Chapter 9: The Woman Daniel Tried to Protect

The photograph shook in my hand.

I stared at the face.

A face I had not seen in four years.

A face that belonged to someone I thought had disappeared from our lives forever.

Walter’s mother.

Emily.

My son Daniel’s first wife.

The woman who left before Walter turned five.

The woman who broke Daniel’s heart.

The woman everyone said had abandoned her family.

My mind struggled to understand what I was seeing.

“Why is she with Daniel?””

The detective sat back down.

“That’s what we’re trying to determine.””

I looked at Michael.

He looked just as shocked as I felt.

“You didn’t know?””

He shook his head slowly.

“No.””

I looked back at the photograph.

Daniel was standing beside Emily outside a building.

They weren’t arguing.

They weren’t fighting.

They looked serious.

Like two people discussing something important.

“Everyone told me she left,” I whispered.

The detective nodded.

“That was the story.””

“The story?””

He placed another document on the table.

“Mrs. Bennett, Emily did leave your son’s home four years ago. But what happened afterward is more complicated.””

My fingers tightened around the photograph.

“Complicated how?””

The detective looked at Walter.

“Is he aware of who Emily is?””

I looked at my grandson.

Walter’s face had gone pale.

“Yes.””

The detective paused.

“Then maybe he deserves to know the truth too.””

Walter looked at me.

“Granny?””

I reached for his hand.

“It’s okay.””

But I wasn’t sure if it was.

Because every truth I had learned since waking up seemed to hurt more than the last.

The detective continued.

“After Emily left, Daniel believed she had abandoned him and Walter.””

“That’s what we all believed.””

“Yes.””

“But?””

The detective opened the folder.

“But Daniel later discovered she had been trying to contact him.””

I froze.

“What?””

Michael looked up sharply.

“When?””

“Several times.””

“Why didn’t he tell me?””

The detective was quiet.

Then he answered:

“Because he was afraid.””

“Of Emily?””

“No.””

A pause.

“Of Lisa and Mark.””

The room went silent again.

I felt like I was falling through my own memories.

Everything I knew was changing.

Every person I trusted had become a question.

“What did Lisa and Mark have to do with Emily?””

The detective looked at the papers.

“Emily claimed she left because she was being pressured.””

“Pressured?””

“Yes.””

“By who?””

The detective didn’t answer immediately.

He didn’t need to.

I already knew.

“Lisa.””

He nodded.

“According to Emily, your daughter convinced her that leaving would protect Walter.””

My stomach tightened.

“Protect him from what?””

The detective looked at Walter.

“From losing everything.””

I didn’t understand.

“Explain.””

He folded his hands.

“Emily discovered that Mark had been moving money from Daniel’s business accounts.””

Michael’s expression changed.

“Wait.””

The detective nodded.

“Daniel’s company had financial problems. Emily noticed unusual transactions.””

My mind raced.

Daniel had always been careful with money.

He wasn’t rich.

But he worked hard.

He built his business from nothing.

“He confronted Mark,” the detective continued.

“And?””

“That confrontation changed everything.””

Walter suddenly spoke.

“Dad was angry before he died.””

Everyone looked at him.

I softened my voice.

“What do you mean, sweetheart?””

He looked down.

“He told me grown-ups sometimes hide bad things because they think kids can’t understand.””

My heart broke.

Daniel had been trying to protect him too.

The detective nodded.

“Daniel started investigating.””

Michael looked at the floor.

“That’s why he called me.””

“Yes,” the detective said.

“He knew something was wrong.””

I looked at the photograph again.

“Then why was Emily in the picture?””

The detective turned another page.

“Because she came back to help him.””

The room went quiet.

“She came back?””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

The detective looked at me.

“Why?””

“Because Lisa told me Emily didn’t care about Walter.””

A heavy silence followed.

The detective’s expression changed.

“Mrs. Bennett, did you ever speak to Emily after she left?””

I opened my mouth.

Then stopped.

No.

I hadn’t.

Not once.

Because Lisa had always been the one explaining.

“She said Emily didn’t want contact.””

The detective nodded.

“Did you ever verify that?””

The question hurt.

Because I knew the answer.

“No.””

