Chapter 9: The Last File
“Abigail!””
I lunged toward Nicholas.
Jonathan caught my arm.
“Mom, no!””
Nicholas raised his gun.
“Stay where you are.””
Patricia calmly descended the last step.
She looked at the servers with something close to admiration.
“Fifteen years.””
She smiled.
“Do you know how long we've been waiting?””
I glared at her.
“You won't live long enough to enjoy it.””
She laughed.
“There she is.””
“The colonel.””
Daniel moved beside me.
“Patricia, you have no idea what you're holding.””
“Oh, I know exactly what I'm holding.””
She pointed at the server.
“Everything.””
Jonathan stepped toward the console.
Patricia raised her weapon.
“Don't.””
He stopped.
Nicholas looked at his brother's drive.
“Give it to me.””
Jonathan stared at him.
“You married my sister.””
Nicholas shrugged.
“I did what I was told.””
“You hurt her.””
“She was collateral.””
My stomach turned.
I looked at him.
“You beat my daughter.””
Nicholas's expression remained blank.
“She refused to cooperate.””
Patricia sighed.
“Enough sentiment.””
She looked at me.
“Give me the drive.””
I held it up.
“You want this?””
“Yes.””
“Then come take it.””
Nicholas aimed at me.
Patricia stopped him.
“No.””
She stepped forward.
“Rachel understands consequences.””
I smiled.
“You've mistaken me for someone who still cares about yours.””
Patricia's face tightened.
“You care about Abigail.””
“Yes.””
“Then you'll cooperate.””
She pressed a button on her phone.
The video returned.
Abigail was still in the hospital.
But now there was another person in the room.
A nurse.
The nurse who had first directed me to Abigail.
She was holding a syringe.
I felt ice spread through my veins.
“Touch my daughter,” I said, “and I'll bury every person connected to you.””
Patricia laughed.
“You still don't understand.””
She pointed at the server.
“Your daughter isn't our leverage.””
“Then what is?””
Patricia looked at Jonathan.
“He is.””
Jonathan froze.
Patricia continued.
“Your son has been hiding the final key.””
I looked at him.
“Jonathan?””
He said nothing.
“What key?””
Jonathan's eyes filled with tears.
“I didn't want you involved.””
“Tell me.””
He shook his head.
“Mom, please.””
“Tell me.””
He looked at the server.
“The archive has one final file.””
“What's in it?””
“Proof.””
“Of what?””
“That Silver Harbor wasn't an operation.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“It was a test.””
I turned toward him.
“What?””
Daniel's voice was quiet.
“They were testing whether military intelligence could be manipulated from inside.””
Patricia smiled.
“And it worked.””
She looked at me.
“They created false reports. Redirected assets. Erased people. Manufactured enemies.””
I stared at the files.
“Why?””
“Control.””
She gestured toward the names on the screen.
“Money is only the beginning.””
Jonathan whispered, “The final file identifies everyone involved.””
Patricia's smile faded.
“Which is why it cannot leave this building.””
I looked at the server.
Then at the drive.
Then at my son.
I finally understood.
“This whole time, you weren't trying to destroy the archive.””
Patricia's eyes narrowed.
“You wanted me to find it.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because the system would only recognize the person who originally opened it.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“Me.””
Patricia nodded.
“You were the final key.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Rachel, don't.””
Patricia raised her gun.
“Open the file.””
I walked toward the terminal.
Jonathan whispered, “Mom, there has to be another way.””
“There is.””
I looked at him.
“Trust me.””
I placed my hand against the scanner.
The terminal flashed.
*IDENTITY CONFIRMED.*
A folder opened.
One file.
Only one.
*SILVER HARBOR — ORIGINAL RECORD.*
I clicked it.
A video began playing.
The screen showed a younger version of me.
Fifteen years ago.
Sitting in a dark room.
My face was bruised.
My uniform was torn.
And beside me was General Avery.
The younger me looked directly into the camera.
“If you're watching this, then they failed to erase the archive.””
Patricia stepped closer.
Daniel stopped breathing.
The recording continued.
“They will tell you I betrayed my unit.””
I watched myself speak.
“They will tell you Daniel Mercer died.””
Daniel looked at the screen.
“They will tell you my son was transferred for his protection.””
Jonathan stared.
“None of that is true.””
The younger me leaned closer to the camera.
“Jonathan was never a protected child.””
I felt my knees weaken.
“He was the witness.””
Jonathan whispered, “What?””
The recording continued.
“He saw what happened.””
My eyes filled with tears.
“No,” I whispered.
The younger Rachel looked terrified.
“The night Silver Harbor ended, Jonathan was there.””
I turned toward my son.
“You were a child.””
He nodded slowly.
“I remember.””
Patricia looked at him.
“You remember?””
Jonathan's face hardened.
“Everything.””
The recording continued.
“I erased my son's identity because he witnessed the execution of the people who tried to expose the network.””
I covered my mouth.
The younger Rachel said:
“I couldn't protect him by keeping him with me.””
She looked directly into the camera.
“So I made them believe I had abandoned him.””
Jonathan began crying.
“I thought you didn't want me.””
The recording continued.
“I loved him enough to let him hate me.””
I turned toward Jonathan.
He looked shattered.
Patricia suddenly shouted.
“Turn it off!””
Nicholas stepped forward.
But Daniel raised his weapon.
“Don't.””
The recording continued.
“There is one person who knows the entire truth.””
The younger me looked toward someone off-camera.
Then the camera shifted.
A man stepped into view.
My breath caught.
It was Daniel.
But he looked younger.
And he was holding a baby.
Jonathan.
The younger Daniel looked into the camera.
“We never lost the child.””
Patricia stared at the screen.
“No.””
Daniel beside me whispered:
“I was the one who took him.””
The room went silent.
I turned slowly toward him.
“You?””
He nodded.
“I promised I'd keep him alive.””
I stared at the man who had haunted my memories for fifteen years.
“You were never dead.””
“No.””
“You were protecting my son.””
“Yes.””
“And Avery knew?””
Daniel nodded.
“Avery helped us disappear.””
I looked at Patricia.
Her face had gone pale.
She suddenly turned toward the stairs.
“Call him.””
Nicholas frowned.
“Who?””
Patricia whispered:
“The real commander.””
Daniel looked at me.
Then he said:
“It's too late.””
A sound came from above.
Sirens.
Dozens of them.
Red and blue lights flashed through the warehouse windows.
Patricia stared upward.
“What did you do?””
I smiled.
“The archive was never being copied.””
She looked at the terminal.
“What?””
I held up my phone.
“The moment I opened the final file, it transmitted itself.””
Daniel's eyes widened.
“To whom?””
I looked at Patricia.
“Every federal agency with the clearance to receive it.””
Her face collapsed.
Nicholas lowered his weapon.
Then footsteps thundered down the stairs.
A team of armed federal agents flooded the room.
Patricia dropped her gun.
Nicholas followed.
Daniel raised his hands.
Jonathan stood beside me.
For the first time in fifteen years, my family was together.
Then an agent approached me.
“Colonel Gardner?””
“Yes.””
He handed me a sealed envelope.
“This was delivered to us with the archive.””
I opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
My daughter Abigail.
And beside her...
a man I had never seen before.
On the back, someone had written:
*YOU CAUGHT THE FERGUSONS.*

Below that:
*BUT YOU STILL DON'T KNOW WHO ORDERED SILVER HARBOR.*
