
Caleb smiled at her.
“Your mother knows.””
Mom stepped forward.
“That's enough.””
Caleb pointed the gun toward the ceiling.
“One more word from you and I'll explain everything to the guests.””
The ballroom went silent.
I could hear people breathing.
I stepped in front of Mom.
“Tell me.””
Caleb looked at me.
“Your grandfather and Ashley's mother were partners.””
Mom closed her eyes.
“Don't.””
Caleb continued.
“They built a company together.””
“What company?””
“Agricultural land investments.””
I stared at my mother.
“That doesn't make sense.””
“It was before you were born,” Mom said.
“Then why didn't I know?””
“Because your grandfather erased her.””
Ashley whispered, “He erased my mother?””
Caleb nodded.
“He took control of the company and transferred the assets into his own name.””
Mom's voice shook.
“That isn't what happened.””
“Then tell him what did.””
She couldn't.
I looked at her.
“Mom?””
Her eyes met mine.
“There was a legal dispute.””
“Over what?””
“Ownership.””
“And?””
“He won.””
Caleb laughed.
“Because he paid the right people.””
The room seemed to shrink around me.
“Is that true?””
Mom didn't answer.
“Mom.””
She whispered, “I don't know everything.””
“You were there.””
“Yes.””
“With Grandpa?””
“Yes.””
“And Ashley's mother?””
“Yes.””
Ashley stepped forward.
“You knew my mother?””
Mom looked at her.
“I knew her.””
“What happened to her?””
Mom hesitated.
“She disappeared.””
Ashley shook her head.
“She didn't disappear.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
Ashley looked at me.
“My mother is alive.””
Mom stared at her.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“How do you know?””
“Because she called me last year.””
Mom's breathing changed.
“What did she say?””
Ashley wiped her cheek.
“She told me to marry you.””
The room went completely still.
I felt like I had been punched.
“My mother told me that if I ever wanted to get back what belonged to our family, I needed to become part of yours.””
Mom whispered, “Oh God.””
I stared at Ashley.
“That's why you approached me?””
“No.””
“Did she tell you to date me?””
“No.””
“Did she?””
Ashley closed her eyes.
“She didn't at first.””
“What happened?””
“I met you at the fundraiser.””
“The charity gala?””
She nodded.
“I didn't know who you were.””
“But later you found out.””
“Yes.””
“And stayed.””
Tears slipped down her cheeks.
“I fell in love with you.””
“Did you?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you investigate my family?””
“Because she told me to.””
I couldn't speak.
Caleb lowered his weapon.
For the first time, he looked almost tired.
“She wasn't supposed to marry you,” he said.
I turned.
“What?””
“She was supposed to get close to you.””
Ashley looked at him.
“Stop.””
“But then she made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
Caleb looked directly at me.
“She got pregnant.””
Ashley began crying.
I felt suddenly cold.
“And that changed everything?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because a child gives her something your grandfather never expected.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Blood.””
My mother stepped forward.
“Caleb, enough.””
He ignored her.
“Your grandfather's trust has a succession clause.””
I looked at Mom.
She knew.
“What clause?””
She whispered, “Descendants.””
My heartbeat accelerated.
Caleb nodded.
“If Ethan has a child, certain dormant assets become active.””
I looked at Ashley.
She looked terrified.
“Meaning?””
Caleb smiled.
“Meaning the baby could inherit what your grandfather spent decades protecting.””
Ashley stared at me.
I understood.
The thirty-thousand-dollar monthly distribution.
The trust.
The amendment.
The questions about inheritance.
The secret pregnancy.
It wasn't just about me.
It was about the child.
My child.
I turned toward Ashley.
“Did you know?””
She shook her head.
“I swear I didn't.””
“You knew there was money.””
“Yes.””
“You knew about the trust.””
“Yes.””
“But you didn't know about the succession clause?””
“No.””
Caleb interrupted.
“She didn't know.””
I looked at him.
“Why are you helping me?””
He laughed.
“I'm not.””
Then he reached into his coat.
My mother suddenly shouted,
“Ethan, get down!””
A gunshot exploded through the ballroom.
The chandelier above us shattered.
Glass rained down.
People screamed.
I ducked.
Mom pulled me to the floor.
Ashley disappeared behind a table.
Security rushed forward.
Another shot cracked through the air.
Then the emergency lights went out again.
Total darkness.
I heard Ashley scream.
“Ethan!””
I pushed myself upright.
“Ashley!””
No answer.
I reached through the darkness.
My hand found empty floor.
Then I heard a door slam.
I ran toward it.
My mother shouted behind me.
“Don't go!””
But I was already through the door.
The corridor beyond was dark.
I heard footsteps racing away.
Then Ashley's voice.
“Ethan!””
I ran faster.
At the end of the hallway, a service exit stood open.
Rain blew through the doorway.
And beside it, on the wet floor, was Ashley's phone.
The screen was lit.
One new message.
May you like
From Ryan.
*They took her. Do not trust your mother.*
