Chapter 9: The Record Daniel Tried To Destroy
For a moment, I couldn’t understand what Victor had said.
The words were simple.
Clear.
But my mind refused to accept them.
*Daniel paid to erase Noah’s original birth records.*
I looked at Daniel.
He didn’t argue.
He didn’t shout.
He didn’t tell me Victor was lying.
And that silence was the loudest confession I had ever heard.
“Emma…”
I stepped away from him.
“No.””
My voice shook.
“No, don’t say my name like everything is still normal.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“I can explain.””
I laughed softly.
A painful sound.
“You have been explaining for eight years.””
Rachel stood frozen near the window.
Victor remained calm.
Too calm.
Like he had been waiting for this exact moment.
“Give her the rest,” Victor said.
Daniel looked at him.
“Stop.””
“You should have stopped years ago.””
“Dad.””
“No.””
Victor’s voice became colder.
“You wanted control. You wanted everyone to believe your version of the story. Now she gets the truth.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What truth?””
He looked down.
And for the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.
Shame.
Not fear.
Not anger.
Shame.
“The night Noah was born…”
He stopped.
I waited.
“Rachel and I had already been separated.””
Rachel looked at him.
“You told me we were trying to fix things.””
Daniel didn’t look at her.
“I know.””
Her eyes filled with anger.
“You lied to me too.””
“Yes.””
The honesty didn’t make it better.
It made it worse.
Daniel continued.
“Before the twins were born, I found out about the genetic tests.””
“The ones showing Lily carried the mutation?”” I asked.
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“And Noah didn’t.””
“Yes.””
I looked at Victor.
“Then why hide Noah’s records?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Because there was another result.””
The room became silent.
“What result?””
Daniel looked at me.
“The paternity test.””
My stomach tightened.
“The one showing Noah wasn’t my biological son.””
I already knew.
But hearing him say it made it real.
Rachel covered her mouth.
“I don’t understand.””
Daniel looked at her.
“The doctors tested the twins because of the genetic concerns.””
“And?””
He looked at me.
“Lily was mine.””
A pause.
“Noah wasn’t.””
The room felt smaller.
I held onto the folder.
“But Victor said Noah’s biological father was my father.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
I stared at him.
“My father was dead.””
“He wasn’t.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Daniel looked toward Victor.
“Your mother knew.””
I felt sick.
“No.””
“She knew your father was alive.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“She also knew he had been searching for you.””
The room spun.
I thought about my childhood.
My mother never talked about my father.
Not once.
Whenever I asked, she changed the subject.
She always said:
“He was gone.””
But gone didn’t mean dead.
Not anymore.
“What happened to him?””
Nobody answered.
Then Victor spoke.
“He died two months after Noah was born.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
Victor’s face hardened.
“Because he discovered what Daniel had done.””
I looked at Daniel.
“You knew him?””
Daniel nodded.
“He came to the hospital.””
“When?””
“The night after Noah was born.””
I felt a chill.
“He knew?””
“He knew Noah was his son.””
My knees weakened.
“And you still kept him away?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I thought I was protecting everyone.””
I shook my head.
“You keep saying that.””
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
Daniel looked at me.
“The truth.””
I almost cried from anger.
“The truth that your wife had a child with another man?””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“The truth that your father was connected to something bigger.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Victor answered.
“Your father discovered that Daniel’s family had been hiding illegal medical experiments.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
Rachel looked at Victor.
“What are you talking about?””
Victor’s expression remained controlled.
“The genetic testing done on the twins was not only for medical reasons.””
I stared at him.
“Then why?””
“Because someone wanted to study inherited conditions.””
“Someone?””
Victor looked at Daniel.
“Someone who paid doctors to keep quiet.””
I looked at Daniel.
“You knew.””
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“You knew.””
Daniel looked broken.
“Yes.””
The anger inside me became almost impossible to contain.
“You let me believe Noah’s birth was a miracle.””
“It was.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You turned it into a crime scene.””
Daniel flinched.
For once, my words reached him.
Rachel stepped forward.
“What about Lily?””
Victor looked at her.
“She was the reason everything became dangerous.””
“Why?””
“Because Lily carried the mutation they wanted to study.””
Rachel’s face went pale.
“You mean they wanted her?””
Victor nodded.
“They wanted both children.””
My breath caught.
“Noah too?””
“Yes.””
I looked at the folder.
The twins.
Separated.
Hidden.
Protected.
Or controlled.
I didn’t know anymore.
Then I remembered something.
The photograph.
The little girl standing beside Noah.
“She wasn’t supposed to be found.””
Victor looked at me.
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because the photograph showed they were together.””
“And?””
“That proved Daniel lied.””
I looked at Daniel.
He looked away.
I understood then.
The photograph wasn’t just a memory.
It was evidence.
Evidence that Lily existed.
Evidence that the twins had been together.
Evidence that someone had separated them deliberately.
My phone buzzed.
I looked down.
A message from Lily.
*I found the original birth file.*
My heart raced.
Another message arrived.
*Emma, you need to see this before Daniel does.*
I opened the attachment.
It was a scanned hospital document.
At the top:
*Original Birth Registration — October 14, 2018*
Two names.
Twin One.
Twin Two.
Then a handwritten correction.
My hands trembled.
“What is it?”” Rachel asked.
I couldn’t speak.
Because I was reading something that changed everything.
The original birth registration listed:
*Mother: Rachel Williams*
*Father: Unknown*
Then beneath it, someone had crossed out the father’s name.
And written another.
Not Daniel.
Not my father.
Someone else.
I zoomed in.
My breath caught.
“Who is it?”” Daniel asked.
I looked up.
Everyone was staring at me.
The name was written clearly.
A name I recognized.
A name that explained why Daniel had spent eight years hiding the twins.
Because Lily and Noah weren’t just connected to one family.
They were connected to two.
The name on the birth record belonged to the person who had funded the entire cover-up.
The person who had ordered the adoption.
The person who had erased the hospital records.
I whispered:
“Margaret wasn’t protecting Daniel.””
Everyone looked at me.
“She was protecting this person.””
Victor stepped closer.
“Who?””
I turned the screen toward them.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone knew the name.
Everyone except me.
The name written on the original birth certificate was:
*Victor Carter.*
The room went silent.
I looked at Daniel.
Then at Victor.
“My father-in-law was the biological father of Lily?””
Victor didn’t answer.
And that was the first time I saw him afraid.
Not guilty.
Not angry.
Afraid.
Then Lily called.
I answered.
Her voice was shaking.
“Emma…”
“Yes?””
“I found another page.””
“What page?””
A pause.
“The one they removed from the original file.””
My heart raced.
“What does it say?””
Her voice dropped.
“Emma…”
“What?””
“It says Noah and Lily were never supposed to be separated.””
I closed my eyes.
“I know.””
“No.””
Her voice trembled.
“You don’t understand.””
“What?””
“The page explains why.””
I waited.
Then Lily whispered:
“The twins weren’t separated to protect Noah from Lily.””
A pause.
“They were separated because Noah was the only one who could expose what happened.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What happened?””
Lily answered:
“Emma…”
Her voice broke.
“The test results showed Noah inherited something from your father.””
My hands went cold.
“What?””
“Something Daniel and Victor spent years hiding.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“What did Noah inherit?””
Silence.
May you like
Then Lily said:
“The evidence that your father was murdered.””
