Chapter 6: The Housekeeper's Real Name
Pearl didn't move.
She simply stared.
Her lips parted.
No sound came out.
Mrs. Ellis stepped into the garage.
She looked older than the girl in the photograph.
Of course she did.
Twenty years had passed.
But the eyes were the same.
Chestnut brown.
Wide.
Terrified.
Pearl covered her mouth.
"My baby.""
The woman nodded.
"Mom.""
Pearl stumbled forward.
Then stopped.
As if she was afraid that touching her daughter would make her disappear again.
"I thought you were dead.""
"I know.""
"I looked for you.""
"I know.""
"Where did they take you?""
Mrs. Ellis looked at Victor.
"Everywhere.""
Victor's expression remained calm.
"Your daughter was raised to understand the value of obedience.""
Pearl turned toward him.
"What did you do to her?""
Victor shrugged.
"Nothing she didn't need.""
Jack stepped forward.
"You're done.""
Victor smiled.
"Am I?""
He looked at me.
"Ask your wife what she promised me.""
Jack turned to Pearl.
"What is he talking about?""
Pearl shook her head.
"Nothing.""
Victor laughed.
"You've always been terrible at lying to people you love.""
Pearl's face hardened.
"I don't love you.""
"I didn't say you did.""
Victor looked at me.
"Your father owed me.""
I frowned.
"What did he owe you?""
"Everything.""
He stepped closer.
"Your father built his empire with my money.""
Daniel interrupted.
"That's not true.""
Victor looked at him.
"You were there.""
Daniel's face tightened.
"Yes.""
"You saw the contracts.""
"I saw fraud.""
"You saw opportunity.""
Daniel shook his head.
"I was young.""
Victor smiled.
"And frightened.""
Daniel looked away.
I turned to him.
"What did you do?""
Daniel didn't answer.
"Daniel.""
He swallowed.
"I helped your father move the money.""
My stomach dropped.
Jack stared at him.
"You worked for him.""
"Yes.""
"How long?""
"Three years.""
"Why?""
Daniel looked at me.
"Because your father threatened my family.""
Victor laughed.
"You see? Everyone has a reason.""
I stared at the people surrounding me.
My husband.
My stepmother.
The housekeeper who was really Pearl's daughter.
The attorney who had helped my father.
And Victor.
The man who had apparently been waiting twenty years for this moment.
I suddenly understood why the house had always felt wrong.
It wasn't a home.
It was a trap built on old secrets.
Victor pointed at me.
"Your father created the trust to protect his daughter.""
I said nothing.
"But he made one mistake.""
"What?""
"He didn't understand how much power a child could have.""
Jack moved closer to me.
Victor continued.
"The trust becomes untouchable when Pamela gives birth.""
Daniel nodded.
"And until then?""
"Until then, the guardian controls it.""
I looked at Pearl.
"And that's why you were named.""
Pearl nodded.
"Yes.""
"Did my father expect you to protect me?""
"He expected me to control you.""
I stared at her.
She wiped her tears.
"At first, I wanted the money.""
Jack's expression hardened.
Pearl looked down.
"I won't lie to you anymore.""
"Then tell me the truth.""
"I moved in because I knew the trust existed.""
"And the chain?""
Pearl's voice broke.
"I thought if I frightened you enough, you'd sign the documents.""
Jack stepped forward.
"What documents?""
Pearl looked at him.
"The guardianship papers.""
My heart stopped.
"You wanted me to sign away my child?""
"No.""
She shook her head.
"I wanted you to sign away the trust.""
"What's the difference?""
"The difference is that I was supposed to protect your baby.""
Victor laughed.
"She was never going to protect anything.""
Pearl turned on him.
"You took my daughter.""
"I saved her.""
"You stole her.""
"Your daughter was safer with me than she ever would have been with you.""
Mrs. Ellis stepped forward.
"My name is Clara.""
Pearl looked at her.
Clara's voice shook.
"Not Ellis.""
She looked at me.
"Clara Nash.""
Pearl began crying.
"I didn't know.""
Clara looked at her.
"You were supposed to find me.""
"I spent twenty years looking.""
"You stopped.""
"I never stopped.""
"You stopped when you came here.""
Pearl couldn't answer.
Clara turned toward me.
"She came because she believed the trust could buy my freedom.""
I looked at Pearl.
"Is that true?""
Pearl nodded.
"Victor told me if I became Pamela's guardian, he'd let Clara go.""
Clara shook her head.
"He lied.""
Victor sighed.
"I never lied.""
"You kept me hidden.""
"I kept you safe.""
"From my mother?""
"From everyone.""
Jack looked at Victor.
"Why?""
Victor's eyes moved to me.
"Because your father left something else.""
Daniel suddenly stiffened.
"What?""
Victor smiled.
"The original ledger.""
Daniel went pale.
I felt my heart pound.
"What ledger?""
Victor said, "The ledger containing every illegal payment your father ever made.""
Daniel whispered, "That's impossible.""
"Is it?""
Victor reached into his coat again.
This time he pulled out a small black key.
"The ledger was hidden in this house.""
Jack looked at the house.
"Where?""
Victor's gaze settled on me.
"Your father told you.""
"I was a child.""
"He didn't tell you in words.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
Victor smiled.
"He gave you a memory.""
I shook my head.
"I don't remember.""
"Of course you don't.""
He stepped closer.
"Pearl made sure of that.""
I turned toward her.
"What did you do?""
Pearl's eyes filled with terror.
"Pamela...""
"What did you do to my memory?""
She shook her head.
"I never touched your mind.""
Victor interrupted.
"Not directly.""
Clara suddenly gasped.
"Mom.""
Pearl turned.
Clara pointed toward the house.
"Remember the nursery.""
Pearl froze.
"What nursery?""
"The room you locked.""
Pearl's face went white.
Clara whispered,
"The room where you hid me before Victor took me.""
I stared at Pearl.
"You had a nursery?""
She nodded slowly.
"It was your mother's.""
I felt something inside me shift.
A memory.
A tiny wooden horse.
Blue curtains.
My mother's perfume.
A music box.
And my father kneeling beside the floorboards.
He had pressed one finger against the wood.
Then whispered something to me.
I closed my eyes.
"I remember.""
Jack grabbed my shoulders.
"What?""
I opened my eyes.
"The nursery.""
Victor smiled.
"Then you know where the ledger is.""
I looked toward the house.
"The floor.""
Daniel shook his head.
"No.""
Victor's smile widened.
"Not the floor.""
I remembered my father's hand.
The little wooden horse.
The music box.
And one sentence he had whispered into my hair.
When the song stops, look beneath the crown.
My breath caught.
"The music box.""
Pearl suddenly whispered,
"Don't open it.""
I turned.
"Why?""
She stared at me.
"Because your father didn't hide the ledger inside.""
She looked at Clara.
Then at Victor.
"He hid something else.""
"What?""
Pearl's face crumpled.
"The recording of your mother's murder.""
Victor's smile vanished.
May you like
Jack looked at me.
And from inside the house, somewhere upstairs, the old music box began to play.