For years, I had accepted someone else’s version of events.

I had never asked the woman herself.

The detective placed another piece of paper in front of me.

“This was found inside Daniel’s hidden box.””

It was a letter.

Not from Daniel.

From Emily.

I looked at the handwriting.

My hands started shaking.

“Can I read it?””

The detective nodded.

I unfolded the paper.

Daniel,

I don’t know if you’ll believe me, but I need you to know the truth.

I never left because I stopped loving you or Walter.

My vision blurred.

Lisa came to me before I left. She told me things about your family. She told me your mother would never forgive me if she knew what happened.

I stopped reading.

My eyes moved to the woman sitting outside the door in my memory.

My daughter.

The person who had always been between me and everyone else.

I continued.

She said if I stayed, Walter would be taken away from me. She showed me documents and made me believe Daniel was angry with me.

A tear fell onto the page.

I was scared. I was young. I made the worst mistake of my life.

I swallowed.

But when I learned the truth, it was too late.

The next line made my heart stop.

Daniel had already discovered what Lisa and Mark were doing.

I looked at Michael.

He nodded slowly.

I continued.

He told me he was going to tell your mother everything.

My hands trembled.

I begged him to be careful.

The final lines were written differently.

Like they had been added later.

If something happens to Daniel, please believe me.

He was trying to protect you.

And I was trying to find my way back to my son.

I lowered the letter.

Walter was crying quietly.

“Is that my mom?””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

He wiped his face.

“Did she really leave me?””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because the answer was no longer simple.

“I think she made a mistake.””

Walter looked down.

“Does she love me?””

The question broke me.

I pulled him closer.

“Yes.””

I didn’t know if I had the right to answer.

But I believed it.

Because no matter how many mistakes adults make, sometimes love survives underneath them.

The detective stood.

“We located Emily.””

My head lifted.

“You did?””

He nodded.

“She has been cooperating with the investigation.””

“Where is she?””

Before he could answer, someone knocked on the door.

Everyone turned.

The door opened slowly.

A woman stood there.

Older than I remembered.

Her face full of regret.

Her eyes immediately found Walter.

And she started crying.

“Walter.””

My grandson froze.

The woman covered her mouth.

“I’m sorry.””

Walter didn’t move.

For a moment, nobody knew what would happen.

Then Emily whispered:

“I have wanted to say that for four years.””

Walter looked at me.

Then back at her.

“Why didn’t you come back?””

The question was quiet.

But it carried years of pain.

Emily broke down.

“Because I thought coming back would put you in more danger.””

Walter’s face changed.

“Danger from who?””

Emily looked toward the hallway.

Toward the place where Lisa had disappeared.

Then she looked at me.

“From the people who wanted Daniel silent.””

My blood ran cold.

“Emily…”

She stepped inside.

“I need to tell you something.””

The room became still.

“Something Daniel discovered the night before he died.””

“What?””

Emily looked at me.

And the sadness in her eyes frightened me more than anger ever could.

“Daniel didn’t just find out about the money.””

A pause.

“He found out Lisa and Mark had been planning this for years.””

My breath caught.

“How many years?””

Emily swallowed.

“Since before Walter was born.””

The room went silent.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Your daughter didn’t just want your house, Evelyn.””

She looked at me.

“She wanted Daniel’s inheritance.””

I frowned.

“What inheritance?””

Emily’s face turned pale.

“The one Daniel never told you about.””

Michael stepped forward.

“What inheritance?””

Emily looked at him.

“Daniel discovered his father left him something before he died.””

My heart stopped.

My husband.

Daniel’s father.

A secret I never knew.

“What was it?””

Emily looked at the detective.

Then at me.

“A trust fund.””

The room went silent.

“And Lisa found out.””

My fingers tightened around Walter’s hand.

Because suddenly, the question wasn’t only why Lisa wanted my house.

It was why she had spent years hiding a secret from her own family.

Emily whispered:

“And Daniel’s final message wasn’t about money.””

I looked at her.

“Then what was it about?””

She took a shaky breath.

“He discovered who helped Lisa and Mark.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

Emily looked toward the door.

May you like

And her answer made everyone freeze.

“Someone inside this hospital.””
