Chapter 6: The Man Behind The Disappearance

The knock came again.

Slow.

Calm.

Almost polite.

That was what terrified me.

A person who comes to your door with innocent intentions doesn’t announce themselves like they already own the moment.

Everyone in the room froze.

Lily was standing behind me now, clutching the back of my shirt.

I could feel her fingers shaking.

I turned toward her.

“Go upstairs.””

She shook her head immediately.

“No.””

“Lily.””

“No, Dad.””

Her voice was small.

But firm.

“I don’t want to be away from you.””

The words cut deeper than anything else that day.

I crouched down.

“You’re safe.””

She looked at me.

“Are you?””

I didn’t have an answer.

And she saw that.

Before I could respond, Daniel moved toward the door.

“Don’t open it.””

I grabbed his arm.

“Who is he?””

Daniel looked at me.

His expression was different now.

Not cautious.

Not worried.

Afraid.

“His name is Victor Hale.””

Marlene stepped back.

“Why is he here?””

Everyone turned toward her.

I stared.

“You know him?””

She didn’t answer.

“Why do you know him?””

Her eyes moved toward the door.

Then back to me.

“I made a mistake.””

I almost laughed.

“A mistake?””

She swallowed.

“You think everything that happened today was planned?””

I stared at her.

“What else am I supposed to think?””

The knock came again.

This time harder.

Victor’s voice followed.

“Mark, I’m not here to cause trouble.””

Daniel whispered:

“That’s what he always says.””

I looked at him.

“Who is he?””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Someone who cleans up problems.””

A chill ran through me.

“What does that mean?””

“It means when people become inconvenient, Victor makes them disappear.””

Marlene suddenly turned on him.

“Stop.””

Daniel looked at her.

“No.””

His voice was cold.

“Not anymore.””

Victor knocked again.

“I know you’re inside.””

My heart pounded.

How did he know?

How did he know so quickly?

I moved toward the side window and looked outside.

The SUV was still there.

No one else.

Just him.

Standing calmly on my porch.

Like this was a normal visit.

Like my family wasn’t falling apart behind the door.

I stepped back.

“Call the police.””

Daniel nodded.

“I already did.””

Marlene looked at me.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

I turned.

“Explain.””

Her face tightened.

“Victor doesn’t work for me.””

Nobody spoke.

Then I said:

“But you know him.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

She looked away.

“Because my husband hired him.””

The room went silent.

I blinked.

“Your husband?””

“My first husband.””

I felt a strange wave of confusion.

Emily had never talked about him.

Not once.

“Emily’s father?””

Marlene nodded.

“Richard.””

Rachel’s face changed.

“You mean Richard Whitaker?””

I looked at her.

“You know him too?””

Rachel’s expression turned pale.

“He was the reason I lost Lily.””

The room seemed to tilt.

I looked between them.

“Someone needs to start explaining.””

Marlene sat down slowly.

For the first time, she looked old.

Not powerful.

Not controlling.

Just tired.

“Richard was obsessed with appearances.””

Daniel crossed his arms.

“That’s an understatement.””

Marlene ignored him.

“He believed people existed to serve his image.””

“And Lily?””

Marlene looked toward the floor.

“When Emily became pregnant with Lily…”

I stopped her.

“Wait.””

I looked at Rachel.

“She said Emily was her best friend.””

“She was.””

Marlene closed her eyes.

“Emily was trying to help Rachel. But Richard found out.””

Rachel’s voice shook.

“He said my baby would ruin Emily’s future.””

Marlene nodded.

“He convinced me that taking control was the only way.””

I stared.

“You took a baby away from her.””

Marlene looked at me.

“I thought I was protecting Emily.””

“No.””

My voice became quiet.

“You were protecting yourself.””

She didn’t argue.

That scared me.

“I let Richard handle it,” she whispered.

Rachel wiped her eyes.

“He paid someone to create false documents.””

My chest tightened.

“Paid who?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Daniel.

He finally spoke.

“Victor.””

A silence followed.

Then Victor’s voice came from outside.

“Mark.””

Everyone froze.

His voice was closer.

He was standing right outside the door.

“You’re making this more difficult than it needs to be.””

Daniel motioned for everyone to move away.

I grabbed Lily’s hand.

“Back.””

We moved toward the kitchen.

Marlene stayed still.

I looked at her.

“What are you doing?””

She didn’t answer.

Then she stood.

Slowly.

And walked toward the door.

“What are you doing?”” I repeated.

She looked at me.

Something unreadable crossed her face.

“Ending this.””

Before I could stop her, she unlocked the door.

