Chapter 8: My Husband's Final Offer
Ethan stepped into the room as though he had every right to be there.
Richard followed him, closing the door behind them.
For a moment, the four of us stared at one another.
Peter sat rigidly in his bed, one hand gripping the blanket. I stood beside him, the brass key hidden in my closed fist. Ethan's expression was almost tender, as if he had arrived to collect his wife after a minor disagreement.
Richard looked less composed.
His eyes moved from Peter to me, then to the key I was trying to conceal.
"Claire," Ethan said, "thank goodness. I've been worried sick.""
I took a step back.
"How did you find us?""
He gave a weary smile.
"You left your phone connected to the family location-sharing service.""
I stared at him.
"You tracked me?""
"I was worried about you.""
"You followed me to a medical facility where my uncle is being kept under a false identity?""
Ethan's smile disappeared.
"Your uncle is a very sick man. He shouldn't be dragged into a corporate dispute.""
Peter laughed bitterly.
"Now you care about my health?""
Richard moved toward the bed.
"Peter, this has gone far enough. You need to give us the records.""
Peter's face hardened.
"You told me I'd never see Claire again if I didn't cooperate.""
Richard glanced at me.
"I was trying to protect the family.""
"Which family?"" Peter demanded.
"Yours or hers?""
Ethan stepped between them.
"Let's calm down. Nobody wants to hurt anyone.""
I stared at my husband.
"You forged my signature.""
His jaw tightened.
"We've discussed this.""
"No, we haven't. You've lied, avoided my questions, and tried to take my documents. Now you've tracked me to a medical facility.""
He lowered his voice.
"Claire, please. We can still fix this.""
"How?""
He looked at Richard.
His father opened the briefcase and placed it on the small table beside the bed.
Inside were several neatly organized documents.
"I've brought a settlement agreement," Richard said.
"It resolves the outstanding obligations involving Mercer Global, protects the Caldwell business, and ensures that Claire's interests are properly represented.""
I didn't touch the papers.
"Why would I sign anything you bring me?""
"Because the alternative could be devastating.""
He removed a second document.
"This is a proposed trust administration agreement. It would allow Ethan to manage the assets on your behalf while the ownership questions are resolved.""
I almost laughed.
"Manage them for whose benefit?""
"For yours," Ethan said quickly.
"You don't understand how complicated this is. There are tax obligations, corporate filings, investment structures. You could lose everything if you make the wrong decision.""
"I'd rather lose money than sign another document I don't understand.""
Ethan's expression hardened.
"You think Daniel will protect you forever?""
The room went quiet.
He stepped closer.
"He's a CEO, Claire. He has a company to run. You're a personal complication, an old girlfriend who suddenly appeared in the middle of a corporate investigation. The moment this becomes inconvenient, he'll walk away.""
I looked at him.
"Is that what you think love is? Staying until someone becomes inconvenient?""
His eyes flickered.
For a moment, I saw the man I had fallen in love with—the man who used to bring me coffee when I worked late, who remembered my favorite books, who had held me through the night after my mother died.
I wanted to believe that man still existed.
But then he reached for the papers.
"Sign the agreement," he said.
"We can have a quiet conversation at home, and tomorrow we'll work everything out.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
He stared at me.
"What did you say?""
"I said no.""
Richard slammed his hand against the table.
"Do you understand what's at stake? Caldwell Holdings employs hundreds of people. Families depend on that company. If Mercer withdraws its support, the entire business could collapse.""
I looked at him.
"Then perhaps you should have run it honestly.""
His face darkened.
"You have no idea what it takes to keep a company alive.""
"No. I don't. But I know what it takes to keep a promise, and apparently neither of you understands that.""
Peter coughed violently.
I turned toward him immediately.
"Are you all right?""
He nodded weakly.
"Just tired.""
Ethan watched the exchange, then pulled a chair beside the bed.
"Uncle Peter, I know things have been difficult. But you have an opportunity to put this behind you. Give us the records, and we'll arrange whatever care you need.""
Peter stared at him.
"You're offering to pay for my silence?""
"I'm offering to make sure you're comfortable.""
"With money you stole from someone else?""
Ethan's face flushed.
"That's enough.""
Peter leaned forward.
"You think I don't know what you've done? You came to me six months ago with documents bearing Claire's signature. You told me she had agreed to transfer control of the trust.""
I looked at Ethan.
He went still.
Peter continued, "I told you she would never sign something like that without understanding it. You said she had already agreed in principle.""
Ethan's voice dropped.
"You're confused.""
"No. I'm old. There's a difference.""
Richard grabbed the edge of the briefcase.
"We're leaving.""
But Ethan didn't move.
He was staring at Peter with an expression I had never seen before—raw hatred stripped of every polite layer.
"You should have stayed hidden," he whispered.
Peter flinched.
I stepped between them.
"Don't you dare threaten him.""
Ethan looked at me.
For the first time, his mask fell completely.
"You have no idea what I've done to keep this family afloat.""
"Then tell me.""
He laughed harshly.
"Tell you? You wouldn't understand.""
"Try me.""
He looked toward his father, who shook his head almost imperceptibly.
But Ethan had already lost control.
