Chapter 6: The Secret My Mother Took To Her Grave

I stared at the photograph on my phone until the screen dimmed.

Then I tapped it again.

And again.

As if my eyes were refusing to accept what they were seeing.

Daniel.

Outside the hospital room.

The night Noah and Lily were born.

And standing beside him…

My mother.

Evelyn Carter.

The same woman whose jewelry box had started this nightmare.

The same woman whose photograph had uncovered everything.

The same woman who had taken this secret to her grave.

“No,” I whispered.

Rachel looked over my shoulder.

Her face changed.

“Who is that?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because I knew.

I knew exactly who it was.

“My mother.””

The room went silent.

Margaret looked at me.

“Your mother was there?””

I nodded slowly.

“I don’t understand.””

Neither did I.

My mother had never mentioned meeting Daniel before my wedding.

She had never mentioned being at the hospital.

She had never mentioned another baby.

She had never mentioned Lily.

But the photograph proved she knew.

Rachel looked at the phone.

“When did Lily send this?””

“Just now.””

“Call her back.””

I tried.

The call went straight to voicemail.

Again.

And again.

Nothing.

My hands shook.

“She knows something.””

Margaret walked closer.

“Maybe she knows everything.””

I looked at the old nurse.

“What do you mean?””

Margaret stared at the photograph.

“Your mother was not supposed to be there that night.””

“Why?””

“Because she wasn’t listed as family.””

The words made my stomach twist.

“Then why was she there?””

Nobody answered.

Because the only person who could explain was gone.

My mother.

The woman who had raised me.

The woman who had told me honesty mattered more than anything.

The woman who had left behind a hidden photograph instead of an explanation.

I drove home alone.

I needed space.

Not because I wanted to be alone.

Because I didn’t know who I could trust anymore.

Every person I had loved seemed to have a missing chapter.

Daniel had hidden a daughter.

Rachel had lost one.

Margaret had protected a secret.

And now my own mother had been standing in the middle of it all.

When I entered my house, everything looked normal.

Noah’s shoes were by the door.

His backpack was on the couch.

A half-finished drawing was sitting on the coffee table.

A normal life.

My normal life.

Except now I knew it had been built on things people chose not to tell me.

I walked upstairs to my mother’s old room.

After her death, I had barely touched anything.

The room still smelled like her perfume.

Lavender.

Soft.

Familiar.

I opened the closet.

Nothing.

I opened drawers.

Old clothes.

Old letters.

Nothing.

Then I remembered something.

The jewelry box.

The photograph had been hidden.

Not accidentally.

Someone had placed it there.

Someone wanted me to find it.

I searched the bottom of the box.

Under the velvet lining.

Behind the small compartment.

There was another piece of paper.

My heart raced.

I unfolded it carefully.

It was a handwritten note.

My mother’s handwriting.

The first line nearly made me drop it.

*Emma, if you are reading this, it means the truth finally found you.*

I sat down.

My hands trembled.

I continued reading.

*I wanted to tell you. More than once. But every time I tried, I remembered the promise I made.*

A promise.

To whom?

I kept reading.

*Daniel begged me to stay quiet. He said he was protecting you. He said the truth would destroy your family.*

I stopped.

Daniel had involved my mother.

He had convinced her too.

*But I knew something was wrong. I knew what he did to Lily was wrong.*

My eyes filled with tears.

My mother knew.

She knew Lily existed.

She knew Daniel lied.

And she did nothing.

*The night Noah was born, I saw Daniel leaving the hospital nursery. He was carrying paperwork. He looked terrified.*

I swallowed.

*I followed him because I was worried. That was when I saw the second baby.*

The second baby.

Lily.

*Daniel told me Lily had a serious medical issue and that adoption was the only option. I believed him at first.*

Another pause.

Then:

*Until I saw the report.*

My breath caught.

The report.

The same report Margaret had shown us.

*The report said something different. It said Noah and Lily needed to stay together. It said separating them could cause harm.*

I looked down.

*Daniel did not want Lily gone because she was sick. He wanted her gone because she knew the truth.*

My heart pounded.

What truth?

I turned the page.

But there was only one sentence left.

*Emma, I am sorry I protected the wrong person.*

Then beneath it:

*If Daniel ever finds out you know, do not let him take Noah.*

I froze.

A sound came from downstairs.

A door opening.

I stood quickly.

“Hello?””

No answer.

My hand moved toward my phone.

Then I heard a voice.

“Emma.””

Daniel.

I walked downstairs.

He was standing in the living room.

He looked exhausted.

Different.

Like the person who had controlled everything for eight years was finally losing control.

“You read it.””

It wasn’t a question.

I held the note.

“You knew.””

Daniel looked down.

“Emma.””

“You knew my mother found out.””

“Yes.””

“And you asked her to lie.””

He didn’t deny it.

That hurt more.

“How long?””

He rubbed his face.

“Since the day Noah was born.””

I laughed quietly.

A broken sound.

“Eight years.””

“Emma.””

“Eight years you let me believe everything was normal.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

I stepped closer.

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You were protecting yourself.””

Daniel looked at me.

And for once, he didn’t argue.

The silence said enough.

I held up my phone.

“Lily contacted me.””

His face changed instantly.

Fear.

Pure fear.

“What did she say?””

“You’re afraid of her.””

“No.””

“You are.””

Daniel looked away.

“Where is she?””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

That was his first question.

Not how she was.

Not if she was okay.

Where is she?

“You still think you can control this.””

“Emma, listen to me.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“You don’t get to tell me what to do anymore.””

His expression softened.

“Please.””

The word surprised me.

Daniel never begged.

“I need you to understand something.””

“What?””

He looked at the note in my hand.

“Your mother didn’t know the whole story.””

“What story?””

He hesitated.

Then whispered:

“The reason Lily was separated from Noah wasn’t because of the test results.””

I stared at him.

“Then why?””

Daniel looked toward the stairs.

Toward Noah’s room.

And suddenly, I hated that he was afraid.

Because fear had always been his excuse.

“I found out something about Noah before you did.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“Something about who his biological father was.””

I felt the room spin.

“You know who Noah’s father is?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then tell me.””

Daniel looked at me.

“I can’t.””

I stepped forward.

“Why?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because if I tell you…”

A pause.

“Everything you know about Noah’s birth will change.””

My phone buzzed.

We both looked down.

A new message.

From Lily.

One sentence.

*Emma, ask Daniel why your mother paid for my adoption.*

I looked up slowly.

Daniel saw the message.

And his face turned completely white.

Because he knew.

He knew exactly what Lily had just revealed.

May you like

And this time…

There was no explanation left.