“Marlene!””

The door opened.

Victor stood outside.

He was probably in his late fifties.

Clean haircut.

Expensive coat.

The kind of man who looked completely ordinary.

That was what made him frightening.

He smiled.

“Marlene.””

She stepped onto the porch.

“Why are you here?””

Victor glanced past her.

At me.

At Daniel.

At Rachel.

His smile disappeared.

“I see.””

His eyes landed on Rachel.

“So she came.””

Rachel moved behind me.

Victor noticed.

Interesting.

He didn’t look surprised.

He looked annoyed.

“You have caused a lot of problems.””

Rachel’s voice shook.

“You destroyed my life.””

Victor sighed.

“People always say that when they don’t understand consequences.””

I stepped forward.

“You need to leave.””

Victor looked at me.

“Mark Anderson.””

The way he said my name bothered me.

Like he had studied it.

Like he knew more about me than I knew about him.

“You have no idea what you’re involved in.””

“I know my daughter was hurt.””

His eyes moved to Lily.

Something changed.

Not guilt.

Recognition.

That made my skin crawl.

“You’re Lily.””

My daughter stepped closer to me.

Victor smiled slightly.

“I remember when you were born.””

My entire body went cold.

“You were there?””

He didn’t answer.

Marlene whispered:

“Victor.””

He looked at her.

“You should have handled this years ago.””

My head snapped toward Marlene.

“What does that mean?””

Victor ignored me.

“Where is Emily?””

Nobody answered.

His expression changed.

“She contacted him, didn’t she?””

I felt my stomach drop.

“How do you know?””

Victor looked directly at me.

“Because I know your wife.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You threatened her.””

Victor looked at him.

“You still haven’t learned when to stay quiet.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“You almost killed her.””

The words hit the air.

Lily gasped.

I looked at Victor.

“What?””

Victor didn’t react.

That scared me.

“You’re accusing me of something serious.””

“You altered her medical records.””

Victor smiled.

“Careful.””

“Why?””

“Because accusations without proof are just noise.””

Daniel looked toward the folder.

“We have proof.””

Victor’s eyes moved to the folder.

Then to me.

Then back to Daniel.

For the first time, he looked concerned.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

“Where is Emily?”” I asked.

Victor looked at me.

And then he said something I would never forget.

“She’s not missing.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“She left.””

“No.””

“She left because she found out the truth.””

I stepped forward.

“What truth?””

Victor looked at Marlene.

Then back at me.

“The truth your wife spent nine years hiding.””

I felt anger rise.

“You’re all obsessed with secrets.””

Victor smiled faintly.

“Because secrets are what keep families together.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Secrets destroy them.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Victor reached into his coat.

Everyone tensed.

But he didn’t pull out a weapon.

He pulled out a phone.

He pressed a button.

A video started playing.

Emily’s face appeared on the screen.

My heart nearly stopped.

She looked exhausted.

Scared.

But alive.

The video was recorded somewhere unfamiliar.

A dark room.

Emily looked directly into the camera.

“Mark…”

Her voice broke.

“If you’re seeing this, it means they found out.””

I stepped closer.

“Emily.””

Victor held the phone away.

The video continued.

“I need you to understand something.””

Emily looked down.

Then back at the camera.

“I lied to you.””

My breathing stopped.

“I lied because I thought I was protecting Lily.””

The screen flickered.

Then Emily said:

“But the truth is…”

The video suddenly froze.

Victor lowered the phone.

“What happened?”” I demanded.

He looked at the screen.

Then smiled.

“The file was damaged.””

“No.””

I grabbed toward the phone.

Victor stepped back.

“But there was enough.””

My voice shook.

“Enough for what?””

He looked at Lily.

Then at me.

“Enough for you to know that Emily wasn’t afraid of losing her daughter.””

A pause.

“She was afraid of losing you.””

The police sirens sounded in the distance.

Victor glanced toward the street.

Then calmly walked backward.

Before leaving, he looked at Marlene.

“You had one job.””

Marlene’s face went pale.

Victor turned to me.

And said:

“Ask your wife who Lily’s father really is.””

Then he disappeared into the night.

Leaving behind one terrifying question.

A question that changed everything.

Because when I looked down at the frozen video screen, I saw something in the background.

A hospital room.

A machine.

And a name tag on the bed.

Emily wasn’t somewhere unknown.

She was still in a hospital.

But not the one we knew.

And written on the screen beneath her name was:

*Patient transferred under emergency order. Authorized by Mark Anderson.*

My blood went cold.

May you like

I had never signed that order.

But someone had used my name.