"Your mother's trust could have saved everything," he said.
"The company was drowning. My father had made commitments he couldn't meet. Mercer was preparing to withdraw its support, and the bank was demanding repayment.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"So you decided to use my identity.""
"I decided to solve a problem.""
"By forging my signature?""
"By arranging a temporary transfer that would have been reversed once the financing came through.""
"Without asking me?""
"You would have refused!""
The admission exploded through the room.
I stared at him.
Ethan seemed to realize what he had said. He lowered his voice.
"Claire, I was going to explain everything after the wedding. Once the marriage was official, we'd have access to the financial structures necessary to stabilize the trust.""
I felt cold all over.
"You married me to get access to my inheritance.""
"I married you because I love you.""
"Then why did you need my money?""
"Because I was trying to protect our future!""
He stepped closer, his voice rising.
"Do you know what it's like to have everyone expect you to succeed? My father built a business and nearly destroyed it. I spent years trying to repair his mistakes.
Every investor wanted results. Every employee wanted security. And every day, I had to pretend I wasn't terrified of losing everything.""
For a moment, I saw his desperation.
It was real.
So was the pressure he had lived under.
But none of it explained why he had chosen to make me the price of his survival.
"You could have told me," I whispered.
"And you would have walked away.""
I stared at him.
He had answered the question himself.
He had known that I might refuse.
So he had removed my ability to choose.
That was the truth beneath every lie.
Richard closed the briefcase with a sharp snap.
"Ethan, stop talking.""
But Ethan ignored him.
He reached into his pocket and removed a folded sheet of paper.
"This is the final offer," he said.
"Sign the administration agreement, and I'll arrange for the bank to release the money. I'll also make sure the disputed guarantee is withdrawn.""
I stared at him.
"You can withdraw a forged guarantee?""
His silence answered me.
I looked at Daniel's documents on the table.
Then I looked at the brass key in my hand.
"No.""
Ethan's face hardened.
"Claire, this is your last chance.""
"No.""
He took another step.
"You have no idea what happens if I lose this company.""
"That's not my responsibility.""
"My father could lose everything.""
"Then he should have thought about that before using my identity.""
Ethan's eyes flashed.
"And what about you? You think Daniel is going to marry you? You think he's been waiting all these years for you to come crawling back?""
I felt the sting of his words, but I refused to let him see it.
"This isn't about Daniel.""
"Of course it is. You've always wanted someone to rescue you.""
The accusation might have hurt once.
Now it sounded pathetic.
I took off my wedding ring, which I had placed in my handbag earlier, and set it on top of his settlement agreement.
"I don't want you to rescue me, Ethan.""
I looked him in the eyes.
"I want you to stop trying to own me.""
For a moment, he seemed genuinely stunned.
Then he turned toward Peter.
"Give me the key.""
Peter shook his head.
Ethan lunged.
I moved instinctively, placing myself between them.
His hand closed around my wrist.
"Get out of the way!""
I screamed.
"Let go of me!""
The door flew open.
Two security officers entered, followed by Dr. Shaw and a man in a dark suit I recognized from Daniel's company.
The man stepped between Ethan and me.
"Mr. Caldwell, release her immediately.""
Ethan let go.
Richard backed toward the door, his face pale.
"This is a private family matter.""
The security officer looked at him.
"Then you can discuss it outside. You're not authorized to be in this room.""
Ethan adjusted his cuffs, trying to recover his composure.
"Fine. We'll leave.""
He turned toward me.
But before he reached the door, I spoke.
"Ethan.""
He stopped.
I picked up the settlement agreement.
Then I tore it in half.
His face went white.
I tore it again.
And again.
The pieces fluttered onto the carpet between us.
"You don't get to decide my future anymore," I said.
Ethan stared at the paper fragments.
Then he leaned close enough that only I could hear him.
"If you give Daniel those records, you'll destroy more than my family.""
I held his gaze.
"Who else?""
His expression changed.
For a fraction of a second, I saw fear.
Then he whispered, "Ask Daniel who really funded Mercer Global.""
He walked out before I could respond.
Richard followed him.
The door closed.
I stood trembling, the torn agreement scattered at my feet.
Peter reached for my hand.
"I'm sorry," he whispered.
I shook my head.
"You don't owe me an apology for telling the truth.""
I looked toward the doorway.
Ethan had left behind more questions than answers.
And his final warning had opened a possibility I hadn't considered.
What if the story Daniel had told me about my mother's investment was only part of the truth?
What if someone else had funded the company?
And what if that person had a reason to keep the original records hidden?
A few minutes later, Daniel arrived.
He listened as I explained what had happened, his expression growing darker with every sentence.
When I repeated Ethan's final warning, Daniel went completely still.
"Who really funded Mercer Global?"" I asked.
He looked toward the window.
Then he sat down slowly.
"Your mother provided the initial capital," he said.
"But she wasn't the only investor.""
"Who was the other one?""
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
"An investment group called Northstar Capital.""
I frowned.
"Why does that matter?""
"Because Northstar's controlling shareholder disappeared shortly before your mother died.""
May you like
He opened his eyes.
"And the person who replaced him was Richard Caldwell.""
